What do we know about consensual non-monogamy

    Get PDF
Recent years have seen considerable interest in consensual non-monogamy from both public and academic perspectives. At least 5% of the North American population is currently in a consensually non-monogamous relationship of some form and there is little difference in measures of relationship quality compared to monogamous relationships. Despite increasing levels of understanding and engagement many practitioners of consensual non-monogamy still experience stigma (and minority stress) which is exacerbated by context (e.g. parenting, healthcare settings), type of consensual non-monogamy (e.g. polyamory vs swinging) and intersects with other identities (e.g. race, sexuality). This review outlines what is currently understood about consensual non-monogamy and argues that relationship diversity has a place alongside gender and sexuality when studying sexual behaviours, romantic relationships, and well-being

2014 Dahlberg Award Winner: The effects of dietary toughness on occlusopalatal variation in savanna baboons

This study investigates the relationship between dietary toughness and craniofacial variation in two groups of savanna baboons. Standard craniofacial and malocclusion data were collected from a captive, soft-diet experiment group (n=24) and a sample of wild-captured baboons, raised on tougher, natural foods (n=19). We tested the hypothesis that in the absence of normal masticatory stress experienced during the consumption of wild foods, the captive baboons would exhibit higher levels of facial and dental structural irregularities. Principal component analysis indicates separation of the two samples. The soft-diet sample exhibits significantly shorter palates, greater variability in palate position, and higher frequencies of occlusal irregularities that correlate with the shorter palates. Results offer further support that long-term dietary chewing stresses have a measurable effect on adult craniofacial variation

Acc #: 756; EXC 012 In this recording, Leroy Bosby is interviewed by Ryan Morini and Michael Campbell in the McCall Library at the University of South Alabama about his experiences in the Excelsior Band. The interview begins with Mr. Bosby describing how his family moved from Marion Junction, Alabama to Mobile. He shares that his grandfather was a healer and herbalist, and his mother worked as a beautician. Mr. Bosby describes growing up on Warren Street, and playing in the band at Dunbar Junior High School. He also reflects on the influence of band directors like Edward Terry Pope and E.B. Coleman on his musical development, and recording artists like Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. Mr. Bosby concludes the interview with reflections on the legacy of Excelsior Band and its significance to the city of Mobile

Validating the Unidimensional Relationship Closeness Scale Through Behavioral Indicators

    Get PDF
The Unidimensional Relationship Closeness Scale (URCS; Dibble, Levine, & Park, 2012) is a new measure of relationship closeness. The purpose of this study is to provide additional construct validation for the measure by determining whether the scale predicts closeness-related behaviors. For example, closeness and physical proximity are positively related. This study tests the proposition that higher scores on the URCS will correspond with shorter distances between two participants. After completing the URCS, participants will engage in a short dyadic conversation with either a friend or a stranger. The distance between the participants’ chairs will be measured. These interactions will be videorecorded, and the videos will be coded for verbal and nonverbal indicators of closeness (e.g., body orientation, eye contact). To the extent that URCS scores predict behavioral indicators of closeness, more confidence can be placed in the measure
