    Papel de la bahía de Jiaozhou como una fuente/depósito de CO2 durante un ciclo estacional

    The seasonal evolution of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and CO2 air-sea fluxes in the Jiaozhou Bay was investigated by means of a data set from four cruises covering a seasonal cycle during 2003 and 2004. The results revealed that DIC had no obvious seasonal variation, with an average concentration of 2035 µmol kg-1 C in surface water. However, the sea surface partial pressure of CO2 changed with the season. pCO2 was 695 µatm in July and 317 µatm in February. Using the gas exchange coefficient calculated with Wanninkhof’s model, it was concluded that the Jiaozhou Bay was a source of atmospheric CO2 in spring, summer, and autumn, whereas it was a sink in winter. The Jiaozhou Bay released 2.60 x 1011 mmol C to the atmosphere in spring, 6.18 x 1011 mmol C in summer, and 3.01 x 1011 mmol C in autumn, whereas it absorbed 5.32 x 1010 mmol C from the atmosphere in winter. A total of 1.13 x 1012 mmol C was released to the atmosphere over one year. The behaviour as a carbon source/sink obviously varied in the different regions of the Jiaozhou Bay. In February, the inner bay was a carbon sink, while the bay mouth and the outer bay were carbon sources. In June and July, the inner and outer bay were carbon sources, but the strength was different, increasing from the inner to the outer bay. In November, the inner bay was a carbon source, but the bay mouth was a carbon sink. The outer bay was a weaker CO2 source. These changes are controlled by many factors, the most important being temperature and phytoplankton. Water temperature in particular was the main factor controlling the carbon dioxide system and the behaviour of the Jiaozhou Bay as a carbon source/sink. The Jiaozhou Bay is a carbon dioxide source when the water temperature is higher than 6.6°C. Otherwise, it is a carbon sink. Phytoplankton is another controlling factor that may play an important role in behaviour as a carbon source or sink in regions where the source or sink nature is weaker.La evolución estacional del carbono inorgánico disuelto (DIC) y el intercambio de flujos de CO2 aire-mar en la bahía de Jiaozhou han sido investigados a partir de datos obtenidos en 4 campañas oceanográficas que cubren un ciclo estacional entre 2003 y 2004. Utilizando el coeficiente de intercambio de gases calculado con el modelo de Wanninkhof concluíamos que la bahía de Jiaozhou era una fuente de CO2 a la atmósfera en primavera, verano y otoño, mientras que era un depósito de CO2 en invierno. La bahía proporcionaba 2.60 × 1011 mmol C a la atmósfera en primavera, 6.18 × 1011 mmol C en verano, y 3.01 × 1011 mmol C in otoño, mientras absorbia 5.32 × 1010 mmol C desde la atmósfera en invierno. Un total de 1.13 × 1012 mmol C eran liberados a la atmósfera durante un año. El comportamiento como fuente/depósito de carbono, obviamente era diferente en las distintas regiones de la bahía de Jiaozhou. En Febrero, la parte interior de la bahía era un depósito para el carbono, mientras que la desembocadura y la parte exterior actuaba como fuente de carbono. En Junio y Julio, las partes interna y externa de la bahía eran fuentes de carbono, pero la intensidad era diferente, incrementando desde la parte interior a la exterior de la bahía. En Noviembre, la parte interior de la bahía era fuente de carbono, pero la desembocadura de la bahía se comportaba como depósito de carbono. El exterior de la bahía era una fuente poco importante de CO2. Estos cambios están controlados por muchos factores, siendo los mas importantes la temperatura y el fitoplancton. Especialmente, la temperatura del agua era el factor principal en el control del dióxido de carbono en el sistema y del comportamiento de la bahía de Jiaozhou como fuente/depósito de carbono. La bahía de Jiaozhou es una fuente de dióxido de carbono cuando la temperatura del agua es mas alta que 6.6ºC. Si no es así es un depósito de carbono. El fitoplancton es el otro factor de control que puede jugar un papel importante en el comportamiento como fuente o depósito de carbono en regiones donde el carácter de fuente o depósito es debil.

    pCO(2) and carbon fluxes across sea-air interface in the Changjiang Estuary and Hangzhou Bay

    Partial pressure of CO(2) (pCO(2)) was investigated in the Changjiang (Yangtze River) Estuary, Hangzhou Bay and their adjacent areas during a cruise in August 2004, China. The data show that pCO(2) in surface waters of the studied area was higher than that in the atmosphere with only exception of a patch east of Zhoushan Archipelago. The pCO(2) varied from 168 to 2 264 mu atm, which fell in the low range compared with those of other estuaries in the world. The calculated sea-air CO(2) fluxes decreased offshore and varied from -10.0 to 88.1 mmol m(-2) d(-1) in average of 24.4 +/- 16.5 mmol m(-2) d(-1). Although the area studied was estimated only 2 x 10(4) km(2), it emitted (5.9 +/- 4.0) x 10(3) tons of carbon to the atmosphere every day. The estuaries and their plumes must be further studied for better understanding the role of coastal seas playing in the global oceanic carbon cycle

    The distribution and seasonal variations of sedimentary organic matter in the East China Sea shelf

    We sampled the surface sediments of the East China Sea shelf (ECSS) in spring and autumn, 2014, and analyzed the biogenic element concentrations and stable carbon (delta C-13) and nitrogen (delta N-15) isotopic compositions to study the distribution and seasonal variations of sedimentary organic matter (OM). The average concentrations of TOC, TN and OP in autumn decreased obviously compared with those in spring. The increase of delta N-15 values in autumn indicated the priority utilization of N-14 by bacterial decomposition activity. The values of delta C-13 were used to trace organic matter sources. The estimated percentages for terrestrial OM were in the range of 0-34.6%. They generally decreased seaward in nearshore areas, indicating the decrease of terrigenous influence. There was an obvious tongue-shaped region with relatively low percentages of terrestrial OM (< 12%) in the northern part of the ECSS, which may be a reflection of the intrusion pathway of the outer seawater

    Effect of a Dairy Cow’s Feeding System on the Flavor of Raw Milk: Indoor Feeding or Grazing

    The flavor of fresh, raw milk is considered to be the key to maintaining the quality of dairy products, and is very crucial in affecting a consumer’s choice. To better understand the differences in flavor of fresh milk between feeding patterns, we conducted the following study. Twelve Holstein cows reared in pure grazing mode and twelve reared intensively in medium to large farms were selected from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regions at the same time, and the flavor of their raw milk was analyzed. Aroma profiles and taste attributes were assessed by electronic nose and electronic tongue, respectively, and volatile flavor compounds were characterized and quantified by Headspace-Solid Phase Microextraction/Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Thirteen volatile compounds were identified in the indoor feeding pattern and 12 in the grazing; most of them overlapped. W1S, W2S and W5S were the main contributing sensors of the electronic nose for the overall assessment of the aroma profile. Raw milk from grazing had more intense astringency, bitterness, sourness and richness in taste compared to indoor feeding. Different dietary conditions may contribute to a variety of aroma profiles. Oxime-, methoxy-phenyl-, octadecanoic acid, furfural and dodecanoic acid were the key volatile flavor compounds of grazing. Meanwhile, raw milk from indoor feeding patterns was unique in 2-nonanone, heptanoic acid and n-decanoic acid. All three detection techniques were valid and feasible for differentiating raw milk in both feeding patterns, and the compounds were significantly correlated with the key sensors by correlation analysis. This study is promising for the future use of metabolic sources of volatile organic compounds to track and monitor animal feeding systems

    Effects of resveratrol on glucose control and insulin sensitivity in subjects with type 2 diabetes: systematic review and meta-analysis

    Abstract Although the regular consumption of resveratrol has been known to improve glucose homeostasis and reverse insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the reported results are inconsistent. Thus, we aimed to assess the effects of resveratrol on glycemic control and insulin sensitivity among patients with T2DM. We searched for relevant articles published until June 2017 on PubMed-Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Randomized controlled trials in T2DM patients administered with resveratrol as intervention were included. After study selection, quality assessment and data extraction were performed independently by two authors, and STATA and RevMan software were used for statistical analysis. Nine randomized controlled trials involving 283 participants were included. Meta-analysis showed that resveratrol significantly improved the fasting plasma glucose ( −0.29 mmol/l, 95% CI: −0.51, −0.06, p < 0.01) and insulin levels (−0.64 U/mL, 95% CI: −0.95, −0.32, p < 0.0001). The drug also reduced homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure among participants with T2DM. The changes in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were negligible. Subgroup analysis comparing the resveratrol supplementation doses of < 100 mg/d versus ≥ 100 mg/d revealed a significant difference in fasting plasma glucose. In particular, the latter dose presented more favorable results. This meta-analysis provides evidence that supplementation of resveratrol may benefit management of T2DM

    Structure of the Arabidopsis thaliana DCL4 DUF283 domain reveals a noncanonical double-stranded RNA-binding fold for protein–protein interaction

    Dicer or Dicer-like (DCL) protein is a catalytic component involved in microRNA (miRNA) or small interference RNA (siRNA) processing pathway, whose fragment structures have been partially solved. However, the structure and function of the unique DUF283 domain within dicer is largely unknown. Here we report the first structure of the DUF283 domain from the Arabidopsis thaliana DCL4. The DUF283 domain adopts an α-β-β-β-α topology and resembles the structural similarity to the double-stranded RNA-binding domain. Notably, the N-terminal α helix of DUF283 runs cross over the C-terminal α helix orthogonally, therefore, N- and C-termini of DUF283 are in close proximity. Biochemical analysis shows that the DUF283 domain of DCL4 displays weak dsRNA binding affinity and specifically binds to double-stranded RNA-binding domain 1 (dsRBD1) of Arabidopsis DRB4, whereas the DUF283 domain of DCL1 specifically binds to dsRBD2 of Arabidopsis HYL1. These data suggest a potential functional role of the Arabidopsis DUF283 domain in target selection in small RNA processing

    Sediment quality of the Bohai Sea and the northern Yellow Sea indicated by the results of acid-volatile sulfide and simultaneously extracted metals determinations

    The surface sediments from the Bohai Sea (BS) and the northern Yellow Sea (NYS) were analyzed for acidvolatile sulfide (AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) to assess the sediment quality. The results indicated that>60% of the samples were found to have possible adverse effects on aquatic life in the BS based on the difference between the concentrations of AVS ([AVS]) and SEM ([SEM]), and the corresponding percentage in the NYS was<25%. Nevertheless, there was no indication of adverse effects for all the BS and the NYS samples when the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration was introduced in the sediment quality evaluation with [AVS] and [SEM]. The grain size composition, TOC, water content and pH all had significant influence on the distribution of [SEM] and the [SEM]/[AVS] ratios; while, in contrast, the distribution of [AVS] could be mainly determined by the redox condition of sediment

    Absorption properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the East China Sea and the waters off eastern Taiwan

    The absorption properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the East China Sea (ECS) and the waters off eastern Taiwan (WET) were studied during May 2014. CDOM absorption coefficient (a(280)) and spectral slope (S275-295) revealed considerable spatial variations. In the ECS, the values of a(280) and S275-295 presented a reverse distribution pattern. In the WET, a(280) values were generally low while S275-295 values were generally high. Vertical distributions of a(280) and S275-295 also varied in different regions. Terrestrial input, phytoplankton production, sediment release or photobleaching may be responsible for the dynamics of CDOM. Relationships among CDOM related parameters could partly support this conclusion. a(280) were also used to trace different water masses and the result showed that the influence of Changjiang Diluted Water could reach the outer shelf of the northern ECS, and that the Kuroshio Current had a strong influence on the middle shelf of the southern ECS
