    Vertically aligned InGaN nanowires with engineered axial In composition for highly efficient visible light emission.

    We report on the fabrication of novel InGaN nanowires (NWs) with improved crystalline quality and high radiative efficiency for applications as nanoscale visible light emitters. Pristine InGaN NWs grown under a uniform In/Ga molar flow ratio (UIF) exhibited multi-peak white-like emission and a high density of dislocation-like defects. A phase separation and broad emission with non-uniform luminescent clusters were also observed for a single UIF NW investigated by spatially resolved cathodoluminescence. Hence, we proposed a simple approach based on engineering the axial In content by increasing the In/Ga molar flow ratio at the end of NW growth. This new approach yielded samples with a high luminescence intensity, a narrow emission spectrum, and enhanced crystalline quality. Using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, the UIF NWs exhibited a long radiative recombination time (τr) and low internal quantum efficiency (IQE) due to strong exciton localization and carrier trapping in defect states. In contrast, NWs with engineered In content demonstrated three times higher IQE and a much shorter τr due to mitigated In fluctuation and improved crystal quality

    Characteristics and treatments of large cystic brain metastasis: radiosurgery and stereotactic aspiration.

    Brain metastasis represents one of the most common causes of intracranial tumors in adults, and the incidence of brain metastasis continues to rise due to the increasing survival of cancer patients. Yet, the development of cystic brain metastasis remains a relatively rare occurrence. In this review, we describe the characteristics of cystic brain metastasis and evaluate the combined use of stereotactic aspiration and radiosurgery in treating large cystic brain metastasis. The results of several studies show that stereotactic radiosurgery produces comparable local tumor control and survival rates as other surgery protocols. When the size of the tumor interferes with radiosurgery, stereotactic aspiration of the metastasis should be considered to reduce the target volume as well as decreasing the chance of radiation induced necrosis and providing symptomatic relief from mass effect. The combined use of stereotactic aspiration and radiosurgery has strong implications in improving patient outcomes

    An Enhanced Double-layered P2P System for the Reliability in Dynamic Mobile Environments

    The double-layered peer-to-peer (P2P) systems were introduced to reduce the network traffic in MANET. The peers in the systems are classified into super peers and sub-peers. Super peers manage their neighboring sub-peers. The network communications in the systems are done mostly among super peers. In case when a pair of neighboring super peers is too far to communicate, one or two of their sub-peers bridges the super peers. However, the double-layered systems need to improve the reliability that guarantees communications among peers. In this paper, we propose a new double-layered P2P system in which super peers are selected based on their mobility. We also propose two reliability improvement schemes, the avoidance scheme and the role changing scheme. They are applied to the proposed system to enhance the reliability of the system. The proposed system is implemented in the dynamic mobile P2P environment where peers may join and leave the network dynamically and the number of peers varies. The various experiments are done with the Network Simulator-2 v2.33. The experimental results show that the proposed system with the two schemes improved the reliability over other double-layered systems in terms of the failure rate by up to 25 %, while increasing the network traffic marginally

    Skyrmion Lattice in Two-Dimensional Chiral Magnet

    We develop a theory of the magnetic field-induced formation of Skyrmion crystal state in chiral magnets in two spatial dimensions, motivated by the recent discovery of the Skyrmionic phase of magnetization in thin film of Fe0.5_{0.5}Co0.5_{0.5}Si and in the A-phase of MnSi. Ginzburg-Landau functional of the chiral magnet re-written in the CP1^1 representation is shown to be a convenient framework for the analysis of the Skyrmion states. Phase diagram of the model at zero temperature gives a sequence of ground states, helical spin \rightarrow Skyrme crystal \rightarrow ferromagnet, as the external field BB increases, in good accord with the thin-film experiment. In close analogy with Abrikosov's derivation of the vortex lattice solution in type-II superconductor, the CP1^1 mean-field equation is solved and shown to reproduce the Skyrmion crystal state.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    Associations between Organochlorine Pesticides and Vitamin D Deficiency in the U.S. Population

    Background: Recently low dose organochlorine (OC) pesticides have been strongly linked to various chronic diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Both field and animal studies have suggested a possibility that persistent lipophilic chemicals like OC pesticides can cause vitamin D deficiency, but there have been no human studies of exposure to any chemical as a possible cause of vitamin D deficiency. This study was performed to examine if serum concentrations of OC pesticides were associated with serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in the U.S. general population. Methodology/Principal Findings: Cross-sectional associations of serum OC pesticides with serum 25(OH)D were investigated in 1,275 subjects aged 20intheNationalHealthandNutritionExaminationSurvey(NHANES),20032004.Weselected7OCpesticidesdetectablein20 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES), 2003–2004. We selected 7 OC pesticides detectable in 80 % of participants. Among the 7 OC pesticides, p,p9-DDT (b = 20.022, P,0.01), p,p9-DDE (b = 20.018, P = 0.04), and b-hexachlorocyclohexane (b = 20.022, P = 0.02) showed significant inverse associations with serum 25(OH)D levels. When study subjects were stratified by age, race, and the presence of various chronic diseases, p,p9-DDT showed consistent inverse associations in all subgroups, although stronger associations tended to be observed among subjects with old age, white race, or chronic diseases. Conclusion/Significance: The current study suggests that the background exposure to some OC pesticides leads to vitamin D deficiency in human.     Selection of high berberine yielding phellodendron insulare nak. lines and the antimicrobial activity of their extracts

    High berberine yielding Phellodendron insulare Nak. lines were selected by aggregate cloning method and the antimicrobial activity of their extracts was assessed. The berberine producing cork tree lines were selected by adopting a colorimetric method. In all 300 high berberine producing lines were selected with a colorimetric reagent containing 5M HCl and H2O2 and established from dissociated cell aggregates. The crude extracts from these lines showed antibacterial activities against tested Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimulium, and Listeria monocytogenes. The cork tree extracts were found to be inhibitory to these test organisms. Further the antimicrobial activity of plant extracts was on par with the berberine isolated from the extracts from native cork trees. These results have potential for developing alternative plant products as antimicrobial substances for application in agriculture and food industry

    Determination of Intrinsic Ferroelectric Polarization in Orthorhombic Manganites with E-type Spin Order

    By directly measuring electrical hysteresis loops using the Positive-Up Negative-Down (PUND) method, we accurately determined the remanent ferroelectric polarization Pr of orthorhombic RMnO3 (R = Ho, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds below their E-type spin ordering temperatures. We found that LuMnO3 has the largest Pr of 0.17 uC/cm^2 at 6 K in the series, indicating that its single-crystal form can produce a Pr of at least 0.6 \muuC/cm^2 at 0 K. Furthermore, at a fixed temperature, Pr decreases systematically with increasing rare earth ion radius from R = Lu to Ho, exhibiting a strong correlation with the variations in the in-plane Mn-O-Mn bond angle and Mn-O distances. Our experimental results suggest that the contribution of the Mn t2g orbitals dominates the ferroelectric polarization.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
