Width distribution of contact lines on a disordered substrate
We have studied the roughness of a contact line of a liquid meniscus on a
disordered substrate by measuring its width distribution. The comparison
between the measured width distribution and the width distribution calculated
in previous works, extended here to the case of open boundary conditions,
confirms that the Joanny-de Gennes model is not sufficient to describe the
dynamics of contact lines at the depinning threshold. This conclusion is in
agreement with recent measurements which determine the roughness exponent by
extrapolation to large system sizes.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Roughening Transition in a Moving Contact Line
The dynamics of the deformations of a moving contact line on a disordered
substrate is formulated, taking into account both local and hydrodynamic
dissipation mechanisms. It is shown that both the coating transition in contact
lines receding at relatively high velocities, and the pinning transition for
slowly moving contact lines, can be understood in a unified framework as
roughening transitions in the contact line. We propose a phase diagram for the
system in which the phase boundaries corresponding to the coating transition
and the pinning transition meet at a junction point, and suggest that for
sufficiently strong disorder a receding contact line will leave a
Landau--Levich film immediately after depinning. This effect may be relevant to
a recent experimental observation in a liquid Helium contact line on a Cesium
substrate [C. Guthmann, R. Gombrowicz, V. Repain, and E. Rolley, Phys. Rev.

Automatic Probe Movement Guidance for Freehand Obstetric Ultrasound
We present the first system that provides real-time probe movement guidance
for acquiring standard planes in routine freehand obstetric ultrasound
scanning. Such a system can contribute to the worldwide deployment of obstetric
ultrasound scanning by lowering the required level of operator expertise. The
system employs an artificial neural network that receives the ultrasound video
signal and the motion signal of an inertial measurement unit (IMU) that is
attached to the probe, and predicts a guidance signal. The network termed
US-GuideNet predicts either the movement towards the standard plane position
(goal prediction), or the next movement that an expert sonographer would
perform (action prediction). While existing models for other ultrasound
applications are trained with simulations or phantoms, we train our model with
real-world ultrasound video and probe motion data from 464 routine clinical
scans by 17 accredited sonographers. Evaluations for 3 standard plane types
show that the model provides a useful guidance signal with an accuracy of 88.8%
for goal prediction and 90.9% for action prediction.Comment: Accepted at the 23rd International Conference on Medical Image

Effectiveness of interventions to promote healthy diet in primary care: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
Background
A diet rich in fruit, vegetables and dietary fibre and low in fat is associated with reduced risk of chronic disease. This review aimed to estimate the effectiveness of interventions to promote healthy diet for primary prevention among participants attending primary care.

Methods
A systematic review of trials using individual or cluster randomisation of interventions delivered in primary care to promote dietary change over 12 months in healthy participants free from chronic disease or defined high risk states. Outcomes were change in fruit and vegetable intake, consumption of total fat and fibre and changes in serum cholesterol concentration.

Results
Ten studies were included with 12,414 participants. The design and delivery of interventions were diverse with respect to grounding in behavioural theory and intervention intensity. A meta-analysis of three studies showed an increase in fruit consumption of 0.25 (0.01 to 0.49) servings per day, with an increase in vegetable consumption of 0.25 (0.06 to 0.44) serving per day. A further three studies that reported on fruit and vegetable consumption together showed a pooled increment of 0.50 (0.13 to 0.87) servings per day. The pooled effect on consumption of dietary fibre, from four studies, was estimated to be 1.97 (0.43 to 3.52) gm fibre per day. Data from five studies showed a mean decrease in total fat intake of 5.2% of total energy (1.5 to 8.8%). Data from three studies showed a mean decrease in serum cholesterol of 0.10 (-0.19 to 0.00) mmol/L.

Conclusion
Presently-reported interventions to promote healthy diet for primary prevention in primary care, which illustrate a diverse range of intervention methods, may yield small beneficial changes in consumption of fruit, vegetables, fibre and fat over 12 months. The present results do not exclude the possibility that more effective intervention strategies might be developed.

Signal Transduction Pathways in the Pentameric Ligand-Gated Ion Channels
The mechanisms of allosteric action within pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs) remain to be determined. Using crystallography, site-directed mutagenesis, and two-electrode voltage clamp measurements, we identified two functionally relevant sites in the extracellular (EC) domain of the bacterial pLGIC from Gloeobacter violaceus (GLIC). One site is at the C-loop region, where the NQN mutation (D91N, E177Q, and D178N) eliminated inter-subunit salt bridges in the open-channel GLIC structure and thereby shifted the channel activation to a higher agonist concentration. The other site is below the C-loop, where binding of the anesthetic ketamine inhibited GLIC currents in a concentration dependent manner. To understand how a perturbation signal in the EC domain, either resulting from the NQN mutation or ketamine binding, is transduced to the channel gate, we have used the Perturbation-based Markovian Transmission (PMT) model to determine dynamic responses of the GLIC channel and signaling pathways upon initial perturbations in the EC domain of GLIC. Despite the existence of many possible routes for the initial perturbation signal to reach the channel gate, the PMT model in combination with Yen's algorithm revealed that perturbation signals with the highest probability flow travel either via the ÎČ1-ÎČ2 loop or through pre-TM1. The ÎČ1-ÎČ2 loop occurs in either intra- or inter-subunit pathways, while pre-TM1 occurs exclusively in inter-subunit pathways. Residues involved in both types of pathways are well supported by previous experimental data on nAChR. The direct coupling between pre-TM1 and TM2 of the adjacent subunit adds new insight into the allosteric signaling mechanism in pLGICs. © 2013 Mowrey et al
Differential Gene Expression in the EphA4 Knockout Spinal Cord and Analysis of the Inflammatory Response Following Spinal Cord Injury
Mice lacking the axon guidance molecule EphA4 have been shown to exhibit extensive axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury. To assess mechanisms by which EphA4 may modify the response to neural injury a microarray was performed on spinal cord tissue from mice with spinal cord injury and sham injured controls. RNA was purified from spinal cords of adult EphA4 knockout and wild-type mice four days following lumbar spinal cord hemisection or laminectomy only and was hybridised to Affymetrix All-Exon Array 1.0 GeneChipsâą. While subsequent analyses indicated that several pathways were altered in EphA4 knockout mice, of particular interest was the attenuated expression of a number of inflammatory genes, including Arginase 1, expression of which was lower in injured EphA4 knockout compared to wild-type mice. Immunohistological analyses of different cellular components of the immune response were then performed in injured EphA4 knockout and wildtype spinal cords. While numbers of infiltrating CD3+ T cells were low in the hemisection model, a robust CD11b+ macrophage/microglial response was observed post-injury. There was no difference in the overall number or spread of macrophages/activated microglia in injured EphA4 knockout compared to wild-type spinal cords at 2, 4 or 14 days post-injury, however a lower proportion of Arginase-1 immunoreactive macrophages/activated microglia was observed in EphA4 knockout spinal cords at 4 days post-injury. Subtle alterations in the neuroinflammatory response in injured EphA4 knockout spinal cords may contribute to the regeneration and recovery observed in these mice following injury
Non-planar four-mirror optical cavity for high intensity gamma ray flux production by pulsed laser beam Compton scattering off GeV-electrons
As part of the R&D toward the production of high flux of polarised Gamma-rays
we have designed and built a non-planar four-mirror optical cavity with a high
finesse and operated it at a particle accelerator. We report on the main
challenges of such cavity, such as the design of a suitable laser based on
fiber technology, the mechanical difficulties of having a high tunability and a
high mechanical stability in an accelerator environment and the active
stabilization of such cavity by implementing a double feedback loop in a FPGA
