Does export dependency hurt economic development? Empirical evidence from Singapore
A rapid export growth in East Asia was once identified as a source of the sustainable economic development that the region enjoyed. However, the current global recession has turned exports from an economic virtue to a vice. There is a growing awareness that a heavy reliance on exports has caused a serious economic downturn in the region. The present paper chooses Singapore as a case study to examine the relationship between the origin of the East Asian Miracle (i.e. export dependency) and the economic growth. For this purpose, the study employs a causality test developed by Toda and Yamamoto. The empirical findings indicate that despite a negative long-run relationship between export dependency and economic growth, Singapore's heavy reliance on exports does not seem to have produced negative effects on the nation's economic growth. This is because the increase in export dependency was an effect, and not a cause, of the country's output expansion.
Effects of rocker radii with two longitudinal bending stiffnesses on plantar pressure distribution in the forefoot
INTRODUCTION: Outsole parameters of the shoe can be adapted to offload regions of pain or region of high pressures. Previous studies already showed reduced plantar pressures in the forefoot due to a proximally placed apex position and higher longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of changes in rocker radii and high LBS on the plantar pressure profile during gait. METHOD: 10 participants walked in seven shoe conditions of which one control shoe and six rocker shoes with small, medium and large rocker radii and low and high longitudinal bending stiffness. Pedar in-shoe plantar pressure measuring system was used to quantify plantar pressures while walking on a treadmill at self-selected walking speed. Peak plantar pressure, maximum mean pressure and force-time integral were analyzed with Generalized Estimated Equation (GEE) and Tukey post hoc correction (Îą = .05). RESULTS: Significantly lower plantar pressures were found in the first toe, toes 2-5, distal and proximal forefoot in all rocker shoe conditions as compared to the control shoe. Plantar pressures in the first toe and toes 2-5 were significantly lower in the small radius compared to medium and large radii. For the distal forefoot both small and medium radii significantly reduced plantar pressure compared to large radii. Low LBS reduced plantar pressure at the first toe significantly compared to high LBS independent of the rocker radius. Plantar pressures in the distal forefoot and toes 2-5 were lower in high LBS compared to low LBS. CONCLUSION: Manipulation of the rocker radius and LBS can effectively reduce peak plantar pressures in the forefoot region during gait. In line with previous studies, we showed that depending on the exact target location for offloading, different combinations of rocker radius and LBS need to be adopted to maximize treatment effects
Food and macronutrient intake of elite Ethiopian distance runners
Background: Explanations for the phenomenal success of East African distance runners include unique dietary practices. The aim of the present study was to assess the food and macronutrient intake of elite Ethiopian distance runners during a period of high intensity exercise training at altitude and prior to major competition.
Methods: The dietary intake of 10 highly-trained Ethiopian long distance runners, living and training at high altitude (approximately 2400 m above sea level) was assessed during a 7 day period of intense training prior to competition using the standard weighed intake method. Training was also assessed using an activity/training diary.
Results: Body mass was stable (i.e., was well maintained) over the assessment period (pre: 56.7 +/- 4.3 kg vs. post: 56.6 +/- 4.2 kg, P = 0.54; mean +/- SD). The diet comprised of 13375 +/- 1378 kJ and was high in carbohydrate (64.3 +/- 2.6%, 545 +/- 49 g, 9.7 +/- 0.9 g/kg). Fat and protein intake was 23.3 +/- 2.1% (83 +/- 14 g) and 12.4 +/- 0.6% (99 +/- 13 g, 1.8 +/- 0.2 g/kg), respectively. Fluid intake comprised mainly of water (1751 +/- 583 mL), while no fluids were consumed before or during training with only modest amounts being consumed following training.
Conclusions: Similar to previous studies in elite Kenyan distance runners, the diet of these elite Ethiopian distance runners met most recommendations of endurance athletes for macronutrient intake but not for fluid intake

Sizing ice hydrometeor populations using the dual-wavelength; radar ratio
Dual-wavelength (3.2 and 0.32 cm, i.e., X- and W-radar bands) radar ratio (DWR) measurements in ice clouds and precipitation using Canada's National Research Council Institute for Aerospace Research airborne radar are compared to closely collocated particle microphysical in situ sampling data in order to develop relations between DWR and characteristic hydrometeor size. This study uses the radar and in situ data sets collected during the In-Cloud ICing and Large-drop Experiment (ICICLE) campaign in midlatitude frontal clouds. Since atmospheric particle scattering at X band is predominantly in the Rayleigh regime and the W-band frequency is the highest frequency usually used for hydrometeor remote sensing, the X–W-band combination provides a relatively strong dual-wavelength reflectivity difference. This study considers radar and in situ measurements conducted in relatively homogeneous cloud and precipitation conditions. Measurements show that under these conditions, the difference between the X-band radar reflectivities observed with vertical and horizontal pointing of the radar beam are generally small and often negligible. However, W-band reflectivities at vertical beam pointing are, on average, larger than those for horizontal beam pointing by about 4 dB, which is a non-Rayleigh scattering effect from preferentially oriented non-spherical particles. A horizontal radar beam DWR–mean volume particle size relation, Dv, provides robust estimates of this characteristic size for populations of particles with different habits. Uncertainties of Dv retrievals using DWR are around 0.6 mm when Dv is greater than approximately 1 mm. Size estimates using vertical radar beam DWRs have larger uncertainties due to smaller dual-wavelength signals and stronger influences of hydrometeor habits and orientations at this geometry of beam pointing. Mean relations among different characteristic sizes, which describe the entire particle size distribution (PSD), such as Dv, and other sizes used in various applications (e.g., the mean, effective, and median sizes) are derived, so the results of this study can be used for estimating different PSD characteristic sizes.

Homogeneous nucleation of a non-critical phase near a continuous phase transition
Homogeneous nucleation of a new phase near a second, continuous, transition,
is considered. The continuous transition is in the metastable region associated
with the first-order phase transition, one of whose coexisting phases is
nucleating. Mean-field calculations show that as the continuous transition is
approached, the size of the nucleus varies as the response function of the
order parameter of the continuous transition. This response function diverges
at the continuous transition, as does the temperature derivative of the free
energy barrier to nucleation. This rapid drop of the barrier as the continuous
transition is approached means that the continuous transition acts to reduce
the barrier to nucleation at the first-order transition. This may be useful in

Physical factors contributing to rural water supply functionality performance in Ethiopia
This report communicates the findings generated from one of the project surveys â deconstruction and forensic analysis of 50 individual water points in Ethiopia. The report presents the new data generated to Ethiopiaâs groundwater resource potential; the nature and condition of hand-pump borehole installations; and the significance of both of these factors to service performance.
Based on the evidence collected, the survey results indicate the main physical factors most likely to affect functionality performance within the Ethiopian Highlands are the relatively deep depth to groundwater and the poor condition of handpump components. The impact of these factors to functionality performance can be mitigated through appropriate pump technology choice (e.g. use of deeper handpump boreholes (HPB) lift design), handpump construction, and adequate accessibility to repairs and maintenance capacity with breakdowns.
These factors should not, however, be considered to be the only driving forces of functionality outcomes in these regions of Ethiopia, and the results of this survey need to be examined alongside the wider project findings. Wider institutional arrangements, resources and dynamics, are likely to play a significant role in the implementation of appropriate borehole construction, siting and design; procurement processes; and the management capacity available for water points at national to local levels
The instability of Alexander-McTague crystals and its implication for nucleation
We show that the argument of Alexander and McTague, that the bcc crystalline
structure is favored in those crystallization processes where the first order
character is not too pronounced, is not correct. We find that any solution that
satisfies the Alexander-McTague condition is not stable. We investigate the
implication of this result for nucleation near the pseudo- spinodal in

Hard-Sphere Fluids in Contact with Curved Substrates
The properties of a hard-sphere fluid in contact with hard spherical and
cylindrical walls are studied. Rosenfeld's density functional theory (DFT) is
applied to determine the density profile and surface tension for wide
ranges of radii of the curved walls and densities of the hard-sphere fluid.
Particular attention is paid to investigate the curvature dependence and the
possible existence of a contribution to that is proportional to the
logarithm of the radius of curvature. Moreover, by treating the curved wall as
a second component at infinite dilution we provide an analytical expression for
the surface tension of a hard-sphere fluid close to arbitrary hard convex
walls. The agreement between the analytical expression and DFT is good. Our
results show no signs for the existence of a logarithmic term in the curvature
