The IMF of Extremely Metal-Poor Stars and the Probe into the Star-Formation Process of the Milky Way

We discuss the star formation history of the Galaxy, based on the observations of extremely metal-poor stars (EMP) in the Galactic halo, to gain an insight into the evolution and structure formation in the early universe. The initialmass function (IMF) of EMP stars is derived from the observed fraction of carbon-enhanced EXP (CEMP) stars among the EMP survivors, which are thought to originate from the evolution in the close binary systems with mass transfer. Relying upon the theory of the evolution of EMP stars and of their binary evolution, we find that stars of metallicity [Fe/H]<-2.5 were formed at typical mass of ~10M_sun. The top heavy IMF thus obtained is applied to study the early chemical evolution of the Galaxy. We construct the merging history of our Galaxy semi-analytically and derive the metallicity distribution function (MDF) of low-mass EMP stars that survive to date with taking into account the contribution of binary systems. It is shown that the resultant MDF can well reproduce the observed distribution of EMP survivors, and, in particular, that they almost all stem from a less-mass companion in binary systems. We also investigate how first stars affect the MDF of EMP stars.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, conference proceedings of First Star II

Electronic Phase Diagram of High-T_c Cuprate Superconductors from a Mapping of the In-Plane Resistivity Curvature

We propose that Resistivity Curvature Mapping (RCM) based on the in-plane resistivity data is a useful way to objectively draw an electronic phase diagrams of high-T_c cuprates, where various crossovers are important. In particular, the pseudogap crossover line can be conveniently determined by RCM. We show experimental phase diagrams obtained by RCM for Bi_{2}Sr_{2-z}La_{z}CuO_{6+\delta}, La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}, and YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}, and demonstrate the universal nature of the pseudogap crossover. Intriguingly, the electronic crossover near optimum doping depicted by RCM appears to occur rather abruptly, suggesting that the quantum critical regime, if exists, must be very narrow.Comment: 4 pages, 3 color figures, final version accepted for publication in Phys. Inhomogeneous CuO_{6} Tilt Distribution and Charge/Spin Correlations in La_{2-x-y}Nd_{y}Sr_{x}CuO$_{4} around commensurate hole concentration

Phononic and magnetic Raman scattering are studied in La2−x−y_{2-x-y}Ndy_{y}Srx_{x}CuO4_{4} with three doping concentrations: x ~ 1/8, y = 0; x ~ 1/8, y = 0.4; and x = 0.01, y = 0. We observe strong disorder in the tilt pattern of the CuO_{6} octahedra in both the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases which persist down to 10 K and are coupled to bond disorder in the cation layers around 1/8 doping independent of Nd concentration. The weak magnitude of existing charge/spin modulations in the Nd doped structure does not allow us to detect the specific Raman signatures on lattice dynamics or two-magnon scattering around 2200 cm-1.Comment: to be published in Phys. An Infrared study of the Josephson vortex state in high-Tc cuprates

We report the results of the c-axis infrared spectroscopy of La_{2-x} Sr_x CuO_4 in high magnetic field oriented parallel to the CuO_2 planes. A significant suppression of the superfluid density with magnetic field rho_s(H) is observed for both underdoped (x=0.125) and overdoped (x=0.17) samples. We show that the existing theoretical models of the Josephson vortex state fail to consistently describe the observed effects and discuss possible reasons for the discrepancies

Thermal Conductivity of Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_xCuO_4 Single Crystals and Signatures of Stripes in an Electron-Doped Cuprate

It was recently demonstrated that the anisotropic phonon heat transport behavior is a good probe of the stripe formation in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) [X. F. Sun {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 67}, 104503 (2003)]. Using this probe, we examined an electron-doped cuprate Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_xCuO_4 (PLCCO) and found that essentially the same features as those in LSCO are observed. Moreover, the in-plane resistivity \rho_{ab} of lightly-doped PLCCO shows metallic behavior (d\rho_{ab}/dT > 0) in the N\'eel ordered state with a mobility comparable to that in LSCO. It is discussed that these peculiar properties in common with LSCO signify the existence of stripes in electron-doped cuprates.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, revised version accepted for publication in Phys. Evolution of the Hall Coefficient and the Peculiar Electronic Structure of the Cuprate Superconductors

Although the Hall coefficient R_H is an informative transport property of metals and semiconductors, its meaning in the cuprate superconductors has been ambiguous because of its unusual characteristics. Here we show that a systematic study of R_H in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals over a wide doping range establishes a qualitative understanding of its peculiar evolution, which turns out to reflect a two-component nature of the electronic structure caused by an unusual development of the Fermi surface recently uncovered by photoemission experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, final version appeared in Phys.
