    Spinal nerve segmentation method and dataset construction in endoscopic surgical scenarios

    Endoscopic surgery is currently an important treatment method in the field of spinal surgery and avoiding damage to the spinal nerves through video guidance is a key challenge. This paper presents the first real-time segmentation method for spinal nerves in endoscopic surgery, which provides crucial navigational information for surgeons. A finely annotated segmentation dataset of approximately 10,000 consec-utive frames recorded during surgery is constructed for the first time for this field, addressing the problem of semantic segmentation. Based on this dataset, we propose FUnet (Frame-Unet), which achieves state-of-the-art performance by utilizing inter-frame information and self-attention mechanisms. We also conduct extended exper-iments on a similar polyp endoscopy video dataset and show that the model has good generalization ability with advantageous performance.     The dual effect of background music on creativity: perspectives of music preference and cognitive interference

    Music, an influential environmental factor, significantly shapes cognitive processing and everyday experiences, thus rendering its effects on creativity a dynamic topic within the field of cognitive science. However, debates continue about whether music bolsters, obstructs, or exerts a dual influence on individual creativity. Among the points of contention is the impact of contrasting musical emotions–both positive and negative–on creative tasks. In this study, we focused on traditional Chinese music, drawn from a culture known for its ‘preference for sadness,’ as our selected emotional stimulus and background music. This choice, underrepresented in previous research, was based on its uniqueness. We examined the effects of differing music genres (including vocal and instrumental), each characterized by a distinct emotional valence (positive or negative), on performance in the Alternative Uses Task (AUT). To conduct this study, we utilized an affective arousal paradigm, with a quiet background serving as a neutral control setting. A total of 114 participants were randomly assigned to three distinct groups after completing a music preference questionnaire: instrumental, vocal, and silent. Our findings showed that when compared to a quiet environment, both instrumental and vocal music as background stimuli significantly affected AUT performance. Notably, music with a negative emotional charge bolstered individual originality in creative performance. These results lend support to the dual role of background music in creativity, with instrumental music appearing to enhance creativity through factors such as emotional arousal, cognitive interference, music preference, and psychological restoration. This study challenges conventional understanding that only positive background music boosts creativity and provides empirical validation for the two-path model (positive and negative) of emotional influence on creativity

    The Anti-Inflammatory Effects of a Yin Zhi Huang Soup in an Experimental Autoimmune Prostatitis Rat Model

    The present study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of the Chinese herbal medicine Yin Zhi Huang soup (YZS) in an experimental autoimmune prostatitis (EAP) rat model. In total, 48 rats were randomly divided into the following four groups (n=12/group): saline group, pathological model group, Qianlietai group, and YZS group. We determined the average wet weight of the prostate tissue, the ratio of the wet weight of the prostate tissue to body weight, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels in the blood serum, the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the rats’ prostate tissues, and the pathological changes in the prostate tissue using light microscopy. YZS reduced the rats’ prostate wet weight, the ratio of the prostate wet weight to body weight, and TNF-α levels in the blood serum and inhibited the expression of iNOS in the rats’ prostate tissues (P<0.05). Following YZS treatment, the pathological changes in the rats’ prostates were improved compared with those in the model group (P<0.05). Furthermore, YZS treatment reduced inflammatory changes in the prostate tissue. It also significantly suppressed proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, and chemokines, such as iNOS, in the rat model of EAP

However, the effect of FH on the prognosis of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. We performed a large cohort study in the Chinese population to obtain insight into the prognostic value of FH in patients with operable ESCC.MethodsA total of 1,322 consecutive patients with thoracic ESCC who had undergone esophagectomy between January 1997 and December 2013 were included. The FH group included patients with any degree of FH, while the non-FH group included patients without any degree of FH. In total, 215 patients with FH and 215 without FH were matched using the propensity score matching analysis method to adjust for differences in baseline variables between the two groups. The impact of FH on disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) was estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method and Cox’s proportional hazards models.ResultsBefore matching, 280 (21.2%) patients were included in the FH group and 1,042 (78.8%) in the non-FH group. FH was associated with early pathological T stage (p = 0.001), lymph node-negative status (p = 0.022), and early pathological stage (p = 0.006). After matching, FH was an independent prognostic factor for DFS and OS in ESCC patients. Patients with FH had 35% lower risk of disease progression (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.51–0.84, p = 0.001) and 34% lower risk of death (HR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.51–0.86, p = 0.002) than those without FH. Patients with a family history of digestive tract cancer (FH-DC), a family history of esophageal cancer (FH-EC), FH in first-degree relatives (FH-FD), and more than one relative affected by cancer were associated with favorable DFS and OS as compared to those without FH.ConclusionFH is a favorable independent prognostic factor in ESCC. Patients with FH, especially those with FH-DC, FH-EC, FH-FD, and more than one relative affected by cancer, had improved survival

    Dual adversarial models with cross-coordination consistency constraint for domain adaption in brain tumor segmentation

    The brain tumor segmentation task with different domains remains a major challenge because tumors of different grades and severities may show different distributions, limiting the ability of a single segmentation model to label such tumors. Semi-supervised models (e.g., mean teacher) are strong unsupervised domain-adaptation learners. However, one of the main drawbacks of using a mean teacher is that given a large number of iterations, the teacher model weights converge to those of the student model, and any biased and unstable predictions are carried over to the student. In this article, we proposed a novel unsupervised domain-adaptation framework for the brain tumor segmentation task, which uses dual student and adversarial training techniques to effectively tackle domain shift with MR images. In this study, the adversarial strategy and consistency constraint for each student can align the feature representation on the source and target domains. Furthermore, we introduced the cross-coordination constraint for the target domain data to constrain the models to produce more confident predictions. We validated our framework on the cross-subtype and cross-modality tasks in brain tumor segmentation and achieved better performance than the current unsupervised domain-adaptation and semi-supervised frameworks

    Involvement of claudin-7 in HIV infection of CD4(-) cells

    BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection of CD4(-) cells has been demonstrated, and this may be an important mechanism for HIV transmission. RESULTS: We demonstrated that a membrane protein, claudin-7 (CLDN-7), is involved in HIV infection of CD4(-) cells. A significant increase in HIV susceptibility (2- to 100-fold) was demonstrated when CLDN-7 was transfected into a CD4(-) cell line, 293T. In addition, antibodies against CLDN-7 significantly decreased HIV infection of CD4(-) cells. Furthermore, HIV virions expressing CLDN-7 on their envelopes had a much higher infectivity for 293T CD4(-) cells than the parental HIV with no CLDN-7. RT-PCR results demonstrated that CLDN-7 is expressed in both macrophages and stimulated peripheral blood leukocytes, suggesting that most HIV virions generated in infected individuals have CLDN-7 on their envelopes. We also found that CLDN-7 is highly expressed in urogenital and gastrointestinal tissues. CONCLUSION: Together these results suggest that CLDN-7 may play an important role in HIV infection of CD4(-) cells

In this work,Ag+concentration in electrolyte layer and Ag distribution in dendrites formed during the ECM of 96.5Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu alloy were investigated using Inductively Coupled Plasma Source Mass Spectrometer and ScanningTransmission Electron Microscopy, respectively. Results show that Ag+can only be detected when Ag can re-lease from Ag3Sn during the anodic polarization of 96.5Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu alloy. Under such a condition, Ag couldalso be found in dendrites. Therefore, it can be concluded that Ag participates the ECM of 96.5Sn-3Ag-0.5Cualloy, but it is potential-dependent

    Cross-plane transport in a single-molecule two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunction

    Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (2D-vdWHs) stacked from atomically thick 2D materials are predicted to be a diverse class of electronic materials with unique electronic properties. These properties can be further tuned by sandwiching monolayers of planar organic molecules between 2D materials to form molecular 2D-vdW heterojunctions (M-2D-vdWHs), in which electricity flows in a cross-plane way from one 2D layer to the other via a single molecular layer. Using a newly developed cross-plane break junction (XPBJ) technique, combined with density functional theory calculations, we show that M-2D-vdWHs can be created, and that cross-plane charge transport can be tuned by incorporating guest molecules. More importantly, the M-2D-vdWHs exhibit distinct cross-plane charge transport signatures, which differ from those of molecules undergoing in-plane charge transport
