The surface topography of opened-up microtubule walls (sheets) decorated with monomeric and dimeric kinesin motor domains was investigated by freeze-drying and unidirectional metal shadowing. Electron microscopy of surface-shadowed specimens produces images with a high signal/noise ratio, which enable a direct observation of surface features below 2 nm detail. Here we investigate the inner and outer surface of microtubules and tubulin sheets with and without decoration by kinesin motor domains. Tubulin sheets are flattened walls of microtubules, keeping lateral protofilament contacts intact. Surface shadowing reveals the following features: (i) when the microtubule outside is exposed the surface relief is dominated by the bound motor domains. Monomeric motor constructs generate a strong 8 nm periodicity, corresponding to the binding of one motor domain per beta -tubulin heterodimer. This surface periodicity largely disappears when dimeric kinesin motor domains are used for decoration, even though it is still visible in negatively stained or frozen hydrated specimens, This could be explained by disorder in the binding of the second (loosely tethered) kinesin head, and/or disorder in the coiled-coil tail. (ii) Both surfaces of undecorated sheets or microtubules, as well as the inner surface of decorated sheets, reveal a strong 4 nm repeat (due to the periodicity of tubulin monomers) and a weak 8 nm repeat (due to slight differences between alpha- and beta -tubulin). The differences between alpha- and beta -tubulin on the inner surface are stronger than expected from cryo-electron microscopy of unstained microtubules, indicating the existence of tubulin subdomain-specific surface properties that reflect the surface corrugation and hence metal deposition during evaporation. The 16 nm periodicity visible in some negatively stained specimens (caused by the pairing of cooperatively bound kinesin dimers) is not detected by surface shadowing

DS-ARP: A New Detection Scheme for ARP Spoofing Attacks Based on Routing Trace for Ubiquitous Environments

    Get PDF
Despite the convenience, ubiquitous computing suffers from many threats and security risks. Security considerations in the ubiquitous network are required to create enriched and more secure ubiquitous environments. The address resolution protocol (ARP) is a protocol used to identify the IP address and the physical address of the associated network card. ARP is designed to work without problems in general environments. However, since it does not include security measures against malicious attacks, in its design, an attacker can impersonate another host using ARP spoofing or access important information. In this paper, we propose a new detection scheme for ARP spoofing attacks using a routing trace, which can be used to protect the internal network. Tracing routing can find the change of network movement path. The proposed scheme provides high constancy and compatibility because it does not alter the ARP protocol. In addition, it is simple and stable, as it does not use a complex algorithm or impose extra load on the computer system

Cross-Modal Interaction Networks for Query-Based Moment Retrieval in Videos

Query-based moment retrieval aims to localize the most relevant moment in an untrimmed video according to the given natural language query. Existing works often only focus on one aspect of this emerging task, such as the query representation learning, video context modeling or multi-modal fusion, thus fail to develop a comprehensive system for further performance improvement. In this paper, we introduce a novel Cross-Modal Interaction Network (CMIN) to consider multiple crucial factors for this challenging task, including (1) the syntactic structure of natural language queries; (2) long-range semantic dependencies in video context and (3) the sufficient cross-modal interaction. Specifically, we devise a syntactic GCN to leverage the syntactic structure of queries for fine-grained representation learning, propose a multi-head self-attention to capture long-range semantic dependencies from video context, and next employ a multi-stage cross-modal interaction to explore the potential relations of video and query contents. The extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.Comment: Accepted by SIGIR 2019 as a full pape

    ReFine: Re-randomization before Fine-tuning for Cross-domain Few-shot Learning

Cross-domain few-shot learning (CD-FSL), where there are few target samples under extreme differences between source and target domains, has recently attracted huge attention. Recent studies on CD-FSL generally focus on transfer learning based approaches, where a neural network is pre-trained on popular labeled source domain datasets and then transferred to target domain data. Although the labeled datasets may provide suitable initial parameters for the target data, the domain difference between the source and target might hinder fine-tuning on the target domain. This paper proposes a simple yet powerful method that re-randomizes the parameters fitted on the source domain before adapting to the target data. The re-randomization resets source-specific parameters of the source pre-trained model and thus facilitates fine-tuning on the target domain, improving few-shot performance.Comment: CIKM 2022 Short; 5 pages, 3 figures, 4 table

THERMAL HYDRAULIC ISSUES OF CONTAINMENT FILTERED VENTING SYSTEM FOR A LONG OPERATING TIME

This study investigated the thermal hydraulic issues in the Containment Filtered Venting System (CFVS) for a long operating time using the MELCOR computer code. The modeling of the CFVS, including the models for pool scrubbing and the filter, was added to the input file for the OPR-1000, and a Station Blackout (SBO) was chosen as an accident scenario. Although depressurization in the containment building as a primary objective of the CFVS was successful, the decontamination feature by scrubbing and filtering in the CFVS for a long operating time could fail by the continuous evaporation of the scrubbing solution. After the operation of the CFVS, the atmosphere temperature in the CFVS became slightly above the water saturation temperature owing to the release of an amount of steam with high temperature from the containment building to the scrubbing solution. Reduced pipe diameters at the inlet and outlet of the CFVS vessel mitigated the evaporation of scrubbing water by controlling the amount of high-temperature steam and the water saturation temperature

A Photometric and Spectroscopic Study of the Short-Period Algol EW Bo\"{o}tis with a δ\delta Sct Pulsator

In this paper, we present TESS photometry and high-resolution spectra of the short-period Algol EW Boo. We obtained double-lined radial velocities (RVs) from the time-series spectra and measured the effective temperature of the primary star as Teff,1T_{\rm{eff,1}} = 8560 ±\pm 118 K. For the orbital period study, we collected all times of minima available for over the last 30 years. It was found that the eclipse timing variation of the system could be represented by a periodic oscillation of 17.6 ±\pm 0.3 years with a semi-amplitude of 0.0041 ±\pm 0.0001 d. The orbital and physical parameters were derived by simultaneously analyzing the TESS light and RV curves using the Wilson-Devinney (WD) binary star modeling code. The component masses and radii were showed over 3% precision: M1M_{1} = 2.67 ±\pm 0.08 M⊙_{\odot}, M2M_{2} = 0.43 ±\pm 0.01 M⊙_{\odot}, R1R_{1} = 2.01 ±\pm 0.02 R⊙_{\odot}, and R2R_{2} = 1.35 ±\pm 0.01 R⊙_{\odot}. Furthermore, multiple frequency analyses were performed for the light-curve residuals from the WD model. As a result, we detected 17 pressure-mode pulsations in the region of 40.15 - 52.37 d−1^{-1}. The absolute dimensions and pulsation characteristics showed that the δ\delta Sct pulsator was the more massive and hotter primary star of the EW Boo.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in A

Factors controlling the distribution of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen in the coastal waters off Jeju Island

    Get PDF
The composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the coastal waters off Jeju Island, Korea, originates from a complex mixture of organic sources. This study examined the dynamics and sources of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in the coastal waters off Jeju Island. Seasonal variation in the DOC and DON concentrations was observed, with significantly higher levels during summer (DOC: 82 ± 15 µM and DON: 6.8 ± 2.0 µM) than during the other seasons. In 2017, the Kuroshio Intermediate Water had a greater impact on the coastal waters off Jeju Island during winter (79%) and spring (69%) than during the other seasons, while the Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) (12%) and the Kuroshio Surface Water (47%) had a stronger impact during summer and the Yellow Sea Cold Water (10%) had a stronger impact during autumn. Although water mass analysis provides valuable insights, certain aspects of the DOM distribution in coastal seawater remain unexplained. During summer, while the mixing of the CDW influenced the concentrations of DOC and DON, a distinct pulse in these concentrations was observed within a specific salinity range, suggesting microbial activity as a source. The relationship between dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and salinity also exhibited the opposite trend to that between DON and salinity, indicating the conversion of DON into DIN through microbial activity. These findings suggest that microbial activity plays a key role in the observed DOM pulse, transforming particulate organic matter into DOM and then converting it into DIN during the long transportation from Changjiang River to Jeju Island. This organic matter cycle could thus serve as a source of DIN in oligotrophic regions. However, further research on the sources and distribution of organic matter using biogeochemical parameters is required to gain a better understanding of the intricate processes involved
