Is Gamma-ray Absorption by Induced Electric Fields Important in the Pulsar Magnetospheres?

Although the unified formula for gamma-ray absorption process involving both the magnetic field and a perpendicular electric field derived by Daugherty & Lerche (1975) is correct, we argued in this paper that their conclusion that the induced electric fields are important in the pair formation process in the pulsar magnetospheres is wrong and misleading. The key point is that usually the direction of a gamma photon at the emission point observed in the laboratory frame should be (v/c, 0, [1-(v/c)^2]^{1/2}) rather than (0, 0, 1), where v is the co-rotating velocity. This emission direction is just the one which results in zero attenuation coefficient of the gamma photon. Calculation shows that after the photon has moved a distance, its direction lead to the result that the induced electric field is also of minor importance. Thus only gamma-B process is the important mechanism for the pair production in the pulsar magnetospheres. The implications of the modification by ejecting the induced electric field are also discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 Postscript figures, LaTeX, some miscomments on the references of Harding et al are modified, Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letter

Phase diagram of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice

The exact macroscopic wave functions of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice beyond the tight-binding approximation are studied by solving the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations. The phase diagram for superfluid and insulator phases of the condensates is determined analytically according to the macroscopic wave functions of the condensates, which are seen to be traveling matter waves.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure

Variations in radiocarbon ages of various organic fractions in core sediments from Erhai Lake, SW China

Radiocarbon dating was performed for the extracted organic fractions (cellulose-rich and humic acid fractions of plant fragment; fulvic acid, humic acid and humin fractions of humus substance) and shell from core sediments of the Erhai Lake, SW China. The C-14 dating results reveal that there are considerable differences, but there apparently is a humic acid less than or equal to humin < fulvic acid fraction sequence of C-14 age increase. The variability in radiocarbon ages of organic fraction of lake sediment suggests that special caution is necessary when radiocarbon ages of bulk sediments are used. The linear correlation between C-14 age of allochthonous terrestrial macrofossil (plant fragment and shell) and depth indicates roughly a constant sedimentation rate of ca. 0.7 rum yr(-1) in central Erhai Lake since 4500 yr BP. The C-14 ages of the autochthonous humic acid fraction are 210similar to4800 yr shift from "the true C-14 age" obtained by interpolating the corresponding horizontal level to the above C-14 age-depth correlation. Such age difference may be alternatively attributed to a uniform reservoir effect (most likely ca. 300 yr). The period with large C-14 age shift synchronizes with the period of changes in (delta(13)C and ARM intensity and ARM/susceptibility values

    Upper Pseudogap Phase: Magnetic Characterizations

It is proposed that the upper pseudogap phase (UPP) observed in the high-Tc cuprates correspond to the formation of spin singlet pairing under the bosonic resonating-valence-bond (RVB) description. We present a series of evidence in support of such a scenario based on the calculated magnetic properties including uniform spin susceptibility, spin-lattice and spin-echo relaxation rates, which consistently show that strong spin correlations start to develop upon entering the UPP, being enhanced around the momentum (\pi, \pi) while suppressed around (0, 0). The phase diagram in the parameter space of doping concentration, temperature, and external magnetic field, is obtained based on the the bosonic RVB theory. In particular, the competition between the Zeeman splitting and singlet pairing determines a simple relation between the "critical" magnetic field, H_{PG}, and characteristic temperature scale, T0, of the UPP. We also discuss the magnetic behavior in the lower pseudogap phase at a temperature Tv lower than T0, which is characterized by the formation of Cooper pair amplitude where the low-lying spin fluctuations get suppressed at both (0, 0) and (\pi, \pi). Properties of the UPP involving charge channels will be also briefly discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, final version to appear in PR

Signal detection for non-orthogonal space-time block coding over time-selective fading channels

In the case of non-quasi-static (i.e., time-selective fast fading) channels, which do exist in practice, the performance of the existing NO-STBC detectors can suffer from an irreducible error floor. To this end, this letter proposes a zero-forcing-based signal detector, which is not only computationally simple but also highly effective in mitigating the impact of channel variation on system performance
