Atomic-scale flattening of SiC surfaces by electroless chemical etching in HF solution with Pt catalyst
The authors present a method for flattening SiC surfaces with Pt as a catalyst in HF solution. The mechanism for flattening SiC surfaces is discussed. The flattened 4H-SiC (0001) surface is composed of alternating wide and narrow terraces with single-bilayer-height steps, which are induced by the rate difference of the catalytic reactions between adjacent terraces. Scanning tunneling microscopy images reveal a 1×1 phase on the terraces. The 1×1 phase is composed of coexisting of F- and OH-terminated Si atoms, which originate from the polarization of the underlying Si-C bonds. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.Kenta Arima, Hideyuki Hara, et al. VLBI Detections of Parsec-Scale Nonthermal Jets in Radio-Loud Broad Absorption Line Quasars
We conducted radio detection observations at 8.4 GHz for 22 radio-loud broad
absorption line (BAL) quasars, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS) Third Data Release, by a very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI)
technique. The VLBI instrument we used was developed by the Optically ConnecTed
Array for VLBI Exploration project (OCTAVE), which is operated as a subarray of
the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN). We aimed at selecting BAL quasars with
nonthermal jets suitable for measuring their orientation angles and ages by
subsequent detailed VLBI imaging studies to evaluate two controversial issues
of whether BAL quasars are viewed nearly edge-on, and of whether BAL quasars
are in a short-lived evolutionary phase of quasar population. We detected 20
out of 22 sources using the OCTAVE baselines, implying brightness temperatures
greater than 10^5 K, which presumably come from nonthermal jets. Hence, BAL
outflows and nonthermal jets can be generated simultaneously in these central
engines. We also found four inverted-spectrum sources, which are interpreted as
Doppler-beamed, pole-on-viewed relativistic jet sources or young radio sources:
single edge-on geometry cannot describe all BAL quasars. We discuss the
implications of the OCTAVE observations for investigations for the orientation

Crucial roles of Robo proteins in midline crossing of cerebellofugal axons and lack of their up-regulation after midline crossing
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Robo1, Robo2 and Rig-1 (Robo3), members of the Robo protein family, are candidate receptors for the chemorepellents Slit and are known to play a crucial role in commissural axon guidance in the spinal cord. However, their roles at other axial levels remain unknown. Here we examine expression of Robo proteins by cerebellofugal (CF) commissural axons in the rostral hindbrain and investigate their roles in CF axon pathfinding by analysing Robo knockout mice.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We analysed the expression of Robo proteins by CF axons originating from deep cerebellar neurons in rodent embryos, focusing on developmental stages of their midline crossing and post-crossing navigation. At the stage of CF axon midline crossing, mRNAs of Robo1 and Robo2 are expressed in the nuclear transitory zone of the cerebellum, where the primordium of the deep cerebellar nuclei are located, supporting the notion that CF axons express Robo1 and Robo2. Indeed, immunohistochemical analysis of CF axons labelled by electroporation to deep cerebellar nuclei neurons indicates that Robo1 protein, and possibly also Robo2 protein, is expressed by CF axons crossing the midline. However, weak or no expression of these proteins is found on the longitudinal portion of CF axons. In <it>Robo1</it>/<it>2 </it>double knockout mice, many CF axons reach the midline but fail to exit it. We find that CF axons express Rig-1 (Robo3) before they reach the midline but not after the longitudinal turn. Consistent with this <it>in vivo </it>observation, axons elicited from a cerebellar explant in co-culture with a floor plate explant express Rig-1. In <it>Rig-1 </it>deficient mouse embryos, CF axons appear to project ipsilaterally without reaching the midline.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results indicate that Robo1, Robo2 or both are required for midline exit of CF axons. In contrast, Rig-1 is required for their approach to the midline. However, post-crossing up-regulation of these proteins, which plays an important role in spinal commissural axon guidance, does not appear to be required for the longitudinal navigation of CF axons after midline crossing. Our results illustrate that although common mechanisms operate for midline crossing at different axial levels, significant variation exists in post-crossing navigation.</p
Symptomatic periesophageal vagal nerve injury by different energy sources during atrial fibrillation ablation
BackgroundSymptomatic gastric hypomotility (SGH) is a rare but major complication of atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation, but data on this are scarce.ObjectiveWe compared the clinical course of SGH occurring with different energy sources.MethodsThis multicenter study retrospectively collected the characteristics and clinical outcomes of patients with SGH after AF ablation.ResultsThe data of 93 patients (67.0 ± 11.2 years, 68 men, 52 paroxysmal AF) with SGH after AF ablation were collected from 23 cardiovascular centers. Left atrial (LA) ablation sets included pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) alone, a PVI plus a roof-line, and an LA posterior wall isolation in 42 (45.2%), 11 (11.8%), and 40 (43.0%) patients, respectively. LA ablation was performed by radiofrequency ablation, cryoballoon ablation, or both in 38 (40.8%), 38 (40.8%), and 17 (18.3%) patients, respectively. SGH diagnoses were confirmed at 2 (1–4) days post-procedure, and 28 (30.1%) patients required re-hospitalizations. Fasting was required in 81 (92.0%) patients for 4 (2.5–5) days; the total hospitalization duration was 11 [7–19.8] days. After conservative treatment, symptoms disappeared in 22.3% of patients at 1 month, 48.9% at 2 months, 57.6% at 3 months, 84.6% at 6 months, and 89.7% at 12 months, however, one patient required surgery after radiofrequency ablation. Symptoms persisted for >1-year post-procedure in 7 patients. The outcomes were similar regardless of the energy source and LA lesion set.ConclusionsThe clinical course of SGH was similar regardless of the energy source. The diagnosis was often delayed, and most recovered within 6 months, yet could persist for over 1 year in 10%
Genome-wide maps of nucleosomes of the trichostatin A treated and untreated archiascomycetous yeast <em>Saitoella complicata</em>
We investigated the effects of trichostatin A (TSA) on gene expression and nucleosome position in the archiascomycetous yeast Saitoella complicata. The expression levels of 154 genes increased in a TSA-concentration-dependent manner, while the levels of 131 genes decreased. Conserved genes between S. complicata and Schizosaccharomyces pombe were more commonly TSA-concentration-dependent downregulated genes than upregulated genes. We calculated the correlation coefficients of nucleosome position profiles within 300 nucleotides (nt) upstream of a translational start of S. complicata grown in the absence and the presence of TSA (3 μg/mL). We found that 20 (13.0%) of the 154 TSA-concentration-dependent upregulated genes and 22 (16.8%) of the 131 downregulated genes had different profiles (r < 0.4) between TSA-free and TSA-treated. Additionally, 59 (38.3%) of the 154 upregulated genes and 58 (44.3%) of the 131 downregulated genes had similar profiles (r > 0.8). We did not observe a GC content bias between the 300 nt upstream of the translational start of the TSA-concentration-dependent genes with conserved nucleosome positioning and the genes with different nucleosome positioning, suggesting that TSA-induced nucleosome position change is likely not related to DNA sequence. Most gene promoters maintained their nucleosome positioning even after TSA treatment, which may be related to DNA sequence. Enriched and depleted dinucleotides distribution of S. complicata around the midpoints of highly positioned nucleosome dyads was not similar to that of the phylogenetically close yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe but similar to the basidiomycete Mixia osmundae, which has similar genomic GC content to that of S. complicata
Chronic pain-induced neuronal plasticity in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis causes maladaptive anxiety
The comorbidity of chronic pain and mental dysfunctions such as depression and anxiety disorders has long been recognized, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, using a mouse model of neuropathic pain, we demonstrated neuronal plasticity in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), which plays a critical role in chronic pain-induced maladaptive anxiety. Electrophysiology demonstrated that chronic pain increased inhibitory inputs to lateral hypothalamus (LH)-projecting BNST neurons. Chemogenetic manipulation revealed that sustained suppression of LH-projecting BNST neurons played a crucial role in chronic pain-induced anxiety. Furthermore, using a molecular genetic approach, we demonstrated that chronic pain elevated the excitability of a specific subpopulation of BNST neurons, which express cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART). The elevated excitability of CART-positive neurons caused the increased inhibitory inputs to LH-projecting BNST neurons, thereby inducing anxiety-like behavior. These findings shed light on how chronic pain induces psychiatric disorders, characterized by maladaptive anxiety
Netrin-1 Derived from the Ventricular Zone, but not the Floor Plate, Directs Hindbrain Commissural Axons to the Ventral Midline
Abstract Netrin-1 (Ntn1) emanating from the ventral midline has been thought to act as a long-range diffusible chemoattractant for commissural axons (CAs). However, CAs still grow towards the midline in the absence of the floor plate (FP), a glial structure occupying the midline. Here, using genetically loss-of-function approaches in mice, we show that Ntn1 derived from the ventricular zone (VZ), but not the FP, is crucial for CA guidance in the mouse hindbrain. During the period of CA growth, Ntn1 is expressed in the ventral two-thirds of the VZ, in addition to the FP. Remarkably, deletion of Ntn1 from the VZ and even from the dorsal VZ highly disrupts CA guidance to the midline, whereas the deletion from the FP has little impact on it. We also show that the severities of CA guidance defects found in the Ntn1 conditional mutants were irrelevant to their FP long-range chemoattractive activities. Our results are incompatible with the prevailing view that Ntn1 is an FP-derived long-range diffusible chemoattractant for CAs, but suggest a novel mechanism that VZ-derived Ntn1 directs CAs to the ventral midline by its local actions
