Adaptive control of CO bending vibration: deciphering field-system dynamics
We combined adaptive closed-loop optimization, phase-shaping with a
restricted search space and imaging to control dynamics and decipher the
optimal pulse. The approach was applied to controlling the amplitude of CO
bending vibration during strong-field Coulomb explosion. The search space was
constrained by expressing the spectral phase as a Taylor series, which
generated pulses with characteristics commensurate with the natural physical
features of this problem. Optimal pulses were obtained that enhanced bending by
up to 56% relative to what is observed with comparably intense, transform
limited pulses. We show that (1) this judicious choice of a reduced parameter
set made unwrapping the dynamics more transparent and (2) the enhancement is
consistent with field-induced structural changes to a bent excited state of
CO, which theoretical simulations have identified as the state from
which the explosion originates.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, added reference
Bulk experimental evidence of half-metallic ferromagnetism in doped manganites
We report precise measurements and quantitative data analysis on the
low-temperature resistivity of several ferromagnetic manganite films. We
clearly show that there exists a T^{4.5} term in low-temperature resistivity,
and that this term is in quantitative agreement with the quantum theory of
two-magnon scattering for half metallic ferromagnets. Our present results
provide the first bulk experimental evidence of half-metallic ferromagnetism in
doped manganites.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Magnetically induced Ferroelectricity in BiCuO
The tetragonal copper oxide BiCuO has an unusual crystal structure
with a three-dimensional network of well separated CuO plaquettes. This
material was recently predicted to host electronic excitations with an
unconventional spectrum and the spin structure of its magnetically ordered
state appearing at T 43 K remains controversial. Here we present the
results of detailed studies of specific heat, magnetic and dielectric
properties of BiCuO single crystals grown by the floating zone
technique, combined with the polarized neutron scattering and high-resolution
X-ray measurements. Our polarized neutron scattering data show Cu spins are
parallel to the plane. Below the onset of the long range antiferromagnetic
ordering we observe an electric polarization induced by an applied magnetic
field, which indicates inversion symmetry breaking by the ordered state of Cu
spins. For the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the tetragonal axis, the
spin-induced ferroelectricity is explained in terms of the linear
magnetoelectric effect that occurs in a metastable magnetic state. A relatively
small electric polarization induced by the field parallel to the tetragonal
axis may indicate a more complex magnetic ordering in BiCuO
Building stock dynamics and its impacts on materials and energy demand in China
China hosts a large amount of building stocks, which is nearly 50 billion square meters. Moreover, annual new construction is growing fast, representing half of the world's total. The trend is expected to continue through the year 2050. Impressive demand for new residential and commercial construction, relative shorter average building lifetime, and higher material intensities have driven massive domestic production of energy intensive building materials such as cement and steel. This paper developed a bottom-up building stock turnover model to project the growths, retrofits and retirements of China's residential and commercial building floor space from 2010 to 2050. It also applied typical material intensities and energy intensities to estimate building materials demand and energy consumed to produce these building materials. By conducting scenario analyses of building lifetime, it identified significant potentials of building materials and energy demand conservation. This study underscored the importance of addressing building material efficiency, improving building lifetime and quality, and promoting compact urban development to reduce energy and environment consequences in China
SUSY-QCD Corrections to Associated Production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider
We calculate the SUSY-QCD corrections to the inclusive total cross sections
of the associated production processes in the Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model(MSSM) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider(LHC). The
SUSY-QCD corrections can increase and decrease the total cross sections
depending on the choice of the SUSY parameters. When the SUSY-QCD
corrections increase the leading-order (LO) total cross sections significantly
for large tan (), which can exceed 10% and have the opposite
sign with respect to the QCD and the SUSY-EW corrections, and thus cancel with
them to some extent. Moreover, we also investigate the effects of the SUSY-QCD
on the differential distribution of cross sections in transverse momentum
and rapidity Y of W-boson, and the invariant mass .Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures; minor changes in references; two figures and
