    The Effect of Education on the NIDA Modified Assist (NMASSIST) Tool on Knowledge and Screening for Substance Use Disorder among Clinicians

    Background: Substance use disorder (SUD) is a disparity affecting nearly 24 million individuals in the U.S., nearly 10% of the total population. Oftentimes, the emergency department (ED) is the only medical care this population receives. There is often a lack of screening for SUD in ED’s, therefore referred care may be limited for these individuals. The National Institute on Drug Abuse Modified Assist (NMASSIST) is an evidence-based tool developed to educate and screen for SUD. This tool can be completed in a timely manner and aid in the recommended referral of care for this select population. Purpose: The purpose of this DNP project was to evaluate clinician knowledge regarding SUD and screening ability in the adult population in an acute ED setting. Methods: A pre/posttest design was utilized to examine changes in clinician knowledge and ability to screen for SUD. An educational module was developed and administered to 15 registered nurses and 12 advanced practice providers/physicians. Clinicians completed a pre/posttest questionnaire prior to and after reviewing the educational module as well as a satisfaction survey. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in clinician knowledge, comfortability, and frequency of screening for SUD (p\u3c0.001) after the implementation of the educational module. Baseline knowledge increased by 87%, comfortability of screening for SUD increased by 100%, and frequency of SUD screening showed an increase of nearly 37%. All clinicians that partook in this project (100%) felt this module was useful, should be recommended to clinicians, and felt the NMASSIST could be utilized in the ED setting. Conclusion: Clinicians demonstrated an increase in knowledge of SUD, increase of screening, and felt more comfortable screening after the implementation of this module

    Information Content in Cortical Spike Trains during Brain State Transitions

    Summary Even in the absence of external stimuli there is ongoing activity in the cerebral cortex as a result of recurrent connectivity. This paper attempts to characterize one aspect of this ongoing activity by examining how the information content carried by specific neurons varies as a function of brain state. We recorded from rats chronically implanted with tetrodes in the primary visual cortex during awake and sleep periods. Electro‐encephalogram and spike trains were recorded during 30‐min periods, and 2-4 neuronal spikes were isolated per tetrode off‐line. All the activity included in the analysis was spontaneous, being recorded from the visual cortex in the absence of visual stimuli. The brain state was determined through a combination of behavior evaluation, electroencephalogram and electromyogram analysis. Information in the spike trains was determined by using Lempel-Ziv Complexity. Complexity was used to estimate the entropy of neural discharges and thus the information content (Amigóet al. Neural Comput., 2004, 16: 717-736). The information content in spike trains (range 4-70 bits s−1) was evaluated during different brain states and particularly during the transition periods. Transitions toward states of deeper sleep coincided with a decrease of information, while transitions to the awake state resulted in an increase in information. Changes in both directions were of the same magnitude, about 30%. Information in spike trains showed a high temporal correlation between neurons, reinforcing the idea of the impact of the brain state in the information content of spike trains

    Pseudomonas daroniae sp. nov. and Pseudomonas dryadis sp. nov., isolated from pedunculate oak affected by acute oak decline in the UK

    Twenty-two cream-coloured bacterial strains were isolated from oak trees affected by acute oak decline (AOD) in Southern England. Isolates were Gram-negative, motile, slightly curved rods, aerobic, non-spore-forming, catalase positive and oxidase positive. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis placed the strains in two separate phylogenetic clusters in the Pseudomonas straminea group, with Pseudomonas flavescens as the closest phylogenetic relative. Multilocus sequence analyses of the gyrB, rpoD and rpoB genes supported the delineation of the strains into two separate taxa, which could be differentiated phenotypically and chemotaxonomically from each other, and their closest relatives. Average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA-DNA hybridization values revealed percentages of genome similarity below the species threshold (95 and 70 %, respectively) between the two taxa and the closest relatives, confirming their novel species status. Therefore, on the basis of this polyphasic approach we propose two novel Pseudomonas species, Pseudomonasdaroniae sp. nov. (type strain FRB 228T=LMG 31087T=NCPPB 4672T) and Pseudomonasdryadis sp. nov. (type strain FRB 230T=LMG 31087T=NCPPB 4673T)
