Alternative treatments in the control of psoroptic mange in a flock of organic production sheep.
Abstract
The aim of the experiment was to verify the efficacy of the treatment of psoroptic mange in a flock of Churra sheep farmed under organic production conditions, using alternative methods. One group, C Control (N=9), was given no treatment, a second group, TAH Antihomotoxic (N=10), was intramuscularly administered an antihomotoxic preparation every two days, thus receiving a total of seven injections over a two-week period. The third group, TCI Citronella (N=10), was topically administered a 1% solution of 50%essential Citronella Java oil and 50% Potassium Soap twice daily, in each milking, during the two-week period. A fourth group, TCIT Citronella+Thymol (N=10), was topically administered Citronella with 1% mother tincture of Thymol to boost the acaricide activity. The results obtained were analysed by ANOVA for scores and improvement of lesions. At the end of the experiment, TCI and TCIT showed significantly fewer lesions (P<0.05) than the control group and TAH, no differences being detected between the latter two groups. Improvement was significantly higher (P<0.05) in TCI (45%) and TCTT (48%) in comparison with the control group, which only showed 3% improvement. TAH improved by 30% (P<0.05) in comparison with the control group. There were no significant differences between TCI and TCIT.
In conclusion, treatment with essential Citronella Java oil and potassium soap can be used as an alternative to conventional methods to control psoroptic mange
Classification of Domestic Water Consumption Using an ANFIS Model
This work presents classification results of different water outputs in a house. Input variables are time and flow measurements in a point of the network distribution, and the identified classes are relevant consumptions as sink consumption, shower consumption, etc. Due to human influence on consumption data, we selected a classifier based on an interpretable model; that allows the incorporation of knowledge provided by users or experts. Thus, this study is based on the well known Anfis model and AGUA (real data taken for a project being developed in Guadalajara, Mexico) the data set corresponding to a supervised case. The result shows that the proposed algorithm works well, with recognition above 91%, and it could be used for a better profit of domestic water management
Editorial charters and newsroom councils in mewdia corporations: a view from the perspective of corporate social responsability
Editorial charters and professional representation groups in media corporations are major self regulatory tools often cited in the Spanish literature on journalism ethics and deontology, yet many corporations lack them and they are largely invisible to the public with only a few exceptions, such as the Newsroom Council of the Spanish public national television network TVE. This limited implementation contrasts with the increasing number of media corporations that have adopted corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies that should take into account the expectations of journalists as internal stakeholders. The present study examines the relationships between editorial management and CSR management as a possible approach to integrating corporate governance and news governance in media corporations. The study is based on in depth interviews of members of newsroom councils in Spanish media companies. Discourse analysis of these interviews indicates that journalists in media organizations do not consider that their companies’ CSR policies take into account their professional expectations, in the sense that journalists in these corporations do not perceive news governance and CSR management to be aligned. At the same time, the precarious labor market has led many journalists to stand up less to their employers on questions related to journalism standards. Nevertheless, many newsroom councils are effective at communicating complaints, violations and recommendations to corporate governance bodies
The mental and subjective skin: Emotion, empathy, feelings and thermography
[EN]We applied thermography to investigate the cognitive neuropsychology of emotions, using
it as a somatic marker of subjective experience during emotional tasks. We obtained results
that showed significant correlations between changes in facial temperature and mental set.
The main result was the change in the temperature of the nose, which tended to decrease
with negative valence stimuli but to increase with positive emotions and arousal patterns.
However, temperature change was identified not only in the nose, but also in the forehead,
the oro-facial area, the cheeks and in the face taken as a whole. Nevertheless, thermic facial
changes, mostly nasal temperature changes, correlated positively with participants’
empathy scores and their performance. We found that temperature changes in the face
may reveal maps of bodily sensations associated with different emotions and feelings like
love
Ultra-processed foods and type-2 diabetes risk in the sun project: A prospective cohort study
The association between ultra-processed foods (UPF) consumption and the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) has not been much explored. We aimed to evaluate the association between consumption of UPF and the incidence of T2D
Egg consumption and dyslipidemia in a Mediterranean cohort
Introduction and objectives: Our aim was to prospectively evaluate the association between egg consumption and dyslipidemia in a Mediterranean cohort.
Methods: We followed-up 13,104 Spanish university graduates for a mean period of 8 years. Dietary habits at baseline were assessed using
a validated semi-quantitative 136-item food-frequency questionnaire. Self-reported blood concentrations of total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins cholesterol (HDL-c) and triglycerides were evaluated according to categories of egg consumption after 6 and 8 years of follow-up. We
also assessed the association between baseline egg consumption and the incidence of hypercholesterolemia, low HDL-c concentrations and
hypertriglyceridemia during follow-up.
Results: We observed a significant inverse association for intermediate levels of egg consumption (2 to 4 eggs/week vs. less than 1 egg/week)
and hypertriglyceridemia with OR = 0.71 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.54 to 0.93, p < 0.05) in the multivariable-adjusted model. Using HDL-c
values after 8-year follow-up, we found an association between higher egg consumption and lower HDL-c levels (p for trend = 0.02) with an
adjusted difference of –4.01 mg/dl (-7.42 to -0.61) for > 4 vs. < 1 egg/week. Lower means of triglycerides were found in each of the three
upper categories of egg consumption compared to the lowest category (< 1 egg/week) with significant results for some of these categories both
after 6 and 8 year follow-up.
Conclusions: Our data do not support that higher egg consumption was associated with abnormal blood levels of total cholesterol or triglycerides;
an inverse association with HDL-c as a quantitative variable was found only in one of our analyses.
casos, a mayor puntuación mayor calidad. Se utilizó la
regresión lineal múltiple para determinar la asociación
entre la frecuencia de CFC (4 categorías) y la puntuación
de ambos índices, y la regresión logística para medir la
asociación entre la frecuencia de CFC y un bajo ICHC o
ICG (<percentil 25).
Resultados: Los participantes mostraron una media
de ICHC e ICG de 11,3 (DE 3,2) y 1,7 (DE 0,5), respectivamente.
Una mayor frecuencia de CFC (≥ 2 veces / semana)
se asoció con un menor ICHC (ß: -0,29, IC 95%:
-0,41 a -0,17, p <0,001), y con un menor ICG (ß: -0,02,
IC 95%: -0,03 a -0,001, p <0,03). Los participantes con
CFC ≥ 2 veces/semana tuvieron mayor riesgo de peor
ICHC (OR: 1,31, IC 95%: 1,17-1,46, p <0,001), pero no
de peor ICG (OR: 0,93 IC 95%: 0,83-1,03, p 0,194).
Conclusiones: Hacer con mayor frecuencia CFC se
asoció con una peor calidad de grasas en la dieta y especialmente
con peor calidad de hidratos de carbono. Estos
resultados destacan la importancia de la educación nutricional
dirigida a los consumidores de CFC.Objective: To investigate the association between eating-
away-from-home (EAFH) and a) the quality of dietary
carbohydrate intake and b) the quality of fat intake.
Material and methods: We assessed 19,371 participants
in the SUN cohort who completed a validated baseline
food frequency questionnaire. Quality indices of
carbohydrate (CQI) and fat (FQI) were used. Multiple
regression models were fitted to determine the association
between the frequency of EAFH (4 categories) and
both indices. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess
the association between the frequency of EAFH and
low CQI or FQI (<25th percentile).
Results: Participants showed an average CQI and FQI
of 11,3 (SD 3,2) and 1,7 (SD 0,5), respectively. A higher
frequency of EAFH (≥ 2 times/week) was associated with
a poorer CQI and a poorer FQI. For CQI, the adjusted
mean difference was -0,29, 95%CI: -0,41, -0,17 (p for
trend <0,001), and for FQI it was -0,02, 95%CI: -0,03,
-0,001 (p for trend 0,03). Participants with a highest frequency
(≥ 2 times/week) of EAFH had higher adjusted
risk of a poorer CQI, (adjusted OR 1,31, 95%CI 1,17,
1,46, p for trend <0,001), but this habit (EAFH) was unrelated
to FQI (adjusted OR 0,93, 95%CI: 0,83, 1,03, p
for trend 0,194).
Key findings: A higher frequency of EAFH was associated
with a poorer quality of dietary fat, and particularly,
dietary carbohohydrate. These findings highlight
the importance of nutritional education addressed to
consumers who frequently do out-of-home meals
Fruit and vegetable consumption is inversely associated with blood pressure in a Mediterranean population with a high vegetable-fat intake: the Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra (SUN) Study
There is evidence that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables reduces blood pressure (BP). Characteristically, the Mediterranean diet is rich in plant-derived foods and also in fat, but studies conducted in Mediterranean countries to relate diet to BP are scarce. We studied the association between fruit and vegetable consumption and BP in a cross-sectional analysis of 4393 participants in the Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra (SUN) Study, an ongoing dynamic cohort study in Spain. Diet was measured using a food-frequency questionnaire previously
validated in Spain. Fat represented more than 37% total energy intake. Subjects were considered to have undiagnosed hypertension if they reported systolic BP 90 mmHg, and not a medical diagnosis of hypertension. The adjusted prevalence odds ratio of undiagnosed hypertension (upper v. lowest quintile) was 0·58 (95% CI 0·36, 0·91; P for trend 0·01) for vegetable consumption and 0·68 (95% CI 0·43, 1·09; P for trend 0·10) for fruit consumption. Comparing those in the highest quintile of both fruit and vegetable consumption with those in the lowest quintile of both food groups, the prevalence odds ratio was 0·23 (95% CI 0·10, 0·55; P¼0·001), after adjusting for risk factors for hypertension and other dietary exposures. In a Mediterranean population with an elevated fat consumption, a high fruit and vegetable intake is inversely associated with BP levels
A functional IL1RL1 variant regulates corticosteroid-induced sST2 expression in ulcerative colitis
Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus. The ST2/IL33 signalling pathway has been associated with ulcerative colitis (UC). ST2, encoded by the IL1RL1 gene, is expressed as both a membrane-anchored receptor (ST2L) activated by IL33 and as a soluble receptor (sST2) with anti-inflammatory properties. In UC patients, sST2 is further increased by corticosteroid treatment; however, the glucocorticoid-mediated molecular regulation remains unknown. We therefore tested whether genetic variants in the IL1RL1 distal promoter are involved in UC and affect glucocorticoid-mediated ST2 expression. Serum ST2 levels and genetic variants in the IL1RL1 distal promoter were examined by ELISA and PCR sequencing in UC patients receiving corticosteroids. Glucocorticoid-mediated ST2 production was evaluated in intestinal mucosa cultures. Molecular regulation of glucocorticoid-mediated ST2 was assessed by RT-qPCR, ChIP assay and luciferase reporter assay. Dexamethasone effect on ST2 transcript expression was analyzed in leukocytes and related to IL1RL1 variants. Sequencing of a distal IL1RL1 promoter region demonstrated that SNPs rs6543115(C) and rs6543116(A) are associated with increased sST2 in UC patients on corticosteroids. Dexamethasone up-regulated sST2 transcription through interaction with the glucocorticoid-response element (GRE) carrying rs6543115(C) variant. Our data indicate that IL1RL1 SNPs rs6543115(C) confer susceptibility to UC and is contained in the GRE, which may modulate glucocorticoid-induced sST2 expression.https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-10465-
