Fostering Resident Voice and Influence: The Making Connections Experience with Resident Engagement and Leadership

    Get PDF
Resident engagement is often noted as a key element in neighborhood transformation and community change efforts, yet very little literature exists that explains and captures how resident engagement actually happens and what it takes to achieve lasting resident engagement capacity and success. As one step toward expanding the information available, this report presents insights gained by the Annie E. Casey Foundation after more than a decade of working with residents to achieve better results during the Making Connections initiative, Casey's signature community change effort of the 2000s. The report describes the various activities in which residents were engaged during Making Connections, the sequence and timing of those activities and some of the impact and community improvements that were achieved as a result. Through a focus on the Making Connections experience, the report highlights effective resident engagement strategies and assesses the factors that can inhibit or enhance their effectiveness

Tuba solo discography: a comprehensive guide to solo literature recordings released on compact disc

    Get PDF
This monograph provides a comprehensive discography of solo tuba works publicly released on compact disc. It is intended to aid tuba students, teachers, professionals, amateurs, and other enthusiasts in their search for recordings of solo literature. The project encompasses recordings released between 1982 (the year compact discs were invented) and the present. While previous attempts to catalogue tuba recordings have been made by other authors, those documents have certain limitations which this project corrects. Included in this discography are 317 total recordings, 145 of which were not included in any previous attempt. Of these 145, at least sixty-three were released prior to the most recent attempt published in 1996. In addition, this project includes detailed information concerning record labels, album numbers, release year, distributors, published reviews, accompanimental forces, and assisting musicians and/or ensembles. Within the body of the monograph, each album is listed alphabetically by the artist’s last name. If more than one recording was released by the same artist, the title of the album serves as a secondary data point. Within the back matter of this project, the appendices reorganize individual works by composer’s last name and by title of the work. Further appendices include contact information for review organizations, record labels, and distributors. In this work, “tuba” refers to the modern bass or contrabass tuba in the traditional keys of BBb, CC, Eb, or F. Categories of “tuba solo works” include the following: works for tuba alone, works for tuba and keyboard (piano, harpsichord, synthesizer, etc.), works for tuba and large ensemble (band, orchestra, etc.), works for tuba and chamber ensemble, and works for tuba with electronic or pre-recorded accompaniment. For limitations and exclusions, please reference the introduction. I project that this discography will be published online at http://www.iteaonline.org. The format for online publication will be a searchable database. The database will be available to members of the International Tuba and Euphonium Association. The result of this research is a comprehensive, sustainable document which contains all currently known tuba compact disc recordings. I hope that this work will serve as an important example for discographers of other instruments

eSPAN140 performance assessment: V-65 Jesup South Bridge (Buchanan County, Iowa)

    Get PDF
The Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance (SSSBA) is a group of bridge and culvert industry leaders (including steel manufacturers, fabricators, service centers, coaters, researchers, and representatives of related associations and government organizations) who have joined together to provide educational information on the design and construction of short span steel bridges in installations up to 140 feet in length. Arguably, one of the crowning achievements of SSSBA is the development and implementation of a series of short-span steel bridge design standards. eSPAN140 is a complimentary web-based design tool which provides customized steel solutions for bridges up to 140 feet.;Working with members of SSSBA, the Secondary Roads Department of Buchanan County, Iowa, headed by Brian Keierlieber, P.E., agreed to be the first owner agency to utilize eSPAN140 to design and construct a short span steel bridge, specifically the new V-65 Jesup South Bridge in Jesup, Iowa. Various members of SSSBA volunteered time, materials, and expertise to assist in delivering the first documented short-span bridge designed using eSPAN140. In addition, the demonstration served significant research objectives: data collected from field investigations during deck casting as well as during live load testing will serve as analytical benchmarks for future analytical studies in short-span steel bridge behavior.;The scope of this thesis is to discuss the development of eSPAN140 and its associated design standards along with how eSPAN140 was utilized during its first documented application, the V-65 Jesup South Bridge. In addition, a comprehensive overview of the experimental and analytical testing program is provided, along with a presentation of testing results. As discussed, it is clear that eSPAN140 is quite capable of producing efficient and economical solutions in the short-span range. This efficiency and economy stems largely from the use of commonly available plate and member sizes and the standardization of designs. For this project, eSPAN140 provided all the necessary parameters for county engineers to refine and synthesize an effective short-span steel bridge design

Mildred Brown Gallion was born in Charleston, WV, in the early 1900s. During the 1930s and 1940s, Mrs. Gallion served as a nurse for the African-American schools in Kanawha County. Much of her work with children at this time occurred outside of the schools. She investigated and reported overlooked medical issues of school-aged children throughout rural Kanawha County. Mrs. Gallion advocated for equal medical treatment, equipment, and facilities for African-Americans. In the audio clip provided, Mrs. Gallion explains how she vocalized her dissent of inadequate medical equipment to serve all of the children of Kanawha County. Mrs. Gallion continued to serve the Kanawha County African-American community as a public health nurse for St. Francis and Charleston General Hospital.https://mds.marshall.edu/oral_history/1002/thumbnail.jp
