From 1999 to 2008 she was professor for computer science at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Switzerland.     Design and Evaluation of an Instructional Solar Energy Technologies Lab

    This paper presents a design for a solar energy lab that allows students to plan, install and evaluate different system architectures and gain relevant practical experiences. The addressed learning outcomes are analyzed based on the 13 learning outcomes defined by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as well as based on the taxonomy levels of the cognitive domain after Bloom. In this paper we present a sample lab assignment and map its tasks to the learning outcomes and cognitive domains. First results of qualitative student feedback are equally presented

    Gesellschaftliche Aspekte des Internets: Informationsressourcen fĂĽr den Unterricht

    Der Einzug des Internets in den Unterricht hat nicht nur technische und (Schul-)fachliche Aspekte. Zunehmend gewinnen auch gesellschaftlich relevante Themen wie Privatheit, Datenschutz, der Umgang mit rechtswidrigen Inhalten (z.B. "Holocaust-Lüge"), Anonymität und Verantwortung an Bedeutung. Diesen Themenstellungen werden Jugendliche immer wieder begegnen, wenn sie sich im Internet bewegen, sei es im privaten oder schulischen und später auch im beruflichen Umfeld. Daher ist es notwendig, dass diese Fragestellungen im Unterricht angesprochen werden. Zu diesem Themenkomplex gibt es zurzeit allerdings noch wenige Lernmaterialien, auf die man sich im Unterricht abstützen könnte. Dennoch sind Lehrpersonen nicht ganz auf sich alleine gestellt, wenn sie einige der Fragestellungen in den Unterricht einbringen. Im Internet existieren viele Informationen zu diesen Themen, die Lehrpersonen für die Vorbereitung oder bei der Gestaltung des Unterrichts verwenden können. Auch wenden sich einige Angebote direkt an Lehrerinnen und Lehrer. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden einige Beispiele von Internetseiten zu diesen Themen vorgestellt. Die Auswahl der Beispiele erfolgte subjektiv nach Interessenlage der Autoren

    Design and Implementation of Water Desalination System (RO) Using Renewable Energy Source

    The shortage of sufficient available fresh water resources in Jordan to meet water needs forces the nation to look for new water supply sources also to meet the increasing demand for fresh water. In this manuscript, a case study for designing, optimizing and implementing an off-grid water desalination system using photovoltaic (PV) power generation system is introduced. The system is installed on a farm in Southern Ghore of Jordan valley where the access to the grid is not reliable enough to guarantee the desalination of the amount of water for the farm’s irrigation needs. The study offers a framework to aid in designing similar pilot plants where the classic power generation prediction is greatly affected by the environmental conditions. An off-grid PV system with a total nominal power of 10.4 kWp was designed, procured and installed in the southern part of Jordan Valley near Karma town. The system operates the pumping system as well as the reverse osmosis based desalination unit. A measurement system has been collection relevant data like temperature, radiation, voltage, current, water quality, pressure, etc. continuously for the last 4 years. In this paper we will present the sizing procedure used, the system design and evaluate the design using the collected data of the run-time of 4 years. Data about the water quality and amount of desalinated water will equally be used to evaluate the system. The paper will end with recommendations to adapt the system design in different part of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region
