    Reusable, polyethylene glycol-structured microfluidic channel for particle immunoassays

    A microfluidic channel made entirely out of polyethylene glycol (PEG), not PEG coating to silicon or polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface, was fabricated and tested for its reusability in particle immunoassays and passive protein fouling, at relatively high target concentrations (1 mg ml-1). The PEG devices were reusable up to ten times while the oxygen-plasma-treated polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) device could be reused up to four times and plain PDMS were not reusable. Liquid was delivered spontaneously via capillary action and complicated bonding procedure was not necessary. The contact angle analysis revealed that the water contact angle on microchannel surface should be lower than ~60ยฐ, which are comparable to those on dried protein films, to be reusable for particle immunoassays and passive protein fouling

    Calcium Uptake and Release through Sarcoplasmic Reticulum in the Inferior Oblique Muscles of Patients with Inferior Oblique Overaction

    We characterized and compared the characteristics of Ca2+ movements through the sarcoplasmic reticulum of inferior oblique muscles in the various conditions including primary inferior oblique overaction (IOOA), secondary IOOA, and controls, so as to further understand the pathogenesis of primary IOOA. Of 15 specimens obtained through inferior oblique myectomy, six were from primary IOOA, 6 from secondary IOOA, and the remaining 3 were controls from enucleated eyes. Ryanodine binding assays were performed, and Ca2+ uptake rates, calsequestrins and SERCA levels were determined. Ryanodine bindings and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ uptake rates were significantly decreased in primary IOOA (p<0.05). Western blot analysis conducted to quantify calsequestrins and SERCA, found no significant difference between primary IOOA, secondary IOOA, and the controls. Increased intracellular Ca2+ concentration due to reduced sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ uptake may play a role in primary IOOA

    Conservative Management of Spontaneous Isolated Dissection of the Superior Mesenteric Artery

    Purpose. We report the clinical outcomes of patients with spontaneous isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery (SIDSMA) who were treated conservatively. Materials and Methods. A retrospective review was performed in 14 patients from 2006 to 2016 with SIDSMA. Their clinical features and computed tomographic angiography (CTA) characteristics, treatment methods, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. The mean age was 53.6 (range, 41โ€“73) years, and the mean follow-up duration was 20.6 (range, 1โ€“54) months. Conservative management was the primary treatment if no bowel ischemia or arterial rupture was noted. Results. The mean initial abdominal visual analog pain score was 7 (range, 5โ€“9) in seven patients. The mean total duration of abdominal pain was 10.2 days (range, 2โ€“42 days) in 10 patients. The mean percentage stenosis of the dissected SMA at the initial presentation was 78.8% in 14 patients. Complete obstruction of the SMA at the initial presentation was evident in 4 of the 14 patients (28.6%). Conservative management was successful in all 14 patients. None of the 14 patients developed bowel ischemia or an infarction. Abdominal pain did not recur in any patient during follow-up (mean, 20.6 months; range, 1โ€“54 months). Conclusion. Conservative management was successful for all SIDSMA patients, even those with severe compression of the true lumen or complete obstruction of the dissected SMA

    Full Tendon Transposition Augmented with Posterior Intermuscular Suture and Recession - Resection Surgery

    Purpose: To report an effect of the full tendon transposition augmented with posterior intermuscular suture and recession-resection surgery, for the patient with monocular elevation deficiency (MED) and large exotropia. Methods: Interventional case report. Full tendon transposition augmented with posterior intermuscular suture and recession-resection surgery was performed for a 26-year-old male patient had monocular elevation deficiency (MED) and large exotropia. Results: Preoperative angle of deviation was 56 prism diopters (PD) hypotropia and 45 PD right exotropia, compared with 18 PD left hypertropia and 10 PD right esotropia postoperatively. Essotropia persisted after 2.5 years, however, and so the right medial rectus was recessed after removal of the previous posterior intermuscular suture. At a three-year follow-up after the second surgery, alignment was straight in the primary position at near and far distances. Conclusions: Full tendon transposition augmented with posterior intermuscular suture and recession-resection surgery was effective for a patient with MED associated with significant horizontal deviation, and a second operation was easily performed when overcorrection occurred.ope

    Optimal Detection Range of RFID Tag for RFID-based Positioning System Using the k-NN Algorithm

    Positioning technology to track a moving object is an important and essential component of ubiquitous computing environments and applications. An RFID-based positioning system using the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) algorithm can determine the position of a moving reader from observed reference data. In this study, the optimal detection range of an RFID-based positioning system was determined on the principle that tag spacing can be derived from the detection range. It was assumed that reference tags without signal strength information are regularly distributed in 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional spaces. The optimal detection range was determined, through analytical and numerical approaches, to be 125% of the tag-spacing distance in 1-dimensional space. Through numerical approaches, the range was 134% in 2-dimensional space, 143% in 3-dimensional space

    Development of carbon-based adsorbent for separation of impurities such as siloxane and ammonia from land-fill gas

    Land-fill gas or bio-gas is composed of large portion of methane and carbon dioxide, and small amount of impurities such as nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, siloxane and ammonia. These gases can be used as a gas-fuel after upgrading treatment. For the application of the land-fill gas and bio-gas as a fuel, we developed highly-performing carbon-based adsorbent which can separate siloxane and ammonia residue from these gases. It was quite necessary to consider the chemical properties of siloxane and ammonia for development of suitable adsorbent of each component. The siloxane can be polymerized in acidic or basic condition to form bulkier species which causes adsorbent deactivation and difficult regeneration. The ammonia gas is well known as basic molecules which have strong affinity to acidic species. In these reasons, we prepared neutral carbon materials by various methods for siloxane adsorption. In addition, we developed carbon-based basic ammonia-adsorbent by simple methods such as the chemical treatment of commercial activated carbon or the impregnation of organic molecules into the activated carbon. And then, adsorption-desorption isotherms and breakthrough curve of siloxane and ammonia were measured for thus synthesized adsorbents. Detail results for synthesis and the adsorption measurement of the studied adsorbents will be presented in the conference

    Mucinous cystadenoma of the liver with ovarian-like stroma: the need for complete resection

    Cystadenoma of the liver is a rare neoplasm. Although many cystadenomas are asymptomatic, symptoms can include abdominal pain, postprandial epigastric discomfort, and nausea. Dramatic changes in hepatic imaging techniques have been helpful for diagnosing cystic lesions of the liver, such as simple cyst, hydatid cyst, cystadenoma, cystadenocarcinoma, and metastatic neuroendocrine tumors. However, it remains difficult to differentiate cystadenoma from cystadenocarcinoma for multiseptated cystic hepatic lesions with papillary projection on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Here we report the case of a 47-year-old woman with several months of postprandial discomfort and abdominal fullness. CT and MRI revealed multiseptated cystic lesions with papillary excrescences. A left hemihepatectomy was performed. Histology showed a benign mucinous cystic tumor with ovarian-like stroma

    Intraoperative Adjustment in Strabismus Surgery under Topical Anesthesia

    We evaluated the one-stage intraoperative adjustment strabismus surgery with adjustable suture under topical anesthesia. Medical records of the patients who had intraoperative adjustment surgery under topical anesthesia for horizontal or vertical strabismus in our hospital from March 1997 to March 2003 with follow-up of 6 months were analyzed retrospectively. Of the 71 patients, 48 patients had exotropia, 16 had esotropia, and 7 had hyper- or hypotropia. The overall success rates were 85.9% at 1 week, 83% at 1 month, 78.9% at 3 months, and 76.1% at 6 months after surgery. The procedure was not stopped in any patients, and no serious intra-operative or postoperative complications were noted. Intraoperative adjustment strabismus surgery under topical anesthesia is a simple, well-tolerated and effective procedure
