there+be+NP+ing 構文とthere+be+NP+en 構文について

This study clarifies how the there + be + NP + ing (T-ing construction) and there + be + NP + en (T-en construction) constructions are used in fiction. Its analysis demonstrates that both constructions render similar behaviors to the ordinary existential construction (T construction: e.g. there + be + NP + PP/Ø/AdP). First, the ratios of occurrences in narration to the total occurrences are on the same level among the three constructions. Second, although the T-ing construction is used slightly more often in the shortened form than the T construction, the ratios of the three constructions appearing in the shortened form vary little. Third, the T-ing construction and the T construction share an almost identical ratio of number disagreement between there’s and NP, but the T-en construction shows a very low ratio of number disagreement due to frequent use of uncountable nouns as NPs. These facts reject the hypothesis of this study that be in the there + be + NP + ing/en is profiled as auxiliary verb, unlike be in the T construction. They rather lend support to the validity of the hypothesis that any existential sentences take a small-clause structure of there + be + [NP + PP/ing/en/AP/pp/AdP/Ø]

英語のオンデマンド教材によるEAPの教授方法の有効性について

金沢大学では、English for Academic Purposes (EAP) コースを1年次学生の必修科目としている。2019年度まで対面で実施されていたEAPコースは、2020年度はコロナ禍によりオンデマンド教材を使った遠隔授業がほとんどになり、基本的に英語のみで書かれたWordファイルが学生に提示され、学生はその指示に従って課題をこなした。アカデミックな論文の書き方やプレゼンテーションの仕方を教授するというコンテントベースによる遠隔授業は、担当教員の口頭での説明がほぼない状態で1年間行われた。本論は、等化したテストと統計学の多変量解析の手法を使って、成績が上位層の学生にはこの教授法は高い有効性があることを証明した。また、この教授法は効率の良い方法であるため、今後の大学における英語教育に対して、カリキュラム構築の際に重要な示唆となることを主張する

EMI授業履修者の英語習熟度と授業経験の関係について

Students’ success in English Medium Instruction (EMI) courses is determined, in part, by their level of proficiency in English. This paper reports on questionnaire data from 192 students enrolled in EMI courses at a university in Japan concerning their English proficiency level, the extent to which they felt their proficiency level was sufficient for their EMI course, and the difficulties experienced in their EMI course, which were analysed in terms of their relationship with proficiency. It was found that (i) the majority of students were at a B1 level of proficiency on the CEFR scale – that is, below the B2 level widely viewed as necessary for success in courses taken in a second language; (ii) many students felt that their English proficiency was insufficient for the course they were taking, and among those students the principal concern was fundamental problems with comprehending course readings and lectures; and (iii) proficiency level was clearly related to the extent and number of difficulties that students experienced with different aspects of the course and with the tasks that were required of them. These findings raise questions about whether a proficiency threshold for enrolment in EMI courses should be introduced or whether greater support for students can be provided prior to or during EMI courses.学生がEMIコースで成功するかどうかは，学生の英語習熟度にある程度左右される。本論文は、日本のある大学でEMI コースを履修した192名の学生を対象に、英語の習熟度とEMI授業の履修に関するアンケートを行った結果を分析した。アンケートで自分の英語力がEMIコースでどれほど通用したか、EMIコースで経験した困難な点とその程度について問い、客観的な習熟度との関係について分析した。その結果、以下の点が明らかになった。(i)大多数の学生の英語力はCEFRのB1レベルであり、第二言語で学ぶコースで成功するために必要とされるB2レベルよりも低い。(ii)多くの学生が自分の英語力はEMIコースには不十分であると感じており、特にコースで課された読み物や英語による講義を理解するといった授業の基本的なことが難しいと回答した。(iii)学生の英語習熟度は、学生が授業や課題に対して経験した困難の度合いと明らかに関係していることがわかった。これらの結果は、EMIを受講するのにある一定以上の英語のレベルを履修要件にするべきかどうか、EMIの授業の履修前あるいは履修中にサポート支援を提供したほうが良いかどうかについて考える必要性を示している

英語による専門科目（EMI）の受講に必要な英語スキルに関する調査――アカデミック英語科目（EAP）の方向性を探る

As English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses become more and more common, English for Aca-demic Purposes (EAP) courses, which typically serve as preparation for academic studies in English, need to adapt to target the particular skills and abilities that students need to succeed in EMI. This study, undertaken at a university in Japan which is greatly expanding its provision of EMI courses, aimed to gain a concrete understanding of the specific demands of EMI courses at the institution in order to further develop the university’s EAP programme. By surveying EMI instructors as to the tasks students undertake in their classes and the ability of students to deal with those tasks, four core skills were identified as requiring particular attention in the EAP courses, namely, writing es-says/reports in English, engaging in discussions in English, listening to lectures given in English, and reading papers/book chapters/other written materials in English. Aspects of these skills are ca-tered to within the current EAP courses, but there are also possible ways in which the courses could be adapted to provide more effective preparation for students prior to taking the EMI courses.英語による専門科目（EMI）コースがますます一般的になるにしたがって、主として英語で学術研究をするための準備として位置づけられているアカデミック英語（EAP）は、学生が EMI コースで成功するために必要なスキルや能力に焦点を当てるよう適応しなければならない。EMI コースの開講が大幅に拡充しつつある日本の一大学で調査された本研究は、本学の EAP プログラムをより発展させるために、学内の EMI コースでの具体的な要求を明確に理解することが目的である。EMI コースを担当する教員に、授業内で学生が行う課題や、そのために必要な能力について調査をすると、EAP コースでは、四つの中核となるスキル――エッセイやレポートを英語で書くスキル、英語で議論をするスキル、英語で行われるレクチャーを聞くスキル、そして英語で書かれた論文や本のチャプター、その他の資料を読むスキル――に特に注力する必要があることが明らかになった。これらのスキルは現行の EAP コースでも扱われているが、学生が EMI コースを受講する前により効果的な準備ができるよう、EAP コースを適応させることが可能である

Candida albicans

Genotypes of Candida spp. isolated from exhalation of 20 dolphins, 11 water samples from captive pools, and 24 oral cavities of staff members in an aquarium using a combination of multiple drug resistance 1 gene (MDR1) and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1 5.8s-ITS 2 regions of ribosomal RNA gene (ITS rDNA) sequences were studied. The holding ratios of the dolphins, captive pools, and staff members were 70, 90, and 29%, respectively. Isolated pathogenic yeast species common to the dolphins and environments were Candida albicans and C. tropicalis. Identical genotypes in both Candida spp. based on the combination of MDR1 and ITSrDNA were found in some dolphins, between a dolphin and a staff, among dolphins and environments, and among environments. The results indicated the diffusion and exchange of pathogenic yeasts at the aquarium among dolphins and environments. The isolates at the aquarium showed higher rates of resistance to azole antifungals compared to reference isolates
