Walk Through Solar System Times: An Exhibit with an Astrobiology Emphasis

In this astrobiology outreach project, we attempt to present the research of the Goddard Center for Astrobiology (GCA) in the context of the history of the Solar System. GCA research emphasizes the origin and formation of complex pre-biotic organic materials in extraterrestrial environments and explores whether the delivery of these primordial materials and water to the early Earth enabled the emergence and evolution of life. The content expounds on areas that are usually not touched upon in a timeline of the Earth's formation. The exhibit addresses the questions: How did our solar system form? How is the formation of our solar systems similar or different from others? How did the organic molecules we observe in space get to the Earth? What conditions are most suitable for life? We will address the issues and challenges of designing the exhibit and of explaining advanced astrobiology research topics to the public

Will a rise in consumption tax share increase the effectiveness of government spending?

The Australian tax reform in July 2000 gave heavier weights to consumption tax in the tax mix at the expense of the income tax. This paper shows that the trade off among the tax-mix policy parameters depends on the structure of the economy. Given that the reform is tax-revenue neutral and no change in monetary stance, a rise in the share of consumption tax in the tax mix may increase the effectiveness of government spending in stabilising the economy if certain contain is fulfilled. A numerical example is included for illustration purpose

Initiating Buprenorphine in Patients Hospitalized with Intravenous Drug-Use-Related Endocarditis

During the current opioid crisis, hospitalizations for the treatment of intravenous drug use-related infective endocarditis have increased. Despite this, opioid use disorder is inadequately treated resulting in continued drug use, higher surgical intervention, recurrence and mortality rates relative to non-drug use-related endocarditis. Buprenorphine* is a safe and effective medication-assisted addiction treatment in outpatient settings; however, buprenorphine remains underutilized, particularly among patients hospitalized for infective endocarditis. Emergency department-initiated buprenorphine combined with referral to ongoing treatment is associated with improved rates of addiction treatment engagement. Therefore, our objective is to investigate whether hospital-initiated buprenorphine combined with referral in patients with opioid use disorder admitted for infective endocarditis is more effective than referral alone for treatment engagement 30 days post-hospital discharge. These results may optimize our standard of care for patients with intravenous drug use-associated infective endocarditis to enhance enrollment in treatment for opioid use disorder
