    Zitrone

The purpose of this thesis paper is to describe the elements and narrative associated with the exhibition, Zitrone, as well as the conceptual and theoretical ideas influencing the work. The exhibition is centered around an invented singular historical object in the form of a vehicle, and a museum display of artifacts, documents, and recreations intended to validate the existence of the central subject. Drawing on the work of artists Marcel Broodthaers, Damien Hirst, and David Wilson in conjunction with theoretical writings of Dave Hickey and Lewis Hyde, the exhibition seeks to address the perception and presentation of history as absolute truth versus subjective interpretation of events. Using the methods and tropes of display associated with the museum and the archiving and dissemination of truth, the project provokes thought into both the possibility or impossibility of historical accuracy and the accountability of the museum in that discourse

Impact of lunar oxygen production on direct manned Mars missions

    Get PDF
A manned Mars program made up of six missions is evaluated to determine the impact of using lunar liquid oxygen (LOX) as a propellant. Two departure and return nodes, low Earth orbit and low lunar orbit, are considered, as well as two return vehicle configurations, a full 70,000-kg vehicle and a 6800-kg capsule. The cost of lunar LOX delivered to orbit is expressed as a ratio of Earth launch cost

Solar Sails : Technology and demonstration status

Solar Sail propulsion has been validated in space (IKAROS, 2012) and soon several more solar-sail propelled spacecraft will be flown. Using sunlight for spacecraft propulsion is not a new idea. First proposed by Frederick Tsander and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in the 1920's, NASA's Echo 1 balloon, launched in 1960, was the first spacecraft for which the effects of solar photon pressure were measured. Solar sails reflect sunlight to achieve thrust, thus eliminating the need for costly and often very-heavy fuel. Such "propellantless" propulsion will enable whole new classes of space science and exploration missions previously not considered possible due to the propulsive-intense maneouvers and operations required

Curriculum, Identity, and Experience in Multicultural Teacher Education

This article reports on the initial stages of an ongoing action research project in multicultural teacher education. Operating from a view of curriculum as the creation of culturally significant domains for conversation based on principles of quality, quantity, relatedness, and manner, the project inquired into how a secondary English methods course centered on issues of cultural diversity and emerging professional identities was taken up by a cadre of predominantly white, middle-class students. The concluding discussion highlights the complexities of a social reconstructionist approach to multicultural teacher education in the absence of extending this focus across programs, coursework, and student teaching placements.
