    Wearable sensor networks: A measurement study

    Abstract Wearable technology is no longer science fiction. Thanks to the growing capability in the production chain to miniaturize complex electronics, a wide variety of gadgets that can be worn or included in dresses and accessories have emerged. These smart gadgets can collect data about the physical condition of the user and/or the environment providing the basis for innovative and valuable services. The main goal of this paper is to assess this context through field experiments undertaken in a testbed comprised of sensing hardware deployed on open source boards such as Arduino. Moreover, coupled with the sensing tier, we propose a proof-of-concept deployment architecture enabling a wide range of wearable sensors to collect and transmit data to a logically centralized unit

    I licheni rappresentano un eccellente modello per lo studio della distribuzione degli elementi in traccia in ambiente urbano, tuttavia sono disponibili informazioni limitate sui meccanismi molecolari che si verificano nei talli in seguito ai processi di bioaccumulo. Questo lavoro ha avuto come obiettivo lo studio della concentrazione degli elementi in traccia e dei cambiamenti nei parametri fisiologici e nel proteoma in talli di Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach. esposti per 7 giorni nell’area urbana e peri-urbana di Siena. Le stazioni campionate sono state sei fisse e una mobile (autobus), oltre a una stazione di controllo. Gli elementi in traccia considerati sono stati suddivisi in tre classi, ovvero elementi maggiormente legati al traffico veicolare, elementi la cui sorgente prevalente è il traffico veicolare e elementi la cui origine è fondamentalmente litogenica. I risultati hanno mostrato l’influenza dell’intensità del traffico veicolare sull’accumulo degli elementi in traccia e un effetto dell’accumulo degli elementi in traccia sul contenuto dei pigmenti fotosintetici nei talli esposti, mentre non sono stati rilevati danni alle membrane cellulari. Dall’analisi proteomica dei campioni esposti è emerso come il quantitativo di proteine strutturali (A-actina e Tubulina), funzionali (RuBisCo) e di stress (HSP70, CP450 e TGasi) vari in maniera non lineare con la concentrazione degli elementi in traccia nei talli. Questo lavoro ha dimostrato come l’approccio proteomico rappresenti una valida integrazione allo studio dei parametri ecofisiologici degli organismi esposti in studi di biomonitoraggio ambientale

    Safety First? Users\u2019 Perception of Wearable Sensor Networks for Aging

    Population aging is considered to be one of the most significant social transformations of the twenty-first century. In this paper, we evaluate the acceptability and usability of a system designed to silently monitor the activity and condition of older adults, with a particular focus on the elderly affected by cognitive decline. The system is composed of sensors that can be hidden in various wearable objects to collect data about a user and his/her surrounding environment and transmit them to a server for further elaboration. The aim is to improve safety and independence of older adults. We conducted a survey involving elderly people, their relatives and health practitioners to better assess their needs and provide them with a technology that is as little intrusive and visible as possible. The results of our survey are promising as the majority of the respondents expressed their willingness to use the proposed technology in their everyday lives

    Are Remote Play Streaming Systems Doomed to Fail? A Network Perspective

    Digital games represent one of the most compelling fields in computer science, embodying a wide variety of technical challenges. Thanks to the evolution of streaming and broadband technology, new service provisioning schemes have emerged. Remote play streaming services represent an interesting case study deserving a thorough investigation. To this end, we present a network measurement study that can be useful to create traffic models and help researchers identify issues, guiding architecture and protocol design. Moving beyond latency and jitter issues, our purpose is to understand whether remote play streaming services can operate through regular connectivity or, on the contrary, are doomed to fail as happened to some pioneer providers. We have hence deployed a testbed to test the impact of network limitations and, different from previous studies, we particularly emphasize the role of the available bandwidth in this context

    Dyslexia is one of the main cognitive disabilities affecting the reading acquisition. As it may interfere with educational opportunities even in presence of adequate intelligence, it is of crucial importance to obtain early diagnosis and help affected children as soon as possible. Generally, dyslexia is diagnosed not earlier than primary school as difficulties in reading is used as first indicator. Yet, being able to detect and treat this problem even in preschool years would ensure better chances to limit its impact and help the child's future reading ability. To this aim, we discuss here a series of serious games we designed and tested to train specific skills that have been proven to be effective against dyslexia

    Is the World Wide Web for everyone? Long story short: no and unfortunately it is not only a matter of infrastructures, level of instruction or economic conditions. People affected by visual impairments have often difficulties in navigating web pages for a wide range of reasons. One of the biggest obstacles nowadays is the use of CAPTCHAs, powerful tools against bot attacks but also potential virtual barriers for the aforementioned category of users. In this paper we tested various categories of CAPTCHAs with people affected by visual impairment and not, to understand how discriminatory can be these cybersecurity measures

    A Chrome extension to help people with dyslexia

    Even if the World Wide Web is one of the main content and service providers, unfortunately, these contents and services are not really available for everyone. People affected by impairments often have difficulties in navigating Web pages for a wide range of reasons. In this paper, we focus on people affected by dyslexia. These users experience difficulties in reading acquisition, despite normal intelligence and adequate access to conventional instruction. For this reason, we have created Help me read!, a Chrome extension that allows to change many features of a Web page. Furthermore, it allows to isolate and enlarge one word at a time. This feature is crucial as it allows people with dyslexia to focus on each single word, thus overcoming one of their main difficulties
