    A highly stable and efficient organic microcavity polariton laser

However, device stability remains a challenge, in part due to material degradation during deposition of the top dielectric mirror. We demonstrate polariton lasers based on 4,4Ā“-Bis(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)styryl)biphenyl (BSBCz) as active material that achieve a low lasing threshold of 8.7 Ī¼J/cm2, and we show that a ZrO2 protection layer between active layer and top mirror significantly improves stability. Optimized devices exhibit minimal degradation after 100,000 excitation pulses at 3.8 times above threshold. Our findings establish BSBCz as an attractive candidate for future injection driven polariton lasers.Peer reviewe

    Cosmic rays beyond the boundary of the heliosphere

    In August of 2012 the Voyager 1 space probe has left the solar-wind bubble of ionized gas we call the heliosphere and entered the denser and colder environment of the interstellar cloud surrounding the solar system. Energetic charged particles underwent dramatic changes past the heliopause: the heliospheric ions disappeared completely, while the galactic cosmic rays were for the first time measured in their unmodulated state. The interstellar medium turned out to be almost entirely devoid of turbulent magnetic fluctuations, therefore the transport of cosmic rays is governed by a large-scale geometry of the magnetic field. We discuss observations of heliospheric ions, including anomalous cosmic rays, near the heliopause transition, and propose interpretations of the measured intensities and pitch-angle distributions based on gradient drift in a weakly nonuniform magnetic field. The heliopause transition appears to be permeated by magnetic flux tubes connected to the interstellar space and facilitating particle escape. These flux tubes may be a product of interchange instability driven by a plasma pressure gradient across the heliopause. The curvature of magnetic field lines and the anti-sunward gradient in plasma kinetic pressure provide conditions favorable for an interchange. The two flux tube crossings by the spacecraft allowed an indirect measurement of the plasma radial velocity near the heliopause

    Energetic Particle Anisotropies at the Heliospheric Boundary. II. Transient Features and Rigidity Dependence

    In the preceding paper, we showed that large second-order anisotropies of heliospheric ions measured by the Voyager 1 space probe during the August 2012 boundary crossing event could be explained by a magnetic shear across the heliopause preventing particles streaming along the magnetic field from escaping the inner heliosheath. According to Stone et al., the penetration distance of heliospheric ions into the outer heliosheath had a strong dependence on the particle's Larmor radius. By comparing hydrogen, helium, and oxygen ions with the same energy per nucleon, these authors argued that this effect must be attributed to larger cyclotron radii of heavier species rather than differences in velocity. We propose that gradient drift in a nonuniform magnetic field was the cause of both the large second-order anisotropies and the spatial differentiation based on the ion's rigidity. A latitudinal gradient of magnetic field strength of about 10% per AU between 2012.7 and 2012.9 could have provided drift motion sufficient to match both LECP and CRS Voyager 1 observations. We explain the transient intensity dropout observed prior to the heliocliff using flux tube structures embedded in the heliosheath and magnetically connected to interstellar space. Finally, this paper reports a new indirect measurement of the plasma radial velocity at the heliopause on the basis of the time difference between two cosmic-ray telescopes measuring the same intensity dropout

    Cochlear implantation is a timeous and cost-effective solution for severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and has transformed the lives of many individuals with significant hearing loss. The advent of cochlear implantation has meant that, for the first time, one of the senses (hearing), having been entirely lost, can be restored. The previous article in this series sketched the problem of severe-toprofound SNHL, and how cochlear implantation can overcome this, how a cochlear implant (CI) works, the history of cochlear implantation and the principles of the multidisciplinary CI team. The current status of cochlear implantation in South Africa (SA) is the subject of discussion in this article, the second of this two-part series on cochlear implantation.     The Influence of Intensity of Tree Thinning on the Redistribution of Soil Water in Southern African Mopani Veld

    The investigation was conducted on a densely wooded area in the Mopani veld of South Africa. Six plots were subjected to different intensities of tree thinning, ranging from a totally cleared plot (0 %) to plots thinned to the equivalent of 10%, 20%, 35%, 50% and 75% of the leaf biomass of a control plot (100%). Soil water measurements were taken at six different depths to a depth of 825 mm. The infiltration of rain water and redistribution within the soil profile exhibited marked differences between experimental plots. The soil water was predominantly held at a very shallow depth (\u3c450 mm). Increased infiltration in plots with a low tree density occurred and was associated with the establishment of grasses. No stratification of soil water between the topsoil and subsoil could be established which means that the C. mopane trees and grasses are in direct competition for soil water in the upper soil layers

    Comorbidities of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura: A Population-Based Study

    A person experiencing more than one medical condition may have ambiguous clinical presentation. ITP is a serious autoimmune disease with little epidemiological evidence on its burden, risk factors, and comorbidities. Using the United Kingdom general practice research database, we conducted a 14 years population-based case control-type study to explore medical conditions more likely to cooccur with ITP and their temporal relationship in association with ITP. ITP patients were matched to non-ITP on practice, age, gender, and follow-up period. Potential comorbidities were represented by patients' medical information at the preferred term level of the MedDRA international classification. As well as death (OR = 60.0; 95% CI [4.47ā€“806.0]) and known clinical signs and symptoms of ITP, ITP is associated with considerable number of medical conditions. The association between ITP and some of these conditions is apparent both before and after ITP diagnosis. Specific targeted studies can now be setup to reexamine observed associations

    EndoBarrierĀ®: a safe and effective novel treatment for obesity and type 2 diabetes?

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obesity associated with diabetes mellitus is a significant worldwide problem associated with considerable health care costs. Whilst surgical intervention is effective, it is invasive, costly and associated with complications. This study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the EndoBarrierĀ®, a duodenal-jejunal sleeve bypass as an alternative treatment of diabetes mellitus in obese patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a multi-centre, non-randomised trial recruiting obese patients with type 2 diabetes from three sites in the UK. Eligible participants had a BMI of 30-50Ā kg/m2and HbA1c levels of 7.5-10%. The study comprised a 12-month period with the EndoBarrierĀ® inserted and a 6-month follow-up period after it had been explanted. The primary study outcomes were weight, BMI, HbA1c levels and fasting insulin and glucose levels. RESULTS: Forty-five patients were recruited and 31 patients (69%) completed the 12-month study period. Significant reductions in weight (95%CI 0.62-29.38; pā€‰<ā€‰0.05) and BMI (95%CI 1.1-8.7; pā€‰<ā€‰0.005) were documented 12Ā months after device insertion. The mean HbA1c was significantly reduced (95%CI 0.1-1.6; pā€‰<ā€‰0.05) after the device insertion period and reductions in metabolic parameters (fasting insulin and glucose levels) were also documented during the study. Adverse events were also assessed in all patients, the vast majority of which were reported as mild. CONCLUSIONS: The EndoBarrierĀ® appears to be a safe and effective treatment strategy in overweight patients with poor glycaemic control despite medical therapy, or in those who are eligible but decline bariatric surgery
