    The reaction of recoil tritium atoms with hydrogen and its isotopes

    The aim of this work has been to study the reaction of recoil tritium atoms with hydrogen and its isotopic variations (T + H2, T + D2, T + H2 - D2 (1:1 mixture) and T + HD) both theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical part includes the modification of a simple (hard-sphere energy transfer) model of hot atom reactions and uses the modified version to calculate the reaction cross sections of the various hydrogen isotope systems and the dissociation cross sections of the excited products (HT and DT) in various inert gas moderators (He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe).     Nucleotide metabolic mismatches in mammalian hearts: implications for transplantation

    INTRODUCTION: Human donor organ shortages have led surgeons and scientists to explore the use of animals as alternative organ sources. Acute thrombovascular rejection (AVR) is the main hurdle in xenotransplantation. Disparities in nucleotide metabolism in the vessels of different species may contribute significantly to the microvascular component of AVR. METHODS: We evaluated the extent of nucleotide metabolism mismatch in selected organs and endothelial cells of different mammals with particular focus on the changes in activity of ecto-5’-nucleotidase (E5’N) elicited by exposure of porcine hearts or endothelial cells to human blood (ex vivo) or human plasma (in vitro). RESULTS: E5’N activity in the rat heart was significantly higher than in other species. We noted a significant difference (p<0.001) in E5’N activity between human and pig endothelial cell lines. Initial pig aortic endothelial E5’N activity decreased in vitro after a three-hour exposure to human and porcine plasma while remaining constant in controls. Ex vivo perfusion with fresh human blood for four hours resulted in a significant decrease of E5’N activity in both wild type and transgenic pig hearts overexpressing human decay accelerating factor (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that mismatches in basal mammalian metabolic pathways and humoral immunity interact in a xenogeneic environment. Understanding the role of nucleotide metabolism and signalling in xenotransplantation may identify new targets for genetic modifications and may lead to the development of new therapies extending graft survival

    Planning Wireless Cellular Networks of Future: Outlook, Challenges and Opportunities

    Cell planning (CP) is the most important phase in the life cycle of a cellular system as it determines the operational expenditure, capital expenditure, as well as the long-term performance of the system. Therefore, it is not surprising that CP problems have been studied extensively for the past three decades for all four generations of cellular systems. However, the fact that small cells, a major component of future networks, are anticipated to be deployed in an impromptu fashion makes CP for future networks vis-a-vis 5G a conundrum. Furthermore, in emerging cellular systems that incorporate a variety of different cell sizes and types, heterogeneous networks (HetNets), energy efficiency, self-organizing network features, control and data plane split architectures (CDSA), massive multiple input multiple out (MIMO), coordinated multipoint (CoMP), cloud radio access network, and millimetre-wave-based cells plus the need to support Internet of Things (IoT) and device-to-device (D2D) communication require a major paradigm shift in the way cellular networks have been planned in the past. The objective of this paper is to characterize this paradigm shift by concisely reviewing past developments, analyzing the state-of-the-art challenges, and identifying future trends, challenges, and opportunities in CP in the wake of 5G. More specifically, in this paper, we investigate the problem of planning future cellular networks in detail. To this end, we first provide a brief tutorial on the CP process to identify the peculiarities that make CP one of the most challenging problems in wireless communications. This tutorial is followed by a concise recap of past research in CP. We then review key findings from recent studies that have attempted to address the aforementioned challenges in planning emerging networks. Finally, we discuss the range of technical factors that need to be taken into account while planning future networks and the promising research directions that necessitates the paradigm shift to do so

    Nurses experience of caring for patients with COVID-19 : a phenomenological study

    Introduction: COVID-19 has impacted all dimensions of life and imposed serious threat on humankind. Background: In Jordan, understanding how nurses experienced providing care for patients with COVID-19 offers a framework of knowledge about similar situations within the context of Arabic culture. Aim: To explore nurses' experience with providing hands-on care to patients with active COVID-19 infection in an Arabic society. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological study interviewed 10 nurses through a purposive sampling approach until data saturation was reached. The research site was hospital designated to receive patients with active COVID-19 infection. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. Findings: Three themes were generated from the data: the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on nurses' health; unfamiliar work and social environments; and conforming to professional standards. Discussion: There are specific risks to the physical and mental wellbeing of nurses who provide hands-on care to patients with COVID-19 in an Arabic society. Implication for nursing and health policy: Health care institutions should consider establishing programs that promote nurses' wellbeing and support their productivity in a crisis. A danger pay allowance should be considered for nurses during extraordinary circumstances, such as pandemics

    Tumeurs primitives de l’orbite traitement chirurgical

    Les tumeurs primitives de l’orbite sont des affections rares, leurs  manifestation cliniques sont tardives et variées pouvant êtres trompeuses. L’imagerie TDM et surtout IRM est capitale pour le diagnostic et la prise en charge. Le traitement est souvent chirurgical, le choix de la technique dépend de la taille et la topographie tumorale. Nous rapportons 13 cas de tumeurs orbitaires colligés entre 2004 et 2010. L’âge moyen de nos patients est de 36 ans, l’exophtalmie a été le maitre symptôme. Tous nos patients ont été opérés. Après étude histologique de la pièce d’exérèse opératoire il s’agissait de: 5 hémangiomes caverneux, 4 tumeurs mixtes, 2 neurinomes, 1 kyste hydatique et 1 angiome.     Global burden of human brucellosis : a systematic review of disease frequency

    BACKGROUND: This report presents a systematic review of scientific literature published between 1990-2010 relating to the frequency of human brucellosis, commissioned by WHO. The objectives were to identify high quality disease incidence data to complement existing knowledge of the global disease burden and, ultimately, to contribute towards the calculation of a Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALY) estimate for brucellosis.METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Thirty three databases were searched, identifying 2,385 articles relating to human brucellosis. Based on strict screening criteria, 60 studies were selected for quality assessment, of which only 29 were of sufficient quality for data analysis. Data were only available from 15 countries in the regions of Northern Africa and Middle East, Western Europe, Central and South America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Central Asia. Half of the studies presented incidence data, six of which were longitudinal prospective studies, and half presented seroprevalence data which were converted to incidence rates. Brucellosis incidence varied widely between, and within, countries. Although study biases cannot be ruled out, demographic, occupational, and socioeconomic factors likely play a role. Aggregated data at national or regional levels do not capture these complexities of disease dynamics and, consequently, at-risk populations or areas may be overlooked. In many brucellosis-endemic countries, health systems are weak and passively-acquired official data underestimate the true disease burden.CONCLUSIONS: High quality research is essential for an accurate assessment of disease burden, particularly in Eastern Europe, the Asia-Pacific, Central and South America and Africa where data are lacking. Providing formal epidemiological and statistical training to researchers is essential for improving study quality. An integrated approach to disease surveillance involving both human health and veterinary services would allow a better understand of disease dynamics at the animal-human interface, as well as a more cost-effective utilisation of resources

    Recombinant adenovirus IL-24-Bax promotes apoptosis of hepatocellular carcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo

    Gene therapy promises to become an alternative choice for the treatment of hepatic cancer. In many cancers, the delivery of chimeric proteins by adenovirus vector has been reported to induce apoptosis. This study was performed to evaluate whether the recombinant adenovirus interleukin (IL)-24-Bax can induce apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo. Several recombinant adenoviruses were constructed, and the expression of their encoded proteins was measured. The effects of the recombinant adenovirus on hepatocellular carcinoma cells and the normal hepatocyte cell line were investigated through cell viability and apoptosis assays after the cells were treated with Ad.Luc, Ad.IL-24, Ad.Bax or Ad.IL-24-Bax. The mechanism involved was also explored. A tumor-bearing mouse model was used to evaluate the effects of the adenovirus on tumor volume and cell apoptosis in vivo. Ad.IL-24-Bax selectively suppressed growth of hepatocellular carcinoma cells and induced apoptosis, but it had little influence on the normal hepatocytes. The mechanism of this response may include the effect of the 10HRE/VEGF385 promoter and the synergistic effect of IL-24 and Bax. Ad.IL-24-Bax also suppressed tumor growth in nude mice and induced apoptosis. Ad.IL-24-Bax may be a useful tool for gene therapy of hepatic cancer
