This study aimed to study the differences in Raman spectra of red blood cells (RBCs) among patients with β-thalassemia and controls using laser tweezers Raman spectroscopy (LTRS) system.A total of 33 patients with β-thalassemia major, 49 with β-thalassemia minor, and 65 controls were studied. Raman spectra of RBCs for each sample were recorded. Principal component analysis (PCA), one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and independent-sample t test were performed. The intensities of Raman spectra of β-thalassemia (major and minor) RBCs were lower than those of controls, especially at bands 1546, 1603, and 1619 cm. The intensity ratio of band 1546 cm to band 1448 cm demonstrated that there was a significant difference between the spectra of β-thalassemia major (mostly below 2.15) and those of controls. The spectra of controls could be well distinguished from those of β-thalassemia major using PCA. After normalization, the spectra of two different genotypes with β/β mutations mainly overlapped, while those with β/β mutations had lower intensity at bands 1546, 1603, and 1619 cm.The present study provided Raman characteristics of RBCs in patients with β-thalassemia major and supported the use of LTRS as a method for screening β-thalassemia major. The recognition rate for β-thalassemia minor needs to be further improved

Purpose: To explore the biological functions and molecular mechanism of circZNF652 involvement in primary lung carcinoma. Methods: CircZNF652 levels in primary lung carcinoma cases and controls were determined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Its prognostic value in primary lung carcinoma was examined by depicting it with Kaplan-Meier curves. The biological functions of circZNF652 in regulating proliferative and migratory capacities in A549 and SPC-A-1 cells were analyzed from the curves. Interaction between circZNF652 and its downstream gene, miR-766, wasassessed, and their co-regulation on primary lung carcinoma was determined by rescue experiments. Results: CircZNF652 was abnormally and significantly upregulated in primary lung carcinoma cases (p< 0.05), resulting in a poor prognosis. The knockdown effect of circZNF652 attenuated the proliferative and migratory capacities of A549 and SPC-A-1 cells, and downregulated epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated genes. CircZNF652 bound and negatively regulated miR-766, a keydownstream gene involved in circZNF652-induced aggravation of primary lung carcinoma. Conclusion: CircZNF652 serves as an oncogene, triggering the aggravation of primary lung carcinoma by negatively regulating miR-766. The results of this study may provide new insights into the treatment of lung carcinoma

In order to enrich the car-following theory of urban signalized intersections, and reveal the car-following characteristics of left turn at signalized intersections, the car-following behavior of left turn at signalized intersections is studied. The car-following data acquisition test which was based on high precision GPS was designed. And the car-following characteristics of left-turning vehicles at signalized intersections with different turning radii were analyzed. Based on which, the influence of radius on the car-following behavior was explained, and the New Full Velocity Difference (NFVD) model was developed. The genetic algorithm was used to calibrate the parameters of the NFVD model. The stability and accuracy of the calibrated model was further analyzed by using field data. The results showed that the average speed of the following car increases with the turning radius of the signalized intersection; the car-following speed which the highest frequency occurs under different turning radii tends to increase with the enlargement of turning radius; the larger the average headway distance between the car-following vehicles, the more intense of the driver’s response to the deceleration of the front vehicle. These findings could be used in traffic simulation and to make engineering decisions

Application of BEMD in Extraction of Regional and Local Gravity Anomalies Reflecting Geological Structures Associated with Mineral Resources

The bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition (BEMD) method is an adaptive analysis method for nonlinear and nonstationary data. With the sifting process of BEMD, the data can be decomposed into a series of bi-dimensional intrinsic mode functions (BIMFs), which may present the relative local feature of the data. In this study, the BEMD method was successfully used for analyzing the Bouguer gravity data of Gejiu tin-copper polymetallic ore field in Yunnan Province and Tongshi gold field in Western Shandong Uplift Block to extract different-scale anomalies. In these two cases, regional and local components were separated, which can reflect the geological structures at different depths and some intrusive bodies which may be associated with mineral deposits. The results reveals the spatial distribution relationship between the different intrusive bodies and the various types of mineral deposits in the aforementioned two study area, which provide some reliable evidence for exploration of new concealed mineral deposits

Underlying burning resistant mechanisms for titanium alloy

The "titanium fire" as produced during high pressure and friction is the major failure scenario for aero-engines. To alleviate this issue, Ti-V-Cr and Ti-Cu-Al series burn resistant titanium alloys have been developed. However, which burn resistant alloy exhibit better property with reasonable cost needs to be evaluated. This work unveils the burning mechanisms of these alloys and discusses whether burn resistance of Cr and V can be replaced by Cu, on which thorough exploration is lacking. Two representative burn resistant alloys are considered, including Ti14(Ti-13Cu-1Al-0.2Si) and Ti40(Ti-25V-15Cr-0.2Si)alloys. Compared with the commercial non-burn resistant titanium alloy, i.e., TC4(Ti-6Al-4V)alloy, it has been found that both Ti14 and Ti40 alloys form "protective" shields during the burning process. Specifically, for Ti14 alloy, a clear Cu-rich layer is formed at the interface between burning product zone and heat affected zone, which consumes oxygen by producing Cu-O compounds and impedes the reaction with Ti-matrix. This work has established a fundamental understanding of burning resistant mechanisms for titanium alloys. Importantly, it is found that Cu could endow titanium alloys with similar burn resistant capability as that of V or Cr, which opens a cost-effective avenue to design burn resistant titanium alloys.Comment: 6 figure

The design methodology and realization of nanocomposite films aiming for mechanical (superhardness, toughness) and functional (optical, microelectronic) properties were discussed in this paper. Superhard TiCrCN and nc-TiN/a-SiNx films and super-tough nc-TiC/a-C(Al) films were prepared through co-sputtering method by optimal design of microstructure. The nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si) passivated with a matrix of thermally grown silicon dioxide were prepared using implantation of Si into SiO₂ film, and showed improved photoluminescence and optical properties. Also discussed is the nano-composite design of thin film resistor with optimized temperature coefficient of resistivity.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA

Group channel pruning and spatial attention distilling for object detection

Due to the over-parameterization of neural networks, many model compression methods based on pruning and quantization have emerged. They are remarkable in reducing the size, parameter number, and computational complexity of the model. However, most of the models compressed by such methods need the support of special hardware and software, which increases the deployment cost. Moreover, these methods are mainly used in classification tasks, and rarely directly used in detection tasks. To address these issues, for the object detection network we introduce a three-stage model compression method: dynamic sparse training, group channel pruning, and spatial attention distilling. Firstly, to select out the unimportant channels in the network and maintain a good balance between sparsity and accuracy, we put forward a dynamic sparse training method, which introduces a variable sparse rate, and the sparse rate will change with the training process of the network. Secondly, to reduce the effect of pruning on network accuracy, we propose a novel pruning method called group channel pruning. In particular, we divide the network into multiple groups according to the scales of the feature layer and the similarity of module structure in the network, and then we use different pruning thresholds to prune the channels in each group. Finally, to recover the accuracy of the pruned network, we use an improved knowledge distillation method for the pruned network. Especially, we extract spatial attention information from the feature maps of specific scales in each group as knowledge for distillation. In the experiments, we use YOLOv4 as the object detection network and PASCAL VOC as the training dataset. Our method reduces the parameters of the model by 64.7 % and the calculation by 34.9%.Comment: Appl Intel

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical utility of serum microRNA levels (miR-9-5p and miR-128-3p) in the diagnosis and prognosis of early-stage acute ischemic stroke (AIS). METHODS: We compared the differences in serum miR-9-5p and miR-128-3p levels between patients with AIS and healthy individuals (controls). The serum levels of miR-9-5p and miR-128-3p were quantified using quantitative real-time PCR, and the association of each miRNA with AIS was determined using receiver operator characteristic curve analysis. The predictive value of these indices in the diagnosis of early-stage AIS was evaluated in conjunction with that of computed tomography findings and neuron-specific enolase levels. The prognosis of patients with AIS was evaluated three months after their discharge from hospital using the modified Rankin scale, which classifies the prognosis as either favorable or poor. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the correlation between miR-9-5p and miR-128-3p levels and patient prognosis. RESULTS: The serum levels of miR-9-5p and miR-128-3p were upregulated in patients with AIS relative to those in healthy individuals. A pronounced correlation was identified between serum miR-9-5p and miR-128-3p levels and patient prognosis, with high levels of both miRNAs being associated with poor patient outcomes. CONCLUSION: Assessment of serum miR-9-5p and miR-128-3p levels is important for the early diagnosis and prognosis of AIS

    Get PDF
Work flow in lean construction has a significant influence on project performance. Uncertain work flow will lead to waste and reduce labor productivity. Reliable work flow will contribute to improving project performance. We found twenty variables affecting work flow reliability by literature review. In order to identify critical factors of work flow reliability and explore interrelationships among them, we designed a questionnaire to collect data, applied factor analysis to identifying critical factors, and put forward hypotheses on the basis of previous research and applied structural equation model (SEM) to exploring interrelationships among the critical factors of work flow. Final model confirmed nine hypotheses and denied three hypotheses. Besides, this paper discovered other interrelationship among the critical factors except for the hypotheses. The result of this research will help project managers understand work flow easily and take effective measures to improve work flow reliability, which will contribute to implement lean construction successfully
