    Portuguese traditional timber structures: survey, analysis and strengthening

    De um modo geral, Portugal, aparte de muitos pa√≠ses europeus, ainda n√£o se encontra totalmente sensibilizado para o uso da madeira como parte integral da constru√ß√£o de edif√≠cios. Num mercado fortemente tradicional no uso de alvenaria e bet√£o, essa tend√™ncia parece estar a mudar, gradualmente, dadas as vantagens inerentes ao uso da madeira. O desenvolvimento tecnol√≥gico da ind√ļstria da madeira propiciou o aparecimento e/ou aperfei√ßoamento de sistemas construtivos, assim como o surgimento de novos produtos derivados de madeira. O incremento das potencialidades de utiliza√ß√£o desta mat√©ria-prima fez com que a industrializa√ß√£o das constru√ß√Ķes das casas de madeira despertasse e consigo novos processos de produ√ß√£o surgissem.     Apresentam-se alguns dos resultados recolhidos nos √ļltimos anos no estudo do tema coberturas tradicionais de madeira. Tendo por base um levantamento exaustivo de v√°rios exemplos, analisou-se o comportamento global das coberturas tradicionais de madeira, estudando a influ√™ncia de par√Ęmetros espec√≠ficos bem como o efeito de alguns erros diagnosticados na fase de levantamento. De seguida, apresenta-se as principais conclus√Ķes de uma campanha experimental realizada com vista ao estudo do comportamento de liga√ß√Ķes tradicionais de madeira, avaliando o efeito do seu refor√ßo com elementos met√°licos. Finalmente, apresentam-se alguns resultados de um ensaio de uma asna de madeira √† escala real realizado em laborat√≥rio

    A utilização sustentável das malhas estruturais de madeira

    As malhas estruturais de madeira s√£o estruturas com caracter√≠sticas muito particulares que lhe conferem a sustentabilidade que hoje em dia se procura na constru√ß√£o. Contudo, a sua utiliza√ß√£o tem que ser analisada considerando essas caracter√≠sticas √≠mpares que lhe podem conferir uma ajustada utiliza√ß√£o, ou n√£o, tendo em conta o contexto em que se insere e o desenho da pr√≥pria malha. Nesse sentido, √© necess√°rio compreender estas malhas como um todo. Desde o seu enorme potencial formal e espacial at√© √†s suas limita√ß√Ķes geom√©tricas, f√≠sicas e construtivas. Apenas com uma base informada se pode, sequer, esbo√ßar a sua adequada utiliza√ß√£o. Neste trabalho, com base num caso de estudo, vai tentar-se perceber a adequa√ß√£o de uma malha estrutural de madeira.     Analysis and strengthening of carpentry joints

    Joints play a major role in the structural behaviour of old timber frames [1]. Current standards mainly focus on modern dowel-type joints and usually provide little guidance (with the exception of German and Swiss NAs) to designers regarding traditional joints. With few exceptions, see e.g. [2], [3], [4], most of the research undertaken today is mainly focused on the reinforcement of dowel-type connections. When considering old carpentry joints, it is neither realistic nor useful to try to describe the behaviour of each and every type of joint. The discussion here is not an extra attempt to classify or compare joint configurations [5], [6], [7]. Despite the existence of some classification rules which define different types of carpentry joints, their applicability becomes difficult. This is due to the differences in the way joints are fashioned depending, on the geographical location and their age. In view of this, it is mandatory to check the relevance of the calculations as a first step. This first step, to, is mandatory. A limited number of carpentry joints, along with some calculation rules and possible strengthening techniques are presented here

    Consolidation of a collar truss with a steel cable system

    Post-tensioning techniques for strengthening existing timber elements have been used throughout history with excellent results. Former applications on wooden trusses have already shown some of the advantages of such a consolidating system, but very few tests were performed on the topic. During an experimental campaign, a full-scale historical timber truss was deeply analysed and tested in its original (unreinforced) condition, reaching a considerable level of damage. It was later repaired with a steel cable system, using prestresses to recover the structure bearing capacity, and tested again. The results show that the repair allowed a recovery of at least the 80% of the ultimate load-carrying capacity. The complete failure was not achieved, but it is likely to be presumed that the structure could have regained the totality of its strength. The data acquired in both tests were later compared in order to understand in detail the behavior of the truss.The present work was made within a Master thesis of the Erasmus Mundus Advanced Masters course in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions.     Lateral resistance of log timber walls subjected to horizontal loads

    The present works intends to represent a further step in the knowledge of timber log-houses through an experimental approach, from which only few information is available. The main part of the experimental work is based on in-plane static tests conducted on timber log walls with distinct transversal stiffness, two vertical compression levels and two values of slenderness. Monotonic and cyclic tests were performed according to EN 12512:2001. The formers were performed to define the elastic slip values and assessment of the failure mechanisms while the lasts allowed evaluating impairment of strength, to measure the ductility and to quantify the energy dissipation.     O presente trabalho pretende contribuir para o conhecimento do sistema construtivo ‚ÄúLog-house‚ÄĚ atrav√©s de uma vasta an√°lise experimental e de an√°lises num√©ricas. A campanha experimental, realizada previamente, teve por objectivo de estudar o comportamento no plano das paredes em troncos de madeira quando sujeitas a ac√ß√Ķes monot√≥nicas e c√≠clicas, de acordo com a EN 12512:2001. Apresenta-se ainda um caso de estudo, relativo a uma moradia produzida e comercializada pela empresa ‚ÄúRusticasa‚ÄĚ, no qual se considera a distribui√ß√£o das for√ßas s√≠smicas em fun√ß√£o: a) da √°rea de influ√™ncia de cada parede e, b) da rigidez de cada parede. As an√°lises efectuadas contemplam algumas verifica√ß√Ķes de resist√™ncia, nomeadamente ao n√≠vel da liga√ß√£o √† funda√ß√£o e no cruzamento entre paredes ortogonais, as quais n√£o s√£o verificadas na totalidade pelo que se apresentam algumas sugest√Ķes a implementar no sistema construtivo com vista √† verifica√ß√£o da seguran√ßa.This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge of the building system "Log-house‚ÄĚ through an extensive experimental analysis and numerical analysis. The experimental campaign, performed previously, aimed of studying the in-plane behavior of log walls when subjected to monotonic and cyclic loads, in accordance with EN 12512:2001. Moreover, a case study concerning a house characteristic of the "Rusticasa" system was analyzed considering the distribution of seismic forces according to: a) the area of influence of each wall, and b) the stiffness of each wall. Analyses carried out include some resistance checks, particularly in terms of the connection to the foundation and at the crossing between orthogonal walls, which are not checked for all walls and, therefore, some suggestions are presented to improve the safety of the structural system.Rusticas

A interven√ß√£o abrange v√°rias estruturas do edif√≠cio, implicando tarefas de total substitui√ß√£o, reconvers√£o de usos e cria√ß√£o de novos espa√ßos. Num edif√≠cio com paredes de alvenaria de pedra, pavimentos e cobertura em madeira, prevaleceu o respeito pela concep√ß√£o existente. A cobertura em madeira maci√ßa foi substitu√≠da e os tradicionais pavimentos reconvertidos em solu√ß√Ķes √† base de madeira lamelada-colada que pontualmente se transformam em sistemas mistos madeira-bet√£o leve. Previously to the full-scale tests of walls, an extensive characterization of the timber logs was made. Due to its importance, the connection between the first timber log and the basement was also evaluated through tests. In a second step of the research, a case study was used to develop a numeric analysis. Using FEM, the in-plane stiffness of timber logs walls was quantified, thus allowing to compare the result of distributing the horizontal loads by the walls according to their area of influence or their in-plane stiffness. Finally, improvements to the log system analyzed were suggested
