Chiral Symmetry in Nuclei -- Theoretical Expectations and Hard Facts
It is widely believed that chiral symmetry is restored not only at high
temperatures, but also at high nuclear densities. The drop of the order
parameter of the chiral phase transition, the chiral condensate, with density
has indeed been calculated in various models and is as such a rather robust
result. In this talk I point out that the connection of this property with
actual observables is far less clear. For this task a good hadronic description
of the primary production of hadrons, their propagation inside the nuclear
medium, their decay and the propagation of the decay products through the
medium to the detector all have to be treated with equal accuracy and weight.
In this talk I illustrate with the examples of production and
production how important in particular final state interactions

Development of a Time Projection Chamber Using Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM-TPC)
We developed a prototype time projection chamber using gas electron
multipliers (GEM-TPC) for high energy heavy ion collision experiments. To
investigate its performance, we conducted a beam test with 3 kinds of gases
(Ar(90%)-CH4(10%), Ar(70%)-C2H6(30%) and CF4). Detection efficiency of 99%, and
spatial resolution of 79 m in the pad-row direction and 313 m in the
drift direction were achieved. The test results show that the GEM-TPC meets the
requirements for high energy heavy ion collision experiments. The configuration

Experimental Signature of Medium Modifications for rho and omega Mesons in the 12 GeV p + A Reactions
The invariant mass spectra of e+e- pairs produced in 12-GeV proton-induced
nuclear reactions are measured at the KEK Proton-Synchrotron. On the low-mass
side of the omega meson peak, a significant enhancement over the known hadronic
sources has been observed. The mass spectra, including the excess, are well
reproduced by a model that takes into account the density dependence of the

Measurement of the Xi-p Scattering Cross Sections at Low Energy
In this paper we report cross-section measurements for elastic and
inelastic scatterings at low energy using a scintillating fiber active target.
Upper limit on the total cross-section for the elastic scattering was found to
be 24 mb at 90% confidence level, and the total cross section for the
reaction was found to be mb. We
compare the results with currently competing theoretical estimates.Comment: 9 page
Nuclear mass number dependence of inclusive production of omega and phi mesons in 12 GeV p + A collisions
The inclusive production of omega and phi mesons is studied in the backward
region of the interaction of 12 GeV protons with polyethylene, carbon, and
copper targets. The mesons are measured in e^+ e^- decay channels. The
production cross sections of the mesons are presented as functions of rapidity
y and transverse momentum p_T. The nuclear mass number dependences (A
dependences) are found to be A^{0.710 +/- 0.021(stat) +/- 0.037(syst)} for
omega mesons and A^{0.937 +/- 0.049(stat) +/- 0.018(syst)} for phi mesons in
the region of 0.9 < y < 1.7 and p_T < 0.75 GeV/c.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures; typos adde
Net Charge Fluctuations in Au + Au Interactions at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV
Data from Au + Au interactions at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV, obtained with the
PHENIX detector at RHIC, are used to investigate local net charge fluctuations
among particles produced near mid-rapidity. According to recent suggestions,
such fluctuations may carry information from the Quark Gluon Plasma. This
analysis shows that the fluctuations are dominated by a stochastic distribution
of particles, but are also sensitive to other effects, like global charge

Flow Measurements via Two-particle Azimuthal Correlations in Au + Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV
Two particle azimuthal correlation functions are presented for charged
hadrons produced in Au + Au collisions at RHIC sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV. The
measurements permit determination of elliptic flow without event-by-event
estimation of the reaction plane. The extracted elliptic flow values v_2 show
significant sensitivity to both the collision centrality and the transverse
momenta of emitted hadrons, suggesting rapid thermalization and relatively
strong velocity fields. When scaled by the eccentricity of the collision zone,
epsilon, the scaled elliptic flow shows little or no dependence on centrality
for charged hadrons with relatively low p_T. A breakdown of this epsilon
scaling is observed for charged hadrons with p_T > 1.0 GeV/c for the most
