The definitive version was published in Journal of Physiology 592 (2014): 1479-1492, doi:10.1113/jphysiol.2013.265785.Glycine input originates with interplexiform cells, a group of neurons situated within the inner retina that transmit signals centrifugally to the distal retina. The effect on visual function of this novel mechanism is largely unknown. Using gramicidin-perforated patch whole-cell recordings, intracellular recordings, and specific antibody labeling techniques, we examined the effects of the synaptic connections between glycinergic interplexiform cells, photoreceptors, and bipolar cells. To confirm that interplexiform cells make centrifugal feedback on bipolar cell dendrites, we recorded the post-synaptic glycine currents from axon-detached bipolar cells while stimulating pre-synaptic interplexiform cells. The results show that glycinergic interplexiform cells activate bipolar cell dendrites that express the α3 subunit of the glycine receptor, as well as a subclass of unidentified receptors on photoreceptors. By virtue of their synaptic contacts, glycine centrifugal feedback increases glutamate release from photoreceptors, and suppresses the uptake of glutamate by the EAAT2 transporter on photoreceptors. The net effect is a significant increase in the synaptic gain between photoreceptors and their second-order neurons. This study was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF, IOS-1021646, WS) and the National Eye Institute (NEI, EY 14161, WS)

A late Changhsingian (latest Permian) deep-water brachiopod fauna from Guizhou, South China

A deep-water brachiopod fauna (20 species in 19 genera) is described from the Late Permian Shaiwa Group of Ziyun, Guizhou, South China. New species include Pygmochonetes? shaiwaensis and Martinia ziyunensis. This fauna is associated with deep-water assemblages of pelagic radiolarians, foraminifers, bivalves and ammonoids. The brachiopod faunal correlations and age constraints of the associated fossil groups suggest that the Shaiwa fauna is late Changhsingian (latest Permian) in age. The Shaiwa fauna superficially resembles the coeval deep-water assemblage from Guangxi, South China; both are characterized by a mixture of deep-water brachiopods and shallow-water elements

AIM: To understand the factors associated with negative conversion of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA, targeted surveillance and control measures can be taken to provide scientific basis for the treatment of the disease and to improve the prognosis of the disease. METHODS: Using the method of retrospective cohort study, we collected the data of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in Tongji Hospital of Wuhan, China from 10 January to 25 March, 2020. Among the data of 282 cases, 271 patients, according to whether the negative conversion happened, were divided into negative conversion group and control group. We made the quantitative variables into classification; Chi-square test single-factor and Cox regression were used in univariate analysis and extracted 30 meaningful variables, then through the collinearity diagnosis, excluded the existence of collinear variables. Finally, 22 variables were included in Cox regression analysis. RESULTS: The gender distribution was statistically significant between two groups (p < 0.05). While in the negative conversion group, the patients of non-severe group occupied a large proportion (p < 0.001). The median time for the negative conversion group was 17 days, and at the end of the observation period, the virus duration in control group was 24 days (p < 0.05). A total of 55 variables were included in univariate analysis, among which 30 variables were statistically different between the two groups. After screening variables through collinearity diagnosis, 22 variables were included in the Cox regression analysis. Last, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), age, fibrinogen (FIB), and disease severity were associated with negative conversion of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that in the treatment of COVID-19, focus on the age of more than 65 years old, severe, high level of LDH, FIB patients, and take some targeted treatment, such as controlling of inflammation, reducing organ damage, so as to provide good conditions for virus clearance in the body

The definitive version was published in PLoS One 10 (2015): e0129719, doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0129719.We applied a series of selective antibodies for labeling the various cell types in the mammalian retina. These were used to identify the progressive loss of neurons in the FVB/N mouse, a model of early onset retinal degeneration produced by a mutation in the pde6b gene. The immunocytochemical studies, together with electroretinogram (ERG) recordings, enabled us to examine the time course of the degenerative changes that extended from the photoreceptors to the ganglion cells at the proximal end of the retina. Our study indicates that photoreceptors in FVB/N undergo a rapid degeneration within three postnatal weeks, and that there is a concomitant loss of retinal neurons in the inner nuclear layer. Although the loss of rods was detected at an earlier age during which time M- and S-opsin molecules were translocated to the cone nuclei; by 6 months all cones had also degenerated. Neuronal remodeling was also seen in the second-order neurons with horizontal cells sprouting processes proximally and dendritic retraction in rod-driven bipolar cells. Interestingly, the morphology of cone-driven bipolar cells were affected less by the disease process. The cellular structure of inner retinal neurons, i.e., ChAT amacrine cells, ganglion cells, and melanopsin-positive ganglion cells did not exhibit any gross changes of cell densities and appeared to be relatively unaffected by the massive photoreceptor degeneration in the distal retina. However, Muller cell processes began to express GFAP at their endfeet at p14, and it climbed progressively to the cell’s distal ends by 6 months. Our study indicates that FVB/N mouse provides a useful model with which to assess possible intervention strategies to arrest photoreceptor death in related diseases. This study was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF, IOS-1021646, WS) and the National Eye Institute (NEI, EY 14161, WS)

In the molecule of the title compound, C15H14N2O, the six-membered 1,3-diaza ring assumes an envelope conformation. The two benzene ring planes are almost perpendicular to each other, making a dihedral angle of 85.53 (5)°. Supramolecular aggregation is mainly effected by N—H⋯O hydrogen bonding

Environmental incidents in China:Lessons from 2006 to 2015

Environmental incidents are among the most significant environmental challenges in China. Hundreds of environmental incidents occur every year, endangering human health and ecosystems. In this paper, we conducted an analytical study of environmental incidents from 2006 to 2015 in China. We first examined the spatiotemporal characteristics of the total 5213 incidents based on the statistical data collected from the China Statistical Yearbook on Environment. We then examined the characteristics of the sources of risk, causes of harm and resulting damage of environmental incidents based on first-hand data from 1369 cases collected by the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) of China, which obtains detailed incident information. The results show that (1) there was a significant downward trend in the overall number of environmental incidents between 2006 and 2015, and developed eastern regions were high incidence areas; (2) hazardous chemicals were the main risk stressors; (3) production safety accidents and traffic accidents were the two major causes, and (4) most of these incidents resulted in polluted water and air. This paper is the first to provide a longitudinal analysis of the full scope of environmental incidents across the different regions of China, which has useful implications for policy-making and environmental management

Large Virtual Transboundary Hazardous Waste Flows:The Case of China

The Basel Convention and prior studies mainly focused on the physical transboundary movements of hazardous waste (transporting waste from one region to another for cheaper disposal). Here, we take China, the world’s largest waste producer, as an example and reveal the virtual hazardous waste flows in trade (outsourcing waste by importing waste-intensive products) by developing a multiregional input–output model. Our model characterizes the impact of international trade between China and 140 economies and China’s interprovincial trade on hazardous waste generated by 161,599 Chinese enterprises. We find that, in 2015, virtual hazardous waste flows in China’s trade reached 26.6 million tons (67% of the national total), of which 31% were generated during the production of goods that were ultimately consumed abroad. Trade-related production is much dirtier than locally consumed production, generating 26% more hazardous waste per unit of GDP. Under the impact of virtual flows, 40% of the waste-intensive production and relevant disposal duty is unequally concentrated in three Chinese provinces (including two least-developed ones, Qinghai and Xinjiang). Our findings imply the importance of expanding the scope of transboundary waste regulations and provide a quantitative basis for introducing consumer responsibilities. This may help relieve waste management burdens in less-developed “waste havens”
