    The Human Moment of the Soul

    This article explores the idea of the soul through the framework of two of the most elusive terms in Dante’s Commedia, “umano” and “persona.” It begins with an analysis of the soul’s formation, outlined in Purgatorio 25, by way of the conjunction of corporeal matter and a supernal “spirito novo,” which after death seems to ascend beyond the realm of human existence. This account is then contrasted with the etymological and theological affordances of the concept of personhood, which frames the body as the form—the “mask” of flesh and bones—that continues to individuate the soul after death, immortalizing rather than transcending the human moment of its origin. From the examination of these disparities emerges a new perspective on Dante’s conception of human existence, illustrating its complex but fundamental place within the idea of perfection at the heart of his poetic universe

    Dual-fuel injection fundamentals: experimental – numerical analysis into a constant-volume vessel

    Abstract Dual-fuel combustion mode in compression ignition engines has been tested thoroughly, showing high potential for the reduction of emissions (especially nitric oxides and particulate matter) while keeping unchanged the fuel conversion efficiency compared with conventional Diesel engines. Controlling the reactivity of the secondary fuel is crucial for this kind of application. To this aim, a combined experimental/numerical approach is proposed in this study to provide, on one side, experimental data in controlled conditions for the calibration of the numerical models; on the other side, a numerical framework for the accurate simulation of the dual-fuel injection in engine-like operating conditions. More in detail, a constant-volume combustion vessel has been used to simulate and analyze the injection process varying the characteristic control parameters. Detailed high-resolution images of the injection and combustion processes were acquired for the validation of the numerical framework. Numerical simulations, carried out by means of the CONVERGE CFD code using a Reynolds Average Navier Stokes (RANS) approach allow for understanding the key differences between the nominal and off-design settings. Results have been compared with the experimental data in terms of liquid spray penetration. A comparison with high resolution images has also been done to prove the accuracy of the model to describe the spray evolution in terms of spray characteristics. In the provided picture, this contribution aims at demonstrating the robustness of the experimental/numerical framework that is essential for further development of such engine solution

    Discovery of Juniperus sabina var. balkanensis R. P. Adams and A. N. Tashev in Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Central and Southern Italy and relictual polymorphisms found in nrDNA

    Additional analyses of trnS-trnG and nrDNA from specimens from Bosnia-Herzegovina, southern and central, Italy, Croatia and Macedonia revealed the presence of J. sabina var. balkanensis in these areas west of the previously known populations in Greece, Bulgaria and western Turkey. Careful chromatogram analysis of eight (8) polymorphic sites in nrDNA revealed that nearly all of the populations of both var. balkanensis and var. sabina contained from 2 to 8 polymorphic sites. For these 8 heterozygous sites, two exclusive patterns were found in J. sabina. One type (GGACCCAG) was found in 16/62 plants and type 2 (ACGACAGT) was found in 4/62 plants. The majority of the plants examined (42/62) were heterozygous for 1 to 8 sites. These two nrDNA types appear to have arisen via hybridization with a J. thurifera ancestor. The two types appear in both v. sabina and v. balkanensis populations. Extant putative hybrids appear to have formed by crosses between present day type 1 and type 2 nrDNA
