Market orientation in the non-profit sector: a resource dependence perspective

    Get PDF
In the context of an increasingly competitive environment in which organisations are compelled to manage their resources and capabilities in more efficient and effective ways, the concept of market orientation has been acknowledged as highly important in the marketing and management literature. The existing literature, however, has mainly been focused on the for-profit sector and, to our best knowledge, little research has been undertaken in other organisational contexts, such as the non-profit sector. Given the specificity of NPOs and the increasingly demanding resource environments in which these organisations operate, thepresent study examines the extent to which resource dependence impacts the market orientation construct. The findings suggest that resource dependence has proven to provide important insights for gaining a better understanding of market orientation although this concept needs to be reassessed in the specific context of non-profit organisations. The paper concludes with a series of implications for theory and practice.NPOs, Market Orientation, Resource Dependence Theory

The impact of non-financial resources on the perceived dependency of non-profit organisations in relation to the state: the Portuguese case

In the context of an extensive sharing of responsibility between governmental and non-profit organisations to accomplish social policy actions, the relationship between state and the nonprofit organisations and the degree of dependence of these organisations in relation to the state has been acknowledged as a critical issue within social and public policy. However, the hallmark of much research related with non-profit/statutory relations has derived mainly from the widely recognition of non-profit s increased income from statutory sources (Salamon and Anheier, 1996). As a result, non-profit s dependency on the state has been captured essentially by assessing financial dependency. Assuming that nonprofit organisations are also dependent on the state for non-financial resources (Saidel, 1991; 6,1994), this paper attempts to analyse the extent to which the non-profit sector is dependent on the state for resources, as well as evaluating the weight that non-financial resources might have in the perceived resource dependency assumed by non-profit organisation s managers in relation to the state.

During the last century, film and video have become important inspiring documents of collective memory;Õĺ in this century, they have become an increasingly important source of evidence and historical reflection. This paper aims to analyse the documentary series I Am Africa. Consisting of ten episodes, I Am Africa gives voice to ten citizens two from each of the Portuguese-speaking African countries: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and Sao Tome and Principe with significant civic involvement in the development of the nations where they were born and currently live. Through thematic analysis of the ten stories, which make up the documentary series, were located the predominant themes in the narratives of those involved. The results of this research show the narrative organization of the ten interviewees in three central themes: the meanings of independence, which involve the representations of the people who have participated in the process of (de)colonization;Õĺ the perceptions about the cultural and linguistic diversity in their countries;Õĺ and, finally, the discourses associated with the (re)making of national identities.(undefined

The social networks that are established in the digital environment allow the analysis of how the position the actors detain within a network affects their access to various resources, including to information. The access to these resources helps individuals to participate in cyberspace, as active citizens, able to create and produce meanings in this context. In this paper, is discussed some of the research developed in a broader project which had as main objective the analysis of how 'Lusophone' identity is (re)constructed in cyberspace and in everyday interpersonal communication. Using Ucinet and Netdraw software, are presented the networks established within the Brazilian, Mozambican and Portuguese blogospheres, based on a mapping that analyses the monitoring carried out over a period of three months, in 348 Weblogs of the Lusophone cyberspace. We examine the virtual networks of sociability among the authors of Weblogs of this mapping, with particular attention to the real context in which they move, and to the conditions of network access in the three countries under study

During the last century film and video have become important inspiring documents of collective memory, becoming in this century an increasingly relevant source of evidence and historical reflection. The autobiographical memories based on film or video may be a tool for the (re)making of our interpretations of historical events, thus contributing to the fight against the injustices of our past memories. In order to deconstruct these interpretations, we decided to examine the documen-tary series entitled I am Africa. Consisting of ten episodes, I am Africa gives voice to ten citizens ‚Äď two by each of the Portuguese Speaking African Countries (PALOP): Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe ‚Äď with significant civic involvement in the development of the nations were they were born and currently live. Disserta√ß√£o de mestrado integrado em Industrial Engineering and ManagementThe fast growth of the technology market has triggered the highest levels of competitiveness and globalization in the current business environment. The present VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world and the continuous pursuit for new products and services has increased customer's demands, requiring the companies to be more flexible than ever by delivering software with quality, in time and within budget while in search of excellence and success. To reach this purpose, many software organizations have been adopting Agile Methodologies combined with Continuous Improvement projects, in order to achieve an improvement in customer satisfaction, providing products with higher quality, lower costs and in shorter time to the market. The ENG-P department at Bosch Braga, had a track record of some practices of Scrum but it was recognized that most teams were inefficient in taking advantage of the improvement opportunities that arose during the Sprint Retrospective ceremonies and transform them into improvements for the team. The objective of this dissertation project was to design a process for the inception of Continuous Improvement (CI) in one team of the ENG-P department, that could define the actions that needed to be taken after the Retrospective ceremony, in order to make the most out of the suggestions given by the team. By combining the Scrum cycle and the Lean philosophy, this CI process helped the team analyze problems or improvement opportunities and proceed to their prioritization, planning, implementation and evaluation, making the team more effective in problem-solving, more motivated and, consequently, more productive. The first step was to define which CI strategy would be implemented. Between analytical and benchmark approaches, the PDCA was the one selected to serve as foundation for the CI process due to its application to improve processes, products or services in any organization. After the implementation and standardization of the CI process in the daily work of the team, the final results showed that this new method doubled the suggestions implementation rate when compared with the previous results obtained by only performing the Retrospective ceremony. In addition, the accumulation of small improvements throughout time were responsible for substantial changes in the team. The level of motivation, involvement, empowerment and teamwork increased, there was a better visual task and time management, the communication improved, and a mindset of continuous improvement was built within the team.O r√°pido crescimento do mercado tecnol√≥gico despoletou os mais altos n√≠veis de competitividade e globaliza√ß√£o no atual ambiente de neg√≥cios.

The paper aims to present the work developed within the doctoral program in Cultural Studies with the project entitled "Migrations and identities in the Portuguese documentary film: film literacy in the promotion of intercultural dialogue". This project proposes to study the discourses and the representations associated with migrant populations spread by the documentary film produced in Portugal. Were developed a brief reflection on the concept of social representations and how they are (re)constructed, in order to understand the role of the media in the dissemination of representations about immigrants. It is argued that literacy should be fostered, giving it an active role in the schools, to allow the deconstruction of certain social stereotypes, promoting the intercultural dialogue.Funda√ß√£o para a Ci√™ncia e a Tecnologia (FCT
