A nonlinear programming approach to kinematic shakedown analysis of frictional materials
AbstractThis paper develops a novel nonlinear numerical method to perform shakedown analysis of structures subjected to variable loads by means of nonlinear programming techniques and the displacement-based finite element method. The analysis is based on a general yield function which can take the form of most soil yield criteria (e.g. the Mohr–Coulomb or Drucker–Prager criterion). Using an associated flow rule, a general yield criterion can be directly introduced into the kinematic theorem of shakedown analysis without linearization. The plastic dissipation power can then be expressed in terms of the kinematically admissible velocity and a nonlinear formulation is obtained. By means of nonlinear mathematical programming techniques and the finite element method, a numerical model for kinematic shakedown analysis is developed as a nonlinear mathematical programming problem subject to only a small number of equality constraints. The objective function corresponds to the plastic dissipation power which is to be minimized and an upper bound to the shakedown load can be calculated. An effective, direct iterative algorithm is then proposed to solve the resulting nonlinear programming problem. The calculation is based on the kinematically admissible velocity with one-step calculation of the elastic stress field. Only a small number of equality constraints are introduced and the computational effort is very modest. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed numerical method have been validated by several numerical examples
Linearization and Decomposition Methods for Large Scale Stochastic Inventory Routing Problem with Service Level Constraints
A stochastic inventory routing problem (SIRP) is typically the combination of stochastic inventory control problems and NP-hard vehicle routing problems, for a depot to determine delivery volumes to its customers in each period, and vehicle routes to distribute the delivery volumes. This paper aims to solve a large scale multi-period SIRP with split delivery (SIRPSD) where a customer’s delivery in each period can be split and satisfied by multiple vehicles if necessary. The objective of the problem is to minimize the total inventory and transportation cost while some constraints are given to satisfy other criteria, such as the service level to limit the stockout probability at each customer and the service level to limit the overfilling probability of the warehouse of each customer. In order to tackle the SIRPSD with notorious computational complexity, we propose for it an approximate model, which significantly reduces the number of decision variables compared to its corresponding exact model. We develop a hybrid approach that combines the linearization of nonlinear constraints, the decomposition of the model into sub-models with Lagrangian relaxation, and a partial linearization approach for a sub model. A near optimal solution of the model can be found by the approach, and then be used to construct a near optimal solution of the SIRPSD. Numerical examples show that, for an instance of the problem with 200 customers and 5 periods that contains about 400 thousands decision variables where half of them are integer, our approach can obtain high quality near optimal solutions with a reasonable computational time on an ordinary PC
Global Incidence and mortality of oesophageal cancer and their correlation with socioeconomic indicators temporal patterns and trends in 41 countries
Oesophageal cancers (adenocarcinomas [AC] and squamous cell carcinomas [SCC]) are characterized by high incidence/mortality in many countries. We aimed to delineate its global incidence and mortality, and studied whether socioeconomic development and its incidence rate were correlated. The age-standardized rates (ASRs) of incidence and mortality of this medical condition in 2012 for 184 nations from the GLOBOCAN database; national databases capturing incidence rates, and the WHO mortality database were examined. Their correlations with two indicators of socioeconomic development were evaluated. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to generate trends. The ratio between the ASR of AC and SCC was strongly correlated with HDI (r = 0.535 [men]; r = 0.661 [women]) and GDP (r = 0.594 [men]; r = 0.550 [women], both p < 0.001). Countries that reported the largest reduction in incidence in male included Poland (Average Annual Percent Change [AAPC] = −7.1, 95%C.I. = −12,−1.9) and Singapore (AAPC = −5.8, 95%C.I. = −9.5,−1.9), whereas for women the greatest decline was seen in Singapore (AAPC = −12.3, 95%C.I. = −17.3,−6.9) and China (AAPC = −5.6, 95%C.I. = −7.6,−3.4). The Philippines (AAPC = 4.3, 95%C.I. = 2,6.6) and Bulgaria (AAPC = 2.8, 95%C.I. = 0.5,5.1) had a significant mortality increase in men; whilst Columbia (AAPC = −6.1, 95%C.I. = −7.5,−4.6) and Slovenia (AAPC = −4.6, 95%C.I. = −7.9,−1.3) reported mortality decline in women. These findings inform individuals at increased risk for primary prevention
The association between distal findings and proximal colorectal neoplasia: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Objectives:
Whether screening participants with distal hyperplastic polyps (HPs) detected by flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS) should be followed by subsequent colonoscopy is controversial. We evaluated the association between distal HPs and proximal neoplasia (PN)/advanced proximal neoplasia (APN) in asymptomatic, average-risk patients.
Methods:
We searched Ovid Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from inception to 30 June 2016 and included all screening studies that examined the relationship between different distal findings and PN/APN. Data were independently extracted by two reviewers with disagreements resolved by a third reviewer. We pooled absolute risks and odds ratios (ORs) with a random effects meta-analysis. Seven subgroup analyses were performed according to study characteristics. Heterogeneity was characterized with theI2 statistics.
Results:
We analyzed 28 studies (104,961 subjects). When compared with normal distal findings, distal HP was not associated with PN (OR=1.16, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.89–1.51,P=0.14,I2=40%) or APN (OR=1.09, 95% CI=0.87–1.36,P=0.39,I2=5%), while subjects with distal non-advanced or advanced adenoma had higher odds of PN/APN. Higher odds of PN/APN were observed for more severe distal lesions. Weaker association between distal and proximal findings was noticed in studies with higher quality, larger sample size, population-based design, and more stringent endoscopy quality-control measures. The Egger’s regression tests showed allP>0.05.
Conclusions:
Distal HP is not associated with PN/APN in asymptomatic screening population when compared with normal distal findings. Hence, the presence of distal HP alone detected by FS does not automatically indicate colonoscopy referral for all screening participants, as other risk factors of PN/APN should be considered
Use of traditional and complementary medicine as self-care strategies in community health centers
In China, Community Health Centers (CHCs) are major providers of primary care services, but their potential in empowering patients’ self-management capacity has not been assessed. This study aims to describe self-care practice patterns amongst CHC attendees in urban China.
In this cross-sectional quantitative study, 3360 CHC patients from 6 cities within the Pearl Delta Region were sampled using multistage cluster sampling.
Thirty-seven per cent had used with over-the-counter Chinese herbal medicines (OTC CHMs) in the past year and majority of respondents found OTC CHMs effective. OTC CHMs were more popular amongst those who needed to pay out of pocket for CHC services. Less than 10% used vitamins and minerals, and those with a lower socioeconomic background have a higher propensity to consume. Although doubts on their usefulness are expressed, their use by the vulnerable population may reflect barriers to access to conventional health care, cultural affinity, or a defense against negative consequences of illnesses. About 25% performed physical exercise, but the prevalence is lower amongst women and older people. Taiji seems to be an alternative for these populations with promising effectiveness, but overall only 6% of CHC attendees participated.
These results suggest that CHCs should start initiatives in fostering appropriate use of OTC CHM, vitamins, and minerals. Engaging community pharmacists in guiding safe and effective use of OTC CHM amongst the uninsured is essential given their low accessibility to CHC services. Prescription of Taiji instead of physical exercises to women and older people could be more culturally appropriate, and the possibility of including this as part of the CHC services worth further exploration
Microwave and terahertz dielectric properties of MgTiO3–CaTiO3 ceramics
The THz dielectric properties of MgTiO3–CaTiO3 ceramics are reported. The ceramics were prepared via a solid-state reaction route and the sintering conditions were optimized to obtain ceramics with high permittivity and low loss in the terahertz frequency domain. The amount of impurities (MgTi2O5) and grain size increased with increasing sintering temperature. The dielectric properties improved with increasing density, and the best terahertz dielectric performance was obtained at 1260 °C, with a permittivity of 17.73 and loss of 3.07×10−3. Ceramics sintered above 1260 °C showed a sharp increase in loss, which is ascribed to an increase in the impurity content
Structural Phase Transitions and Sodium Ordering in Na0.5CoO2: a Combined Electron Diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy Study
The nonstoichiometric NaxCoO2 system exhibits extraordinary physical
properties that correlate with temperature and Na concentration in its layered
lattice without evident long-range structure modification when conventional
crystallographic techniques are applied. For instance, Na0.7CoO2, a
thermodynamically stable phase, shows large thermoelectric power;
water-intercalated Na0.33CoO2.1.3H2O is a newly discovered superconductor with
Tc ~ 4K, and Na0.5CoO2 exhibits an unexpected charge ordering transition at
around Tco ~ 55 K. Recent studies suggest that the transport and magnetic
properties in the NaxCoO2 system strongly depend on the charge carrier density
and local structural properties. Here we report a combined variable temperature
transmission electron microscopy and Raman scattering investigation on
structural transformations in Na0.5CoO2 single crystals. A series of structural
phase transitions in the temperature range from 80 K to 1000 K are directly
identified and the observed superstructures and modulated phases can be
interpreted by Na-ordering. The Raman scattering measurements reveal phase
separation and a systematic evolution of active modes along with phase
transitions. Our work demonstrates that the high mobility and ordering of
sodium cations among the CoO2 layers are a key factor for the presence of
complex structural properties in NaxCoO2 materials, and also demonstrate that
the combination of electron diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements is
an efficient way for studying the cation ordering and phase transitions in
related systems.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
State transfer in dissipative and dephasing environments
By diagonalization of a generalized superoperator for solving the master
equation, we investigated effects of dissipative and dephasing environments on
quantum state transfer, as well as entanglement distribution and creation in
spin networks. Our results revealed that under the condition of the same
decoherence rate , the detrimental effects of the dissipative
environment are more severe than that of the dephasing environment. Beside
this, the critical time at which the transfer fidelity and the
concurrence attain their maxima arrives at the asymptotic value
quickly as the spin chain length increases. The transfer
fidelity of an excitation at time is independent of when the system
subjects to dissipative environment, while it decreases as increases when
the system subjects to dephasing environment. The average fidelity displays
three different patterns corresponding to , and . For
each pattern, the average fidelity at time is independent of when the
system subjects to dissipative environment, and decreases as increases when
the system subjects to dephasing environment. The maximum concurrence also
decreases as increases, and when , it arrives at an
asymptotic value determined by the decoherence rate and the structure
of the spin network.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Three-dimensional random Voronoi tessellations: From cubic crystal lattices to Poisson point processes
We perturb the SC, BCC, and FCC crystal structures with a spatial Gaussian noise whose adimensional strength is controlled by the parameter a, and analyze the topological and metrical properties of the resulting Voronoi Tessellations (VT). The topological properties of the VT of the SC and FCC crystals are unstable with respect to the introduction of noise, because the corresponding polyhedra are geometrically degenerate, whereas the tessellation of the BCC crystal is topologically stable even against noise of small but finite intensity. For weak noise, the mean area of the perturbed BCC and FCC crystals VT increases quadratically with a. In the case of perturbed SCC crystals, there is an optimal amount of noise that minimizes the mean area of the cells. Already for a moderate noise (a>0.5), the properties of the three perturbed VT are indistinguishable, and for intense noise (a>2), results converge to the Poisson-VT limit. Notably, 2-parameter gamma distributions are an excellent model for the empirical of of all considered properties. The VT of the perturbed BCC and FCC structures are local maxima for the isoperimetric quotient, which measures the degre of sphericity of the cells, among space filling VT. In the BCC case, this suggests a weaker form of the recentluy disproved Kelvin conjecture. Due to the fluctuations of the shape of the cells, anomalous scalings with exponents >3/2 is observed between the area and the volumes of the cells, and, except for the FCC case, also for a->0. In the Poisson-VT limit, the exponent is about 1.67. As the number of faces is positively correlated with the sphericity of the cells, the anomalous scaling is heavily reduced when we perform powerlaw fits separately on cells with a specific number of faces
