‘No memory, no desire’: psychoanalysis in Brazil during repressive times

Until recently, the growth and significance of Brazilian psychoanalysis has been neglected in histories of psychoanalysis. Not only is this history long and rich in its professional and cultural dimensions, but there was an especially important ‘event’ – the so-called ‘Cabernite-Lobo affair’ – that took place during the period of the military dictatorship, which can be seen as dramatising some of the issues concerning the erasure of memory in psychoanalysis, especially in connection with political difficulties. In this paper, we provide an outline of the origins and dissemination of psychoanalysis in Brazil before looking again at the Cabernite-Lobo affair in order to examine in a situated way how psychoanalysis engages with political extremism, and particularly to explore the consequences of an unthinking generalisation of the idea of ‘neutrality’ from the consulting room to the institutional setting. We draw especially on Brazilian papers in Portuguese, which have not been accessible in the English-language psychoanalytic literature

Arenas, arena architecture and the impact on location desirability: the case of `Olympic Arenas' in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin

This paper investigates impacts of three multifunctional sports arenas situated in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, Germany, employing highly disaggregated data on land values. The three arenas, their architecture and location within the city were explicitly designed to contribute to revitalisation of their economically deprived neighbourhoods. A difference-in-differences approach is employed to check for structural breaks in development of land values within areas of potential impact. The results suggest that arenas emanate positive externalities that improve location desirability in their neighbourhoods. However, evidence also supports concerns that the negative external effects of arenas may adversely affect neighbourhoods, when not addressed appropriately during planning

Design of online spheroidization process for 1.0C-1.5Cr bearing steel and microstructure analysis

Using thermo-mechanical control process, the online spheroidization annealing process of 1.0C-1.5Cr bearing steel was designed. Apart from intercritical online spheroidization (IS), a novel subcritical online spheroidization (SS) process was proposed, which is characterized by water-cooling to around 773 K (500 A degrees C) after the final rolling pass, and then directly reheating to 973 K (700 A degrees C) for isothermal holding. Compared with the results from the traditional offline spheroidization (TS) process, the size of spheroidized carbides is similar in both the TS and IS processes, whereas it is much smaller in the SS process. After spheroidization annealing, microstructure evolution during austenitization and quenching treatment was examined. It is shown that the refining of spheroidized carbides accelerates the dissolution of carbides during the austenitizing process, and decreases the size of undissolved carbides. In addition, the SS process can obtain finer prior austenite grain after quenching, which contributes to the enhancement of final hardness.
