On smoothed analysis of quicksort and Hoare's find
We provide a smoothed analysis of Hoare's find algorithm, and we revisit the smoothed analysis of quicksort. Hoare's find algorithm - often called quickselect or one-sided quicksort - is an easy-to-implement algorithm for finding the k-th smallest element of a sequence. While the worst-case number of comparisons that Hoare’s find needs is Theta(n^2), the average-case number is Theta(n). We analyze what happens between these two extremes by providing a smoothed analysis. In the first perturbation model, an adversary specifies a sequence of n numbers of [0,1], and then, to each number of the sequence, we add a random number drawn independently from the interval [0,d]. We prove that Hoare's find needs Theta(n/(d+1) sqrt(n/d) + n) comparisons in expectation if the adversary may also specify the target element (even after seeing the perturbed sequence) and slightly fewer comparisons for finding the median. In the second perturbation model, each element is marked with a probability of p, and then a random permutation is applied to the marked elements. We prove that the expected number of comparisons to find the median is Omega((1−p)n/p log n). Finally, we provide lower bounds for the smoothed number of comparisons of quicksort and Hoare’s find for the median-of-three pivot rule, which usually yields faster algorithms than always selecting the first element: The pivot is the median of the first, middle, and last element of the sequence. We show that median-of-three does not yield a significant improvement over the classic rule
Preliminary remarks on Middle Persian ‹nc› in the Pahlavi documents
In the Pahlavi documents we find a sequence of characters that are commonly transliterated as ‹nc›, representing Middle Persian namāz ‘reverence.’ The vocalisation as namāz, a word most commonly found in the greeting formulae of letters, is not disputed. The question is rather whether these characters stand for a phonetic, albeit abbreviated, spelling of namāz or whether they constitute an abbreviation that developed out of the heterogram ‹‘SGDH›. In light of recent developments in the field and the rather sizeable evidence, I will revisit the arguments brought forward thus far and propose a new interpretation
The Cinderella Coach
This final report is the translation of chapter 1 – 4 of the book entitled The
Cinderella Coach) written by Roz Denny. The purposes are to improve skills on
translation, to apply and increase the knowledge about the methods, theories, and
process of translation, to increase the competence of English – Indonesian translation,
and to help the readers in understanding the content of book in Indonesian version.
Theoretically, this translation project can show the theories development about
translation such as the methods, process and result of translation, and it can be useful
for the additional information about the contents of the book so the writer and the
readers will increase their vocabularies in romance term. Practically, this final report
will be motivation for the students of English vocational program in writing the final
report, can help the other student translator to increase knowledge about strategy and
process of translation, and for the translation association as reference in the future.
The writer used the translation method from Newmark (1988:45) which were literal,
communicative, and free translation. However, the most translation method used are
free and communicative translation because of they refer to the context of Source
Language (SL). Also, the strategies of translation used by the writer are transposition,
addition and omission translation.

Quasiparticle thermal Hall angle and magnetoconductance in YBa_2Cu_3O_x
We present a way to extract the quasiparticle (qp) thermal conductivity
Kappa_e and mean-free-path in YBa_2Cu_3O_x, using the thermal Hall effect and
the magnetoconductance of Kappa_e. The results are very consistent with heat
capacity experiments. Moreover, we find a simple relation between the thermal
Hall angle Theta_Q and the H-dependence of Kappa_e, as well as numerical
equality between Theta_Q and the electrical Hall angle. The findings also
reveal an anomalously anisotropic scattering process in the normal state.Comment: 4 pages in Tex, 5 figures in EPS; replaced on 5/12/99, minor change
Thermal Conductivity Tensor in YBaCuO: Effects of a Planar Magnetic Field
We have measured the thermal conductivity tensor of a twinned
YBaCuO single crystal as a function of angle between
the magnetic field applied parallel to the CuO planes and the heat current
direction, at different magnetic fields and at T=13.8 K. Clear fourfold and
twofold variations in the field-angle dependence of and
were respectively recorded in accordance with the d-wave pairing
symmetry of the order parameter. The oscillation amplitude of the transverse
thermal conductivity was found to be larger than the
longitudinal one in the range of magnetic field studied here
(). From our data we obtain quantities that are free
from non-electronic contributions and they allow us a comparison of the
experimental results with current models for the quasiparticle transport in the
mixed state.Comment: 9 Figures, Phys. Rev. B(in press

Epicardial calcineurin-NFAT signals through Smad2 to direct coronary smooth muscle cell and arterial wall development
AIMS:
Congenital coronary artery anomalies produce serious events that include syncope, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, or sudden death. Studying the mechanism of coronary development will contribute to the understanding of the disease and help design new diagnostic or therapeutic strategies. Here, we characterized a new calcineurin-NFAT signalling which specifically functions in the epicardium to regulate the development of smooth muscle wall of the coronary arteries.
METHODS AND RESULTS:
Using tissue-specific gene deletion, we found that calcineurin-NFAT signals in the embryonic epicardium to direct coronary smooth muscle cell development. The smooth muscle wall of coronary arteries fails to mature in mice with epicardial deletion of calcineurin B1 (Cnb1), and accordingly these mutant mice develop cardiac dysfunction with reduced exercise capacity. Inhibition of calcineurin at various developmental windows shows that calcineurin-NFAT signals within a narrow time window at embryonic Day 12.5-13.5 to regulate coronary smooth muscle cell development. Within the epicardium, NFAT transcriptionally activates the expression of Smad2, whose gene product is critical for transducing transforming growth factor β (TGFβ)-Alk5 signalling to control coronary development.
CONCLUSION:
Our findings demonstrate new spatiotemporal and molecular actions of calcineurin-NFAT that dictate coronary arterial wall development and a new mechanism by which calcineurin-NFAT integrates with TGFβ signalling during embryonic development
