Rhetorical Strategies in flouting Grice’s Maxims as Found in “Pygmalion”.

Communication is an separable part of human life because people need to express their ideas, feeling ,and thought to one another. Ideally in a communication, the speaker should fulfill the requirements of the message being informative, clear, and relevant to achieve successful conversation. Moreover Grice identified the conversational cooperation into cooperative principles that cover four maxims: quantity, quality, relation, and manner. Cooperative principles are principles of cooperation in any utterance or conversation which have to be obeyed and fulfilled by the speakers to achieve an effective communication. However, in a real conversation, there is a tendency that the speaker does not follow the cooperative principles. The reason is that the speaker has certain goals or certain reasons such as for the sake of politeness, time efficiency, persuasion, and the like. Borrowing Grice’s term, the speaker flouts Grice’s maxims. The maxims are flouted usually by means of indirect, and contradictory utterances, of figures of speech such as irony, metaphor, understatement or litotes, hyperbole or overstatement, rhetorical question, and tautology. These kinds of communication strategy are called rhetorical strategies. The use of rhetorical strategies in flouting conversational maxims in this study is represented by the main characters’ utterances of Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. There are three main characters in the drama, namely (1) Professor Higgins, (2) Eliza Doolittle, and (3) Alfred Doolittle. The general research problem to be answered is “What type of rhetorical strategies are used by the main characters in flouting Grice’s maxims as found in Pygmalion?” This general question is specifically formulated as follows: (1) What type of rhetorical strategy is the most frequently used?, (2) What maxim is the most dominantly flouted? To answer the research problem, the writer uses qualitative-content analysis. The source of data of this study is a play entitled Pygmalion, while the data are the main characters’ utterances on the basis of the research problems. The key instrument of this study is the researcher herself. To analyze and finally get the research findings, the writer uses Mile’s and Huberman’s data analysis and triangulation to avoid the subjectivity of the result. On the basis of the data analysis, it is found that three main characters flout the maxims of conversation by means of rhetorical strategies which involve tautology, metaphor, overstatement, understatement, rhetorical questions, and irony. Meanwhile, they flout Grice’s maxims as expressed in their utterances. The maxims flouted are in the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, and the maxim of manner

ELIMINATION OF CADMIUM AND LEAD MIXTURE IN SOLUTION BY PRETREATED RICE STRAW AND HUSK

An experiment on the activity of pretreated rice straw and husk in eliminating heavy metals from solution has been conducted. The rice straw and husk were soaked in 3% NaOH solution, drained and then washed with demineralised water until the washing became neutral (the results were referred to as straw and husk). The pretreated rice straw and husk (straw and husk) were mixed (stirring and without stirring) separately with Cd and Pb solution in time series. It was found that Cd was adsorbed more than Pb and straw was more active than husk. On the other hand, the stirring process and time series did not give much effect on straw, while the activity of husk increased with the increase of time period

Integrating Kansei Engineering into Kano and SERVQUAL Model to Determine the Priorities of Service Improvement (Case Study: Café Agape at Ruteng, East Nusa Tenggara – Indonesia)

In order to improve service quality, a research framework of integrating Kansei Engineering into Kano and SERV-QUAL was deployed in Café Agape. SERVQUAL model is used to identify whether the provided service has been fulfill customer needs; whether customers were satisfied and what service attributes that have negative customer satisfaction indexes. Kano model can classify the service attributes into groups, i.e., attractive, one dimensional, must be or even indifferent; the classification can be used to determine the priorities. Kansei Engineering takes the customer emotion into account and tries to identify customer needs (feelings) more specific. The integration is aimed to determine the improvement priorities. A survey of 100 customers using 21 service attributes and 10 Kansei words resulted on 15 attributes that have negative customer satisfaction score. However, only 9 attributes will be prioritized for improvement because they are Attractive (A) and One dimensional (O) attributes due to the result of Kano classification. The analysis of Kansei Engineering showed that “convenience” was the customers’ most important emotion when they receive services at Café Agape. Meanwhile, there are 6 of 10 Kansei word (customer emotional needs) significantly different between two groups of Café Agape’s customers; foreign/overseas customers felt happier, more relieved, friendly, welcome and attractive but less sedate/quiet than local/domestic ones when they consume services at Café Agape

ABSTRACT YENNY R S. The Influence Of Government Budget For Education and Health Sector Toward poverty In Indonesia. Faculty Of Economic State University Of Jakarta. 2012. This research aimed to describe the budget that government spent on education and healthcare then examine its impact toward poverty eradication in indonesia. This study employs data panel research form which is a combination of the time series form and cross section form. Poverty data reveals the number of poor people derived from the Central Statistics agency (BPS). Data of budged that government spent on education and healthcare is derived fom State Budget (APBN) for educatin and healthcare sectors allocated by the Ministry of Finance. All data employed were in 5 years period those are from 2006-2010, and came from 33 provinces in indonesia, so they formulated n = 165. The data analisys method applied Panel Data Regression meyhod. The results of the regression analisys indicate that : (a) budget that government spent on education sector has negative effect and was significant on poverty eradication in indonesia. (b) budget that government spent on healthcare sector has negative effect and was significant on poverty eradication in Indonesia

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor faktor psikososial yang menentukan kesiapan akademisi pada perguruan tinggi dalam menghadapi Perubahan organisasi. Adapun Perubahan yang dimaksud adalah Perubahan strategis yang akan di lakukan perguruan tinggi untuk menjadi universitas kelas dunia dan berbasis penelitian. Dalam hal ini Perubahan organisasi menuntut akademisi menghasilkan jurnal International untuk mendukung tujuan perguruan tinggi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini dicapai dengan menggunakan penelitian kualitatif, dan menggunakan trianggulasi data dengan nara sumber yang berbeda yaitu dosen, administrative staf dan juga mahasiswa sehingga dapat ditemukan pola gambaran kesiapan akademisi UMB menjadi world class university. Hasil dari penelitian ini menemukan beberapa factor yang menetukan kesiapan universitas menjadi world class university yaitu faktor sumber daya manusia, factor fasilitas dan bangunan fisik serta faktor organisasi. Hasil wawancara menemukan pola factor yang menentukan kesiapan akademisi dalam mendukung mercubuana menjadi world class university adalah efikasi terhadap skill bahasa ingris dan menulis penelitian. Adapun factor failitas ditentukan oleh jumlah lab yang mendukung penelitian, program International class yang tersedia serta fasilitas database perpustakaan. EDUKASI DAN PROMOSI KESEHATAN ULKUS DIABETIKUM PADA PENDERITA DIABETES MELITUS

Abstrak: Terjadinya hiperglikemia pada penderita diabetes melitus dapat mengakibatkan gejala yang sering dialami pada penderita diabetes melitus seperti polydipsia, polyuria, polypagia, penurunan berat badan, kesemutan, dan terjadinya komplikasi kaki pada penderita diabetes melitus atau sering disebut ulkus diabetikum. Ulkus diabetikum dapat mengakibatkan kualitas hidup penderita diabetes melitus memburuk, penanganan yang tidak benar akan memperparah kondisi sehingga penderita diabetes melitus dapat lebih lama tinggal di rumah sakit bahkan dapat mengalami amputasi. Tujuan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini yaitu untuk memberikan edukasi dan promosi kesehatan ulkus diabetikum yang berguna meningkatkan kemampuan masyarakat dalam merawat ulkus diabetikum yang diderita oleh setiap masyarakat. . Metode pelaksanaan pada pengabdian kepada masyarakat dilakukan dengan memberikan materi dan demonstrasi pada tanggal 10 Oktober 2023 di ikuti oleh penderita diabetes melitus sebanyak 30 peserta. Dari pre-test dan post-test yang sudah dilakukan semua peserta mendapat gambaran dan dapat mempraktikkan materi dan latihan yang sudah diajarkan dengan baik. Berdasarkah hasil pre-test dengan jumlah 30 orang menunjukkan rata-rata 17,57% memahami edukasi dan promosi ulkus diabetikum. Sedangkan pada post-test dengan jumlah peserta 30 orang menunjukkan bahwa nilai/skor rata-rata 19,07%.Abstract: The occurrence of hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus sufferers can result in symptoms that are often experienced in diabetes mellitus sufferers such as polydipsia, polyuria, polypagia, weight loss, tingling, and the occurrence of foot complications in diabetes mellitus sufferers or often called diabetic ulcers. Diabetic ulcers can cause the quality of life of diabetes mellitus sufferers to worsen, improper treatment will worsen the condition so that diabetes mellitus sufferers can stay in hospital longer and can even experience amputation. The aim of this Community Service is to provide education and health promotion for diabetic ulcers which is useful for increasing the community's ability to care for diabetic ulcers suffered by every community member. The implementation method for community service is carried out by providing materials and demonstrations on October 10 2023, attended by 30 diabetes mellitus sufferers. From the pre-test and post-test that were carried out, all participants got an overview and were able to practice the material and exercises that had been taught well. Based on the results of the pre-test with 30 people, it showed that an average of 17.57% understood education and promotion of diabetic ulcers. Meanwhile, the post-test with 30 participants showed that the average score was 19.07%
