The social cognition of medical knowledge, with special reference to childhood epilepsy
This paper arose out of an engagement in medical communication courses at a Gulf university. It deploys a theoretical framework derived from a (critical) sociocognitive approach to discourse analysis in order to investigate three aspects of medical discourse relating to childhood epilepsy: the cognitive processes that are entailed in relating different types of medical knowledge to their communicative context; the types of medical knowledge that are constituted in the three different text types analysed; and the relationship between these different types of medical knowledge and the discursive features of each text type. The paper argues that there is a cognitive dimension to the human experience of understanding and talking about one specialized from of medical knowledge. It recommends that texts be studied in medical communication courses not just in terms of their discrete formal features but also critically, in terms of the knowledge which they produce, transmit and reproduce
Atomic quasi-Bragg diffraction in a magnetic field
We report on a new technique to split an atomic beam coherently with an
easily adjustable splitting angle. In our experiment metastable helium atoms in
the |{1s2s}^3S_1 M=1> state diffract from a polarization gradient light field
formed by counterpropagating \sigma^+ and \sigma^- polarized laser beams in the
presence of a homogeneous magnetic field. In the near-adiabatic regime, energy
conservation allows the resonant exchange between magnetic energy and kinetic
energy. As a consequence, symmetric diffraction of |M=0> or |M=-1> atoms in a
single order is achieved, where the order can be chosen freely by tuning the
magnetic field. We present experimental results up to 6th order diffraction (24
\hbar k momentum splitting, i.e., 2.21 m/s in transverse velocity) and present
a simple theoretical model that stresses the similarity with conventional Bragg
scattering. The resulting device constitutes a flexible, adjustable,
large-angle, three-way coherent atomic beam splitter with many potential
applications in atom optics and atom interferometry.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

‘Bring back Hitler’s gas chambers’: asylum seeking, Nazis and facebook – a discursive analysis
In this article, we explore how talk about Nazis is used in Internet discussions regarding asylum seeking, and the issue of whether or not opposition to asylum seeking is racist. Discursive analysis was conducted on discussions about asylum seeking from the social networking website Facebook, where references to Nazis were made. Three strategies were identified: (1) people supporting asylum seeking accuse asylum opponents of being racist by referring to Nazis; (2) opponents of asylum seeking deal with such accusations by arguing that the debate is being suppressed because of references to Nazis; (3) in the final, and most striking, strategy, opponents of asylum draw upon ideas associated with the Nazis and Hitler to bring about their anti-asylum position. These findings are discussed in relation to how the link between Nazis and racism is emerging in the asylum debat
Anisotropic and strong negative magneto-resistance in the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Se3
We report on high-field angle-dependent magneto-transport measurements on
epitaxial thin films of Bi2Se3, a three-dimensional topological insulator. At
low temperature, we observe quantum oscillations that demonstrate the
simultaneous presence of bulk and surface carriers. The magneto- resistance of
Bi2Se3 is found to be highly anisotropic. In the presence of a parallel
electric and magnetic field, we observe a strong negative longitudinal
magneto-resistance that has been consid- ered as a smoking-gun for the presence
of chiral fermions in a certain class of semi-metals due to the so-called axial
anomaly. Its observation in a three-dimensional topological insulator implies
that the axial anomaly may be in fact a far more generic phenomenon than

Novel routes towards bioplastics from plants: elucidation of the methylperillate biosynthesis pathway from <i>Salvia dorisiana </i>trichomes
Plants produce a large variety of highly functionalized terpenoids. Functional groups such as partially unsaturated rings and carboxyl groups provide handles to use these compounds as feedstock for biobased commodity chemicals. For instance, methylperillate, a monoterpenoid found in Salvia dorisiana, may be used for this purpose, as it carries both an unsaturated ring and a methylated carboxyl group. The biosynthetic pathway of methylperillate in plants is still unclear. In this work, we identified glandular trichomes from S. dorisiana as the location of biosynthesis and storage of methylperillate. mRNA from purified trichomes was used to identify four genes that can encode the pathway from geranyl diphosphate towards methylperillate. This pathway includes a (–)-limonene synthase (SdLS), a limonene 7-hydroxylase (SdL7H, CYP71A76), and a perillyl alcohol dehydrogenase (SdPOHDH). We also identified a terpene acid methyltransferase, perillic acid O-methyltransferase (SdPAOMT), with homology to salicylic acid OMTs. Transient expression in Nicotiana benthamiana of these four genes, in combination with a geranyl diphosphate synthase to boost precursor formation, resulted in production of methylperillate. This demonstrates the potential of these enzymes for metabolic engineering of a feedstock for biobased commodity chemicals
Semiclassical corrections to the interaction energy of a hard-sphere Boltzmann gas
Quantum effects in statistical mechanics are important when the thermal
wavelength is of the order of, or greater than, the mean interatomic spacing.
This is examined at depth taking the example of a hard-sphere Boltzmann gas.
Using the virial expansion for the equation of state, it is shown that the
interaction energy of a classical hard-sphere gas is exactly zero. When the
(second) virial coefficient of such a gas is obtained quantum mechanically,
however, the quantum contribution to the interaction energy is shown to be
substantial. The importance of the semiclassical corrections to the interaction
