Detection of ultra-high resonance contrast in vapor cell atomic clocks
We propose and demonstrate a novel detection scheme of clock signals and
obtain an ultra-high resonance contrast above 90%. The precision of the
signal's detection and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of atomic clock signal
is improved remarkably. The frequency stability in terms of Allan deviation has
been improved by an order for the new detection under the equivalent
conditions. We also investigate density effect which produces the splitting of
the transmission peak and consequently a narrower linewidth of Ramsey fringes.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Study on the Effect of Regional Water Pollution—Take Huaxi River in Chongqing as an Example
Water pollution management plays a crucial role in China’s ecological environment development. It has evolved from being solely the responsibility of the government to a collaborative effort involving multiple entities. This paper presents findings from a field survey conducted around the collaborative capacity and effectiveness of wastewater treatment in Huaxi River, Chongqing. The study collected 427 valid questionnaires and employed SPSS26.0 software and AMOS24.0 software, utilizing structural equation modelling and regression analysis to verify the relationship between the variables. The results highlight that synergy mechanism acts as a mediating variable between synergy capability and synergy governance effect, underscoring the role of mechanism in the relationship between capability and governance effect. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of enhancing synergistic capacity and synergistic mechanism to effectively promote synergistic governance effect in the water pollution management of Huaxi River in Chongqing. This can be achieved by improving the abilities of multiple stakeholders in managing water pollution, enhancing cooperation among parties, and encouraging participation of social organizations, the public, and enterprises in the management process to achieve sustainable development of ecological civilization
Isolation and Characterization of Clinical Listeria monocytogenes in Beijing, China, 2014–2016
Listeria monocytogenes is an important foodborne pathogen with a significant impact on public health worldwide. A great number of outbreaks caused by L. monocytogenes has been reported, especially in the United States, and European countries. However, listeriosis has not yet been included in notifiable disease in China, and thus information on this infection has been scarce among the Chinese population. In this study, we described a 3-year surveillance of listeriosis in Beijing, China. Fifty-six L. monocytogenes strains isolated from 49 clinical infectious cases (27 pregnancy-associated infections and 22 non-pregnancy-associated infections) were analyzed by serotyping, pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus sequence typing (MLST), and antimicrobial susceptibility testing between 2014 and 2016 in Beijing. The predominant serogroups were 1/2a,3a and 1/2b,3b,7 which accounted for 92% of the overall isolates. Four strains were serogroup 4b,4d,4e, isolated from patients with pregnancy-associated infections. Based on PFGE, these isolates were divided into 32 pulsotypes (PTs) and 3 clusters associated with serogroups. Ten PTs were represented by more than one isolate with PT09 containing the most number of isolates. MLST differentiated the isolates into 18 STs, without new ST designated. The three most common STs were ST8 (18.4%), ST5 (16.3%), and ST87 (12.2%), accounting for 46.9% of the isolates. STs prevalent in other parts of the world were also present in China such as ST1, ST2, ST5, ST8, and ST9 which caused maternal fetal infections or outbreaks. However, the STs and serogroup distribution of clinical L. monocytogenes in Beijing, China was different from those in other countries. Strains of ST1 and ST2 were isolated from patients with pregnancy-associated infection, whereas none of ST155 isolates caused pregnancy-associated cases. Surveillance of molecular characterization will provide important information for prevention of listeriosis. This study also enhances our understanding of genetic diversity of clinical L. monocytogenes in China
Hidden Sp(2s+1)- or SO(2s+1)-symmetry and new exactly solvable models in ultracold atomic systems
The high spin ultracold atom models with a special form of contact
interactions, i.e., the scattering lengthes in the total spin-
channels are equal but may be different from that in the spin-0 channel, is
studied. It is found that those models have either -symmetry for the
fermions or -symmetry for the bosons in the spin sector. Based on the
symmetry analysis, a new class of exactly solvable models is proposed and
solved via the Bethe ansatz. The ground states for repulsive fermions are also

Identifying differentially expressed genes in goat mammary epithelial cells induced by overexpression of SOCS3 gene using RNA sequencing
The suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) is a key signaling molecule that regulates milk synthesis in dairy livestock. However, the molecular mechanism by which SOCS3 regulates lipid synthesis in goat milk remains unclear. This study aimed to screen for key downstream genes associated with lipid synthesis regulated by SOCS3 in goat mammary epithelial cells (GMECs) using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). Goat SOCS3 overexpression vector (PC-SOCS3) and negative control (PCDNA3.1) were transfected into GMECs. Total RNA from cells after SOCS3 overexpression was used for RNA-seq, followed by differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis, functional enrichment analysis, and network prediction. SOCS3 overexpression significantly inhibited the synthesis of triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, non-esterified fatty acids, and accumulated lipid droplets. In total, 430 DEGs were identified, including 226 downregulated and 204 upregulated genes, following SOCS3 overexpression. Functional annotation revealed that the DEGs were mainly associated with lipid metabolism, cell proliferation, and apoptosis. We found that the lipid synthesis-related genes, STAT2 and FOXO6, were downregulated. In addition, the proliferation-related genes BCL2, MMP11, and MMP13 were upregulated, and the apoptosis-related gene CD40 was downregulated. In conclusion, six DEGs were identified as key regulators of milk lipid synthesis following SOCS3 overexpression in GMECs. Our results provide new candidate genes and insights into the molecular mechanisms involved in milk lipid synthesis regulated by SOCS3 in goats
Virtual histological staining of unlabeled autopsy tissue
Histological examination is a crucial step in an autopsy; however, the
traditional histochemical staining of post-mortem samples faces multiple
challenges, including the inferior staining quality due to autolysis caused by
delayed fixation of cadaver tissue, as well as the resource-intensive nature of
chemical staining procedures covering large tissue areas, which demand
substantial labor, cost, and time. These challenges can become more pronounced
during global health crises when the availability of histopathology services is
limited, resulting in further delays in tissue fixation and more severe
staining artifacts. Here, we report the first demonstration of virtual staining
of autopsy tissue and show that a trained neural network can rapidly transform
autofluorescence images of label-free autopsy tissue sections into brightfield
equivalent images that match hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained versions of
the same samples, eliminating autolysis-induced severe staining artifacts
inherent in traditional histochemical staining of autopsied tissue. Our virtual
H&E model was trained using >0.7 TB of image data and a data-efficient
collaboration scheme that integrates the virtual staining network with an image
registration network. The trained model effectively accentuated nuclear,
cytoplasmic and extracellular features in new autopsy tissue samples that
experienced severe autolysis, such as COVID-19 samples never seen before, where
the traditional histochemical staining failed to provide consistent staining
quality. This virtual autopsy staining technique can also be extended to
necrotic tissue, and can rapidly and cost-effectively generate artifact-free
H&E stains despite severe autolysis and cell death, also reducing labor, cost
and infrastructure requirements associated with the standard histochemical

Lower gestational age is associated with lower cortical volume and cognitive and educational performance in adolescence
Background: Gestational age (GA) is associated with later cognition and behavior. However, it is unclear how specific cognitive domains and brain structural development varies with the stepwise change of gestational duration. Methods: This large-scale longitudinal cohort study analyzed 11,878 early adolescents’ brain volume maps at 9–10 years (baseline) and 5685 at 11–12 years (a 2-year follow-up) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. According to gestational age, adolescents were divided into five categorical groups: ≤ 33 weeks, 34–35 weeks, 36 weeks, 37–39 weeks, and ≥ 40 weeks. The NIH Toolbox was used to estimate neurocognitive performance, including crystallized and fluid intelligence, which was measured for 11,878 adolescents at baseline with crystallized intelligence and relevant subscales obtained at 2-year follow-up (with participant numbers ranging from 6185 to 6310 depending on the cognitive domain). An additional large population-based cohort of 618,070 middle adolescents at ninth-grade (15–16 years) from the Danish national register was utilized to validate the association between gestational age and academic achievements. A linear mixed model was used to examine the group differences between gestational age and neurocognitive performance, school achievements, and grey matter volume. A mediation analysis was performed to examine whether brain structural volumes mediated the association between GA and neurocognition, followed with a longitudinal analysis to track the changes. Results: Significant group differences were found in all neurocognitive scores, school achievements, and twenty-five cortical regional volumes (P < 0.05, Bonferroni corrected). Specifically, lower gestational ages were associated with graded lower cognition and school achievements and with smaller brain volumes of the fronto-parieto-temporal, fusiform, cingulate, insula, postcentral, hippocampal, thalamic, and pallidal regions. These lower brain volumes mediated the association between gestational age and cognitive function (P = 1 × 10−8, β = 0.017, 95% CI: 0.007–0.028). Longitudinal analysis showed that compared to full term adolescents, preterm adolescents still had smaller brain volumes and crystallized intelligence scores at 11–12 years. Conclusions: These results emphasize the relationships between gestational age at birth and adolescents’ lower brain volume, and lower cognitive and educational performance, measured many years later when 9–10 and 11–12 years old. The study indicates the importance of early screening and close follow-up for neurocognitive and behavioral development for children and adolescents born with gestational ages that are even a little lower than full term
Hearing impairment is associated with cognitive decline, brain atrophy and tau pathology.
Hearing impairment was recently identified as the most prominent risk factor for dementia. However, the mechanisms underlying the link between hearing impairment and dementia are still unclear. We investigated the association of hearing performance with cognitive function, brain structure and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins in cross-sectional, longitudinal, mediation and genetic association analyses across the UK Biobank (N = 165,550), the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and Lifestyle (CABLE, N = 863) study, and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI, N = 1770) database. Poor hearing performance was associated with worse cognitive function in the UK Biobank and in the CABLE study. Hearing impairment was significantly related to lower volume of temporal cortex, hippocampus, inferior parietal lobe, precuneus, etc., and to lower integrity of white matter (WM) tracts. Furthermore, a higher polygenic risk score (PRS) for hearing impairment was strongly associated with lower cognitive function, lower volume of gray matter, and lower integrity of WM tracts. Moreover, hearing impairment was correlated with a high level of CSF tau protein in the CABLE study and in the ADNI database. Finally, mediation analyses showed that brain atrophy and tau pathology partly mediated the association between hearing impairment and cognitive decline. Hearing impairment is associated with cognitive decline, brain atrophy and tau pathology, and hearing impairment may reflect the risk for cognitive decline and dementia as it is related to bran atrophy and tau accumulation in brain. Stigmatizing attitudes toward mental illness among caregivers of patients with mental disorders in China
ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate stigmatizing attitudes toward depression, schizophrenia, and general anxiety disorder (GAD) among caregivers of patients with mental disorders in China.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 607 caregivers in China, using vignettes that described three mental illnesses. Data on the caregivers’ attitudes and other people’s attitudes toward individuals with mental disorders and their willingness to come in contact with people with mental disorders were collected.ResultsIn the three vignettes, caregivers agreed that positive outcomes outnumbered negative outcomes. The top two statements endorsing the stigma were “the person could snap out of the problem” and “people with this problem are dangerous.” In the section for perceived stigma, caregivers in the GAD vignette agreed that most people believed this problem is not a real medical illness, compared to schizophrenia. The rates of the statement endorsing unpredictability were significantly different in the schizophrenia (57.2%) and depression (45.5%) vignette, in comparison to the GAD (45.6%) vignette. For personal stigma, the caregivers tended to avoid people described in the depression vignette more often than in the GAD vignette. The caregivers were most unwilling to let the person described in the vignettes marry into their family, especially in the schizophrenia vignette.ConclusionDespite the stigma and desire for social distance associated with schizophrenia, depression, and GAD, caregivers often expect positive outcomes.
