Spatial structures and dynamics of kinetically constrained models for glasses
Kob and Andersen's simple lattice models for the dynamics of structural
glasses are analyzed. Although the particles have only hard core interactions,
the imposed constraint that they cannot move if surrounded by too many others
causes slow dynamics. On Bethe lattices a dynamical transition to a partially
frozen phase occurs. In finite dimensions there exist rare mobile elements that
destroy the transition. At low vacancy density, , the spacing, ,
between mobile elements diverges exponentially or faster in . Within the
mobile elements, the dynamics is intrinsically cooperative and the
characteristic time scale diverges faster than any power of (although
slower than ). The tagged-particle diffusion coefficient vanishes roughly

Isolation and characterization of oxidizedoligogalacturonides: meccanism of dampening of damps
Oligogalacturonides (OGs) released upon partial degradation of homogalacturonan, are a
well-known class of Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns (DAMPs). Besides inducing immunity,
OGs negatively affect plant growth by antagonizing auxin responses.
Because the recognition of DAMPs poses the intrinsic risk of activating an exaggerated
response that may impair plant survival, dampening mechanisms of DAMPs should exist.
Transgenic Arabidopsis plants (OGM plants) expressing a chimeric protein called "OGmachine"
accumulate oligogalacturonides (OGs) in their tissues and exhibit enhanced resistance to
a variety of pathogens; however the growth of these plants is severely impaired. The prolonged
release of OGs triggers defense responses that in the long term are deleterious for the plant.
We used the OGM plants as a tool to investigate a possible regulatory mechanism by
searching for elicitor-inactive OGs that may derive from elicitor-active OGs through an enzymatic
modification.
By analyzing the OGs produced in the transgenic plants, modified OGs were isolated. The
nature of the modification was investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and
resulted to be the oxidation to galactaric acid of the residue at the reducing end of OGs (oxOGs).
OxOGs were tested for their ability to induce defense responses and antagonize auxin responses. In
all experiments, they were inactive as compared to the corresponding typical OGs.
We succeeded to isolate and characterize one of the enzymes that causes the inactivation of
OGs: it is a FAD binding oxidase, that we named OGOX1, capable of producing elicitor-inactive
oxidized OGs and H2O2
Relaxation times of kinetically constrained spin models with glassy dynamics
We analyze the density and size dependence of the relaxation time for
kinetically constrained spin systems. These have been proposed as models for
strong or fragile glasses and for systems undergoing jamming transitions. For
the one (FA1f) or two (FA2f) spin facilitated Fredrickson-Andersen model at any
density and for the Knight model below the critical density at which
the glass transition occurs, we show that the persistence and the spin-spin
time auto-correlation functions decay exponentially. This excludes the
stretched exponential relaxation which was derived by numerical simulations.
For FA2f in , we also prove a super-Arrhenius scaling of the form
. For FA1f in = we
rigorously prove the power law scalings recently derived in \cite{JMS} while in
we obtain upper and lower bounds consistent with findings therein.
Our results are based on a novel multi-scale approach which allows to analyze
in presence of kinetic constraints and to connect time-scales and
dynamical heterogeneities. The techniques are flexible enough to allow a
variety of constraints and can also be applied to conservative stochastic
lattice gases in presence of kinetic constraints.Comment: 4 page
A recent appreciation of the singular dynamics at the edge of chaos
We study the dynamics of iterates at the transition to chaos in the logistic
map and find that it is constituted by an infinite family of Mori's -phase
transitions. Starting from Feigenbaum's function for the diameters
ratio, we determine the atypical weak sensitivity to initial conditions associated to each -phase transition and find that it obeys the form
suggested by the Tsallis statistics. The specific values of the variable at
which the -phase transitions take place are identified with the specific
values for the Tsallis entropic index in the corresponding . We
describe too the bifurcation gap induced by external noise and show that its
properties exhibit the characteristic elements of glassy dynamics close to
vitrification in supercooled liquids, e.g. two-step relaxation, aging and a
relationship between relaxation time and entropy.Comment: Proceedings of: Verhulst 200 on Chaos, Brussels 16-18 September 2004,
