China's Economic Reforms: Chronology and Statistics

    Get PDF
At the end of the twentieth century, the People's Republic of China faces stark trade policy choices. Market reforms implemented since 1978 have brought commercial strength and bright expectations for future prosperity. However, they have also brought China to the point where trading partners insist on commitments to liberal, internationally recognized trading principles. These calls come at a time when China is seeking to enter the World Trade Organization (WTO), is negotiating bilateral trade agreements with Europe, United States and its emerging neighbors, and is working out the terms of its participation in the ambitious Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

Solvent Extraction of DNA with a Hydrolysable Double-chain Surfactant

A cationic lipophilic surfactant with two hydrolysable groups, di(1-octadecyloxycarbonylmethyl)dimethylammonium chloride, was synthesized and solvent extraction of deoxyribonucleotide (DNA) into organic solution (isooctane/1-octanol) with it as an extractant was examined. Not only a forward extraction of DNA into the organic phase but also back extraction into the aqueous phase (pH9) at room temperature proceeded efficiently. The forward extraction is promoted by electrostatic interactions of the surfactant and DNA and the back extraction is exclusively caused by hydrolysis of the surfactant to a non-surfactant.ArticleSEPARATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. 44(2):466-475 (2009)journal articl

High-Voltage Methods for Mushroom Fruit-Body Developments

    Get PDF
High-voltage electrical stimulation is effective for promotion of fruit-body development in mushroom cultivation. The high voltage applying to cultivation bed of mushroom generates intense electric field inside the bed substrate. The intense electric field accelerates the hypha move owing to the electrostatic force. As a result, some parts of hyphae are cut and scratched. The cutting and scratching of hypha work as stimulation for promotion of the fruit-body development. The promotion effect of high-voltage stimulation to sawdust-based substrate of L. and natural logs hosting Lentinula edodes, Pholiota microspora and Hypholoma lateritium are confirmed through the experiment in the cultivation field. The fruit-body formation of mushrooms increases 1.3–2.0 times in terms of the total weight. The accumulated yield of L. edodes for four cultivation seasons is improved from 160 to 320 g by applying high voltage of 50 or 100 kV. However, the yield decreases from 320 to 240 g upon increasing applied voltage from 100 to 130 kV. The yield of the other types of mushrooms shows tendencies similar to those of L. edodes by applying high voltage. An optimal voltage exists for efficient fruiting body induction

Homological mirror symmetry for the quintic 3-fold

We prove homological mirror symmetry for the quintic Calabi-Yau 3-fold. The proof follows that for the quartic surface by Seidel (arXiv:math/0310414) closely, and uses a result of Sheridan (arXiv:1012.3238). In contrast to Sheridan's approach (arXiv:1111.0632), our proof gives the compatibility of homological mirror symmetry for the projective space and its Calabi-Yau hypersurface.Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures. v2: revised following the suggestions of the referee

Widely Extended [OIII] 88 um Line Emission around the 30 Doradus Region Revealed with AKARI FIS-FTS

We present the distribution map of the far-infrared [OIII] 88um line emission around the 30 Doradus (30 Dor) region in the Large Magellanic Cloud obtained with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer of the Far-Infrared Surveyor onboard AKARI. The map reveals that the [OIII] emission is widely distributed by more than 10' around the super star cluster R136, implying that the 30 Dor region is affluent with interstellar radiation field hard enough to ionize O^{2+}. The observed [OIII] line intensities are as high as (1-2) x 10^{-6} W m^{-2} sr^{-1} on the peripheral regions 4'-5' away from the center of 30 Dor, which requires gas densities of 60-100 cm^{-3}. However the observed size of the distribution of the [OIII] emission is too large to be explained by massive stars in the 30 Dor region enshrouded by clouds with the constant gas density of 10^2 cm^{-3}. Therefore the surrounding structure is likely to be highly clumpy. We also find a global correlation between the [OIII] and the far-infrared continuum emission, suggesting that the gas and dust are well mixed in the highly-ionized region where the dust survives in clumpy dense clouds shielded from the energetic photons.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan (PASJ

Silkworm larvae (Bombyx mori) can learn cues associated with finding food

    Get PDF
The present study investigated the ability of silkworm Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) larvae to learn. Silkworm larvae were trained to consume food that was placed on red paper; consequently they became attracted to red, rather than blue paper even in the absence of food. In contrast, untrained controls had no preference for either red or blue paper. These results suggested that silkworm larvae learned to associate red paper with food, and that they can discriminate colors. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.560946

Easy-to-Use InDel Markers for Genetic Mapping between Col-0 and Ler-0 Accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana

    Get PDF
Map-based gene cloning has played a key role in many genetic studies using the model plant,Arabidopsis thaliana. In the post-next generation sequencing era, identification of point mutations and their corresponding genes is increasingly becoming a powerful and important approach to define plant gene function. To perform initial mapping experiments efficiently on Arabidopsis mutants, enrichment of easy-to-use and reliable polymorphic DNA markers would be desirable. We present here a list of InDel polymorphic markers between Col-0 and Ler-0 accessions that can be detected in standard agarose gel electrophoresis

High-temperature thermoelectric properties of the double-perovskite ruthenium oxide (Sr1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)2_2ErRuO6_6

We have prepared polycrystalline samples of (Sr1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)2_2ErRuO6_6 and (Sr1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)2_2YRuO6_6, and have measured the resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, susceptibility and x-ray absorption in order to evaluate the electronic states and thermoelectric properties of the doped double-perovskite ruthenates. We have observed a large Seebeck coefficient of -160 μ\muV/K and a low thermal conductivity of 7 mW/cmK for xx=0.1 at 800 K in air. These two values are suitable for efficient oxide thermoelectrics, although the resistivity is still as high as 1 Ω\Omegacm. From the susceptibility and x-ray absorption measurements, we find that the doped electrons exist as Ru4+^{4+} in the low spin state. On the basis of the measured results, the electronic states and the conduction mechanism are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, J. Appl. Phys. (accepted
