Imaging Simulations of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect for ALMA
We present imaging simulations of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect of galaxy
clusters for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) including
the Atacama Compact Array (ACA). In its most compact configuration at 90GHz,
ALMA will resolve the intracluster medium with an effective angular resolution
of 5 arcsec. It will provide a unique probe of shock fronts and relativistic
electrons produced during cluster mergers at high redshifts, that are hard to
spatially resolve by current and near-future X-ray detectors. Quality of image
reconstruction is poor with the 12m array alone but improved significantly by
adding ACA; expected sensitivity of the 12m array based on the thermal noise is
not valid for the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect mapping unless accompanied by an
ACA observation of at least equal duration. The observations above 100 GHz will
become excessively time-consuming owing to the narrower beam size and the
higher system temperature. On the other hand, significant improvement of the
observing efficiency is expected once Band 1 is implemented in the future.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in PASJ. Note added in

The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect at Five Arc-seconds: RXJ1347.5-1145 Imaged by ALMA
We present the first image of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE)
obtained by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Combining
7-m and 12-m arrays in Band 3, we create an SZE map toward a galaxy cluster
RXJ1347.5-1145 with 5 arc-second resolution (corresponding to the physical size
of 20 kpc/h), the highest angular and physical spatial resolutions achieved to
date for imaging the SZE, while retaining extended signals out to 40
arc-seconds. The 1-sigma statistical sensitivity of the image is 0.017 mJy/beam
or 0.12 mK_CMB at the 5 arc-second full width at half maximum. The SZE image
shows a good agreement with an electron pressure map reconstructed
independently from the X-ray data and offers a new probe of the small-scale
structure of the intracluster medium. Our results demonstrate that ALMA is a
powerful instrument for imaging the SZE in compact galaxy clusters with
unprecedented angular resolution and sensitivity. As the first report on the
detection of the SZE by ALMA, we present detailed analysis procedures including
corrections for the missing flux, to provide guiding methods for analyzing and
interpreting future SZE images by ALMA.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures. Accepted for publication in PAS
New Panoramic View of CO and 1.1 mm Continuum Emission in the Orion A Molecular Cloud. I. Survey Overview and Possible External Triggers of Star Formation
We present new, wide and deep images in the 1.1 mm continuum and the
CO (=1-0) emission toward the northern part of the Orion A Giant
Molecular Cloud (Orion-A GMC). The 1.1 mm data were taken with the AzTEC camera
mounted on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) 10 m telescope
in Chile, and the CO (=1-0) data were with the 25 beam receiver
(BEARS) on the NRO 45 m telescope in the On-The-Fly (OTF) mode. The present
AzTEC observations are the widest (\timeform{1.D7}
\timeform{2.D3}, corresponding to 12 pc 17 pc) and the
highest-sensitivity (9 mJy beam) 1.1 mm dust-continuum imaging of
the Orion-A GMC with an effective spatial resolution of 40\arcsec. The
CO (=1-0) image was taken over the northern \timeform{1D.2}
\times\timeform{1D.2} (corresponding 9 pc 9 pc) area with a
sensitivity of 0.93 K in , a velocity resolution of 1.0 km
s, and an effective spatial resolution of 21\arcsec. With these data,
together with the MSX 8 m, Spitzer 24 m and the 2MASS data, we have
investigated the detailed structure and kinematics of molecular gas associated
with the Orion-A GMC and have found evidence for interactions between molecular
clouds and the external forces that may trigger star formation. Two types of
possible triggers were revealed; 1) Collision of the diffuse gas on the cloud
surface, particularly at the eastern side of the OMC-2/3 region, and 2)
Irradiation of UV on the pre-existing filaments and dense molecular cloud
cores. Our wide-field and high-sensitivity imaging have provided the first
comprehensive view of the potential sites of triggered star formation in the
Orion-A GMC.Comment: 32 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in PAS
The Initial Conditions of Clustered Star Formation. II. N2H+ Observations of the Ophiuchus B Core
We present a Nobeyama 45 m Radio Telescope map and Australia Telescope
Compact Array pointed observations of N2H+ 1-0 emission towards the clustered,
low mass star forming Oph B Core within the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. We
compare these data with previously published results of high resolution NH3
(1,1) and (2,2) observations in Oph B. We use 3D Clumpfind to identify emission
features in the single-dish N2H+ map, and find that the N2H+ `clumps' match
well similar features previously identified in NH3 (1,1) emission, but are
frequently offset to clumps identified at similar resolution in 850 micron
continuum emission. Wide line widths in the Oph B2 sub-Core indicate
non-thermal motions dominate the Core kinematics, and remain transonic at
densities n ~ 3 x 10^5 cm^-3 with large scatter and no trend with N(H2).
Non-thermal motions in Oph B1 and B3 are subsonic with little variation, but
also show no trend with H2 column density. Over all Oph B, non-thermal N2H+
line widths are substantially narrower than those traced by NH3, making it
unlikely NH3 and N2H+ trace the same material, but the v_LSR of both species
agree well. We find evidence for accretion in Oph B1 from the surrounding
ambient gas. The NH3/N2H+ abundance ratio is larger towards starless Oph B1
than towards protostellar Oph B2, similar to recent observational results in
other star-forming regions. Small-scale structure is found in the ATCA N2H+ 1-0
emission, where emission peaks are again offset from continuum emission. In
particular, the ~1 M_Sun B2-MM8 clump is associated with a N2H+ emission
minimum and surrounded by a broken ring-like N2H+ emission structure,
suggestive of N2H+ depletion. We find a strong general trend of decreasing N2H+
abundance with increasing N(H2) in Oph B which matches that found for NH3.Comment: 55 pages (manuscript), 15 figures, ApJ accepte
Chest Pain of Uncertain Aetiology: Role of Contrast Enhanced Computed Tomography in the Emergency Department
There is increasing role of computed tomographic (CT) in the assessment of acute chest pain in the emergency department especially when the diagnosis is not clear. We report a case where non ECG gated contrast enhanced CT in the emergency department for rule-out of pulmonary embolus guided to the actual diagnosis, which was, acute coronary event, as evidenced by the presence of perfusion defect
