    Tuning frequency band gaps of tensegrity metamaterials with local and global prestress

    This work studies the acoustic band structure of tensegrity metamaterials, and the possibility to tune the dispersion relation of such systems by playing with local and global prestress variables. Building on established results of the Bloch-Floquet theory, the paper first investigates the linearized response of chains composed of tensegrity units and lumped masses, which undergo small oscillations around an initial equilibrium state. The stiffness of the units in such a state varies with an internal self-stress induced by prestretching the cables forming the tensegrity units, and the global prestress induced by the application of compression forces to the terminal bases. The given results show that frequency band gaps of monoatomic and biatomic chains can be effectively altered by the fine tuning of local and global prestress parameters, while keeping material properties unchanged. Numerical results on the wave dynamics of chains under moderately large displacements confirm the presence of frequency band gaps of the examined systems in the elastically hardening regime.     Management of pheochromocytoma during pregnancy from diagnosis to laparoscopic adrenalectomy. A case report and review of literature

    INTRODUCTION: Pheochromocytoma is an endocrine tumour of chromaffin cells. It can be diagnosed either sporadically or in the context of hereditary syndromes (e.g. Von Hippel Lindau, Neurofibromatosis type 1 and multiple neuroendocrine neoplasia type 2). During pregnancy, its frequency is very low (about 0,007%). This tumour causes paroxysmal hypertension in 0,1-0,6% pregnant women, because of an overproduction of catecholamines. If undiagnosed and nontreated, it's associated with high maternal and fetal mortality (40-50%). We report the case of a 30-year-old female diagnosed with pheochromocytoma during pregnancy at week 31 of gestation. In a multidisciplinary team made of surgeons, gynaecologists, anaesthetists, geneticists and endocrinologists we evaluated the case and according to literature, we choose a surgical approach after childbirth: performing a laparoscopic right adrenalectomy. DISCUSSION: In pregnancy, pheochromocytoma is a rare clinical condition. Gold standard treatment is laparoscopic adrenalectomy. However, the optimum timing of surgery is a challenge. CONCLUSION: Timely diagnosis of pheochromocytoma in pregnant women with hypertension and appropriate therapeutic management can lead to improve maternal, fetal and neonatal outcomes. The multidisciplinary team is necessary to recognize the symptoms and to adopt the right pre - and post - operative treatment. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy after delivery is safe and feasible even though the surgical procedure should be performed by an experienced surgeon.     Epidemiology and Microbiology of Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Preliminary Results of a National Registry

    Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) represent a wide range of clinical conditions characterized by a considerable variety of clinical presentations and severity. Their aetiology can also vary, with numerous possible causative pathogens. While other authors previously published analyses on several types of SSTI and on restricted types of patients, we conducted a large nationwide surveillance programme on behalf of the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases to assess the clinical and microbiological characteristics of the whole SSTI spectrum, from mild to severe life-threatening infections, in both inpatients and outpatients. Twenty-five Infectious Diseases (ID) Centres throughout Italy collected prospectively data concerning both the clinical and microbiological diagnosis of patients affected by SSTIs via an electronic case report form. All the cases included in our database, independently from their severity, have been managed by ID specialists joining the study while SSTIs from other wards/clinics have been excluded from this analysis. Here, we report the preliminary results of our study, referring to a 12-month period (October 2016‚ÄďSeptember 2017). During this period, the study population included 254 adult patients and a total of 291 SSTI diagnoses were posed, with 36 patients presenting more than one SSTIs. The type of infection diagnosed, the aetiological micro-organisms involved and some notes on their antimicrobial susceptibilities were collected and are reported herein. The enrichment of our registry is ongoing, but these preliminary results suggest that further analysis could soon provide useful information to better understand the national epidemiologic data and the current clinical management of SSTIs in Italy

    Search for new particles in events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A search is presented for new particles produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, using events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb(-1), collected in 2017-2018 with the CMS detector. Machine learning techniques are used to define separate categories for events with narrow jets from initial-state radiation and events with large-radius jets consistent with a hadronic decay of a W or Z boson. A statistical combination is made with an earlier search based on a data sample of 36 fb(-1), collected in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the standard model background expectation determined from control samples in data. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the branching fraction of an invisible decay of the Higgs boson, as well as constraints on simplified models of dark matter, on first-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to quarks and neutrinos, and on models with large extra dimensions. Several of the new limits, specifically for spin-1 dark matter mediators, pseudoscalar mediators, colored mediators, and leptoquarks, are the most restrictive to date.Peer reviewe
