    A Rule-Based Consultant for Accelerator Beam Scheduling Used in the CERN PS Complex

    The CERN PS accelerator complex consists of nine interacting accelerators which work together to produce particle beams for different end users, varying in particle type, energy, time structure, and geometry. The beam production schedule is time sliced and depends on the current operational requirements and dynamically on the accelerator status, so that production schedule changes occur in real time. Many potential schedules are not valid due to various system constraints and these constraints vary over time as new operational modes are introduced. In order to ensure that only valid schedules are given to the complex, an automated tool has been developed to indicate whether a potential schedule is valid or not. This presentation describes the method by which the validity of a beam schedule is determined and how this method was implemented using a rule-based approach based on SQL, avoiding the use of an expert system shell. Both the data to instantiate the rules and the rules themselves are kept in an Oracle data base. The SQL interpreter provides the inference engine for this knowledge-based system. A few examples are presented and the running experience with the tool is discussed

    High speed imaging of traveling waves in a granular material during silo discharge

    We report experimental observations of sound waves in a granular material during resonant silo discharge called silo music. The grain motion was tracked by high speed imaging while the resonance of the silo was detected by accelerometers and acoustic methods. The grains do not oscillate in phase at neighboring vertical locations, but information propagates upward in this system in the form of sound waves. We show that the wave velocity is not constant throughout the silo, but considerably increases towards the lower end of the system, suggesting increased pressure in this region, where the flow changes from cylindrical to converging flow. In the upper part of the silo the wave velocity matches the sound velocity measured in the same material when standing (in the absence of flow). Grain oscillations show a stick-slip character only in the upper part of the silo.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted to Phys. Rev.

    A critical look at the role of the bare parameters in the renormalization of Phi-derivable approximations

    We revisit the renormalization of Phi-derivable approximations from a slightly different point of view than the one which is usually followed in previous works. We pay particular attention to the question of the existence of a solution to the self-consistent equation that defines the two-point function in the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis formalism and to the fact that some of the ultraviolet divergences which appear if one formally expands the solution in powers of the bare coupling do not always appear as divergences at the level of the solution itself. We discuss these issues using a particular truncation of the Phi functional, namely the simplest truncation which brings non-trivial momentum and field dependence to the two-point function.Comment: 30 pages, 12 figure

    A Catalog of Digital Images of 113 Nearby Galaxies

    We present a digital catalog of images of 113 galaxies in this paper. These galaxies are all nearby, bright, large and well resolved. All images were recorded with charge coupled devices (CCDs) at the Palomar Observatory with the 1.5 meter telescope and at the Lowell Observatory with the 1.1 meter telescope. At Palomar we used the Thuan--Gunn g, r and i photometric bands to take 3 images each of 31 spiral galaxies; at Lowell we used the B_J and R bands (2 images per galaxy) of the photometric system by Gullixson et al. (1995) to observe 82 spirals and ellipticals. The galaxies were selected to span the Hubble classification classes. All data are photometrically calibrated with foreground stars removed. Important data on these galaxies published in the "Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies" (RC3) are recorded in the FITS file headers.     Broken phase effective potential in the two-loop Phi-derivable approximation and nature of the phase transition in a scalar theory

    We study the phase transition of a real scalar phi^4 theory in the two-loop Phi-derivable approximation using the imaginary time formalism, extending our previous (analytical) discussion of the Hartree approximation. We combine Fast Fourier Transform algorithms and accelerated Matsubara sums in order to achieve a high accuracy. Our results confirm and complete earlier ones obtained in the real time formalism [1] but which were less accurate due to the integration in Minkowski space and the discretization of the spectral density function. We also provide a complete and explicit discussion of the renormalization of the two-loop Phi-derivable approximation at finite temperature, both in the symmetric and in the broken phase, which was already used in the real-time approach, but never published. Our main result is that the two-loop Phi-derivable approximation suffices to cure the problem of the Hartree approximation regarding the order of the transition: the transition is of the second order type, as expected on general grounds. The corresponding critical exponents are, however, of the mean-field type. Using a "RG-improved" version of the approximation, motivated by our renormalization procedure, we find that the exponents are modified. In particular, the exponent delta, which relates the field expectation value phi to an external field h, changes from 3 to 5, getting then closer to its expected value 4.789, obtained from accurate numerical estimates [2].Comment: 54 pages, 16 figure
