    Tailored Print Communication and Telephone Motivational Interviewing Are Equally Successful in Improving Multiple Lifestyle Behaviors in a Randomized Controlled Trial

    Background: Computer tailoring and motivational interviewing show promise in promoting lifestyle change, despite few head-to-head comparative studies. Purpose: Vitalum is a randomized controlled trial in which the efficacy of these methods was compared in changing physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption in middle-aged Dutch adults. Methods: Participants (n?=?1,629) were recruited via 23 general practices and randomly received either four tailored print letters, four motivational telephone calls, two of each type of intervention, or no information. The primary outcomes were absolute change in self-reported physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption. Results: All three intervention groups (i.e., the tailored letters, the motivational calls, and the combined version) were equally and significantly more effective than the control group in increasing physical activity (hours/day), intake of fruit (servings/day), and consumption of vegetables (grams/day) from baseline to the intermediate measurement (week 25), follow-up 1 (week 47) and 2 (week 73). Effect sizes (Cohen's d) ranged from 0.15 to 0.18. Participants rated the interventions positively; interviews were more positively evaluated than letters. Conclusions: Tailored print communication and telephone motivational interviewing or their combination are equally successful in changing multiple behaviors. © 2010 The Author(s)

    Commitment of cultural minorities in organizations:Effects of leadership and pressure to conform

    PURPOSE: In this study, we investigated the commitment of cultural minorities and majorities in organizations. We examined how contextual factors, such as pressure to conform and leadership styles, affect the commitment of minority and majority members. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A field study was conducted on 107 employees in a large multinational corporation. FINDINGS: We hypothesize and found that cultural minorities felt more committed to the organization than majority members, thereby challenging the existing theoretical view that cultural minorities will feel less committed. We also found that organizational pressure to conform and effective leadership increased the commitment of minorities. IMPLICATIONS: Our findings indicate that organizational leaders and researchers should not only focus on increasing and maintaining the commitment of minority members, but should also consider how majority members react to cultural socialization and integration processes. The commitment of minority members can be further enhanced by effective leadership. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: In this study, we challenge the existing theoretical view based on similarity attraction theory and relational demography theory, that cultural minorities would feel less committed to the organization. Past research has mainly focused on minority groups, thereby ignoring the reaction of the majority to socialization processes. In this study, we show that cultural minorities can be more committed than majority members in organizations. Therefore, the perceptions of cultural majority members of socialization processes should also be considered in research on cultural diversity and acculturation

    Perturbation of the yeast N-acetyltransferase NatB induces elevation of protein phosphorylation levels

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The addition of an acetyl group to protein N-termini is a widespread co-translational modification. NatB is one of the main N-acetyltransferases that targets a subset of proteins possessing an N-terminal methionine, but so far only a handful of substrates have been reported. Using a yeast <it>nat3Δ </it>strain, deficient for the catalytic subunit of NatB, we employed a quantitative proteomics strategy to identify NatB substrates and to characterize downstream effects in <it>nat3Δ</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Comparing by proteomics WT and <it>nat3Δ </it>strains, using metabolic <sup>15</sup>N isotope labeling, we confidently identified 59 NatB substrates, out of a total of 756 detected acetylated protein N-termini. We acquired in-depth proteome wide measurements of expression levels of about 2580 proteins. Most remarkably, NatB deletion led to a very significant change in protein phosphorylation.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Protein expression levels change only marginally in between WT and <it>nat3Δ</it>. A comparison of the detected NatB substrates with their orthologous revealed remarkably little conservation throughout the phylogenetic tree. We further present evidence of post-translational N-acetylation on protein variants at non-annotated N-termini. Moreover, analysis of downstream effects in <it>nat3Δ </it>revealed elevated protein phosphorylation levels whereby the kinase Snf1p is likely a key element in this process.</p

    Abstract The clustering of cobalt in CoAPO-5 is studied by means of quantitative 31p MAS NMR. To explain the amount of &quot;&apos;NMR-invisible&quot; P as function of the cobalt content, clusters consisting of at least five cobalt atoms have to be present inside the framework. Probably, cobalt atoms belonging to one cluster are situated in the wall of one and the salne pore. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V

    KB DDHT project 8: Non-destructive and non-invasive sensor technologies in food supply chains : project deliverables 1.1-1.4

    This report details the activities carried out in 2019 in the KB DDHT project 8 “Exploring the potential of non-destructive and non-invasive sensor technologies in food supply chains”. It compiles all four deliverables of this project as a single narrative. There are five case studies at the core of this project which address animal welfare, indoor farming, inspection of fresh food products, personalized nutrition advise and food fraud detection. Multiple activities were planned in these case studies with main focus on sensor technologies for non-destructive and non-invasive sensing. One of the key activities was to conduct a survey of sensor technologies applicable and potentially suitable for each case study. In addition, for each case study, one or more experiments were conducted which involved data acquisition using novel sensors as well as building knowledge on data analysis of data from the new sensors. Furthermore, as one of the goal of this project is to explore new sensor technologies, it is expected that this project will generate valuable data. Therefore, focus was also on FAIR data sharing and management. A workshop was organized in collaboration with WDCC on this topic. Most of the case studies also aligned with OnePlanet Research centre, and as a result multiple experiments are in planning for 2020 in cooperation with OnePlanet
