Five-Year Optical and Near Infrared Observations of the Extremely Slow Nova V1280 Scorpii
We present optical (, , , and ) and near
infrared (, and ) photometric and spectroscopic observations
of a classical nova V1280 Scorpii for five years from 2007 to 2011. Our
photometric observations show a declining event in optical bands shortly after
the maximum light which continues 250 days. The event is most probably
caused by a dust formation. The event is accompanied by a short ( 30
days) re-brightening episode ( 2.5 mag in ), which suggests a
re-ignition of the surface nuclear burning. After 2008, the band
observations show a very long plateau at around = 10.5 for more than 1000
days until April 2011 ( 1500 days after the maximum light). The nova had
taken a very long time ( 50 months) before entering the nebular phase
(clear detection of both [\ion{O}{iii}] 4959 and 5007) and is still continuing
to generate the wind caused by H-burning. The finding suggests that V1280 Sco
is going through the historically slowest evolution. The interval from the
maximum light (2007 February 16) to the beginning of the nebular phase is
longer than any previously known slow novae: V723 Cas (18 months), RR Pic (10
months), or HR Del (8 months). It suggests that the mass of a white dwarf in
the V1280 Sco system might be 0.6 M_\mathrm{\sun} or smaller. The distance,
based on our measurements of the expansion velocity combined with the directly
measured size of the dust shell, is estimated to be 1.1 0.5 kpc.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Charge-Focusing Readout of Time Projection Chambers
Time projection chambers (TPCs) have found a wide range of applications in
particle physics, nuclear physics, and homeland security. For TPCs with
high-resolution readout, the readout electronics often dominate the price of
the final detector. We have developed a novel method which could be used to
build large-scale detectors while limiting the necessary readout area. By
focusing the drift charge with static electric fields, we would allow a small
area of electronics to be sensitive to particle detection for a much larger
detector volume. The resulting cost reduction could be important in areas of
research which demand large-scale detectors, including dark matter searches and
detection of special nuclear material. We present simulations made using the
software package Garfield of a focusing structure to be used with a prototype
TPC with pixel readout. This design should enable significant focusing while
retaining directional sensitivity to incoming particles. We also present first

An Atlas of Exotic Variability in IGR J17091-3624: A Comparison with GRS 1915+105
We performed an analysis of all RXTE observations of the Low Mass X-ray
Binary and Black Hole Candidate IGR J17091-3624 during the 2011-2013 outburst
of the source. By creating lightcurves, hardness-intensity diagrams and power
density spectra of each observation, we have created a set of 9 variability
`classes' that phenomenologically describe the range of types of variability
seen in this object. We compare our set of variability classes to those
established by Belloni et al. (2000) to describe the similar behaviour of the
LMXB GRS 1915+105, finding that some types of variability seen in IGR
J17091-3624 are not represented in data of GRS 1915+105. We also use all
available X-ray data of the 2011-2013 outburst of IGR J17091-3624 to analyse
its long-term evolution, presenting the first detection of IGR J17091-3624
above 150 keV as well as noting the presence of `re-flares' during the latter
stages of the outburst. Using our results we place new constraints on the mass
and distance of the object, and find that it accretes at <33% of its Eddington
limit. As such, we conclude that Eddington-limited accretion can no longer be
considered a sufficient or necessary criterion for GRS 1915+105-like

Tropical fishes dominate temperate reef fish communities within western Japan
Climate change is resulting in rapid poleward shifts in the geographical distribution of tropical and subtropical fish species. We can expect that such range shifts are likely to be limited by species-specific resource requirements, with temperate rocky reefs potentially lacking a range of settlement substrates or specific dietary components important in structuring the settlement and success of tropical and subtropical fish species. We examined the importance of resource use in structuring the distribution patterns of range shifting tropical and subtropical fishes, comparing this with resident temperate fish species within western Japan (Tosa Bay); the abundance, diversity, size class, functional structure and latitudinal range of reef fishes utilizing both coral reef and adjacent rocky reef habitat were quantified over a 2 year period (2008-2010). This region has undergone rapid poleward expansion of reef-building corals in response to increasing coastal water temperatures, and forms one of the global hotspots for rapid coastal changes. Despite the temperate latitude surveyed (33°N, 133°E) the fish assemblage was both numerically, and in terms of richness, dominated by tropical fishes. Such tropical faunal dominance was apparent within both coral, and rocky reef habitats. The size structure of the assemblage suggested that a relatively large number of tropical species are overwintering within both coral and rocky habitats, with a subset of these species being potentially reproductively active. The relatively high abundance and richness of tropical species with obligate associations with live coral resources (i.e., obligate corallivores) shows that this region holds the most well developed temperate-located tropical fish fauna globally. We argue that future tropicalisation of the fish fauna in western Japan, associated with increasing coral habitat development and reported increasing shifts in coastal water temperatures, may have considerable positive economic impacts to the local tourism industry and bring qualitative changes to both local and regional fisheries resources. © 2013 Nakamura et al
