Evaluative Experiments of a Fellow Passenger Robot Using a Driving Simulator

    Get PDF
We studied how a fellow passenger robot influences drivers. The fellow passenger robot was designed to move and speak as if it knows the surroundings of the car. We conducted experiments with a driving simulator and evaluated the effectiveness of the robot with various methods. We used questionnaires to ask for impressions of the driving experience for the participants after the driving experiments with the fellow passenger robot. In addition, the car speed, acceleration and steering angle were measured during the driving experiments. Some significant differences between experiences with and without robot were found in the results with regard to impression evaluation and average speed. Therefore, we found that the robot makes driving more enjoyable and that drivers drive slower than without the robot.ArticleINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ADVANCED ROBOTIC SYSTEMS. 10:95 (2013)journal articl

Model compilation: An approach to automated model derivation

    Get PDF
An approach is introduced to automated model derivation for knowledge based systems. The approach, model compilation, involves procedurally generating the set of domain models used by a knowledge based system. With an implemented example, how this approach can be used to derive models of different precision and abstraction is illustrated, and models are tailored to different tasks, from a given set of base domain models. In particular, two implemented model compilers are described, each of which takes as input a base model that describes the structure and behavior of a simple electromechanical device, the Reaction Wheel Assembly of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. The compilers transform this relatively general base model into simple task specific models for troubleshooting and redesign, respectively, by applying a sequence of model transformations. Each transformation in this sequence produces an increasingly more specialized model. The compilation approach lessens the burden of updating and maintaining consistency among models by enabling their automatic regeneration

Modeling and computation of an integral operator Riccati equation for an infinite-dimensional stochastic differential equation governing streamflow discharge

We propose a linear-quadratic (LQ) control problem of streamflow discharge by optimizing an infinite-dimensional jump-driven stochastic differential equation (SDE). Our SDE is a superposition of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes (supOU process), generating a sub-exponential autocorrelation function observed in actual data. The integral operator Riccati equation is heuristically derived to determine the optimal control of the infinite-dimensional system. In addition, its finite-dimensional version is derived with a discretized distribution of the reversion speed and computed by a finite difference scheme. The optimality of the Riccati equation is analyzed by a verification argument. The supOU process is parameterized based on the actual data of a perennial river. The convergence of the numerical scheme is analyzed through computational experiments. Finally, we demonstrate the application of the proposed model to realistic problems along with the Kolmogorov backward equation for the performance evaluation of controls

Development of bed-building behaviors in captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes): Implication for critical period hypothesis and captive management

Wild great apes build beds for sleeping by combining tree branches or other vegetation, but the development of this behavior is poorly understood. We investigated the development of bed-building behaviors by conducting complementary cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of captive chimpanzees. In the cross-sectional study, we created an ethogram of behaviors related to bed-building by observing 59 chimpanzees living at the Kumamoto Sanctuary, Kyoto University, and the Kyoto City Zoo. In the longitudinal study, we installed bed-building platforms, provided branches on the platforms on a regular basis, and recorded behaviors of five chimpanzees (including an infant born in 2013) over a 3-year period from February 2015 to February 2018 at the Kyoto City Zoo (total 490.7 h). We found that all the chimpanzees performed some form of bed-building behavior but wild-born chimpanzees possessed more sophisticated techniques than captive-born chimpanzees. We also found that although the offspring of a wild-born female only showed simple techniques at the beginning of the longitudinal study, his repertoire of bed-building behaviors became as complex as that of his mother by the age of five. Our results suggest that improved bed-building behaviors can be supported in captive-born great apes by providing learning opportunities during appropriate stages of development
