    Anisotropic Magneto-conductance of InAs Nanowire: Angle Dependent Suppression of 1D Weak Localization

    The magneto-conductance of an InAs nanowire is investigated with respect to the relative orientation between external magnetic field and the nanowire axis. It is found that both the perpendicular and the parallel magnetic fields induce a positive magneto-conductance. Yet the parallel magnetic field induced longitudinal magneto-conductance has a smaller magnitude. This anisotropic magneto-transport phenomenon is studied as a function of temperature, magnetic field strength and at an arbitrary angle between the magnetic field and the nanowire. We show that the observed effect is in quantitative agreement with the suppression of one-dimensional (1D) weak localization

    Lepton flavor violating Higgs boson decays in seesaw models: new discussions

    The lepton flavor violating decay of the Standard Model-like Higgs boson (LFVHD), h->\mu\tau, is discussed in seesaw models at the one-loop level. Based on particular analytic expressions of Passarino-Veltman functions, the two unitary and 't Hooft Feynman gauges are used to compute the branching ratio of LFVHD and compare with results reported recently. In the minimal seesaw (MSS) model, the branching ratio was investigated in the whole valid range 10^{-9}-10^{15} GeV of new neutrino mass scale m_{n_6}. Using the Casas-Ibarra parameterization, this branching ratio enhances with large and increasing m_{n_6}. But the maximal value can reach only order of 10^{-11}. Interesting relations of LFVHD predicted by the MSS and inverse seesaw (ISS) model are discussed. The ratio between two LFVHD branching ratios predicted by the ISS and MSS is simply m^2_{n_6}\mu^{-2}_X, where \mu_X is the small neutrino mass scale in the ISS.     Local anaesthetic bupivacaine induced ovarian and prostate cancer apoptotic cell death and underlying mechanisms in vitro

    Retrospective studies indicate that the use of regional anesthesia can reduce cancer recurrence after surgery which could be due to ranging from immune function preservation to direct molecular mechanisms. This study was to investigate the effects of bupivacaine on ovarian and prostate cancer cell biology and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Cell viability, proliferation and migration of ovarian carcinoma (SKOV-3) and prostate carcinoma (PC-3) were examined following treatment with bupivacaine. Cleaved caspase 3, 8 and 9, and GSK-3β, pGSK-3β(tyr216) and pGSK-3β(ser9) expression were assessed by immunofluorescence. FAS ligand neutralization, caspase and GSK-3 inhibitors and GSK-3β siRNA were applied to further explore underlying mechanisms. Clinically relevant concentrations of bupivacaine reduced cell viability and inhibited cellular proliferation and migration in both cell lines. Caspase 8 and 9 inhibition generated partial cell death reversal in SKOV-3, whilst only caspase 9 was effective in PC-3. Bupivacaine increased the phosphorylation of GSK-3β(Tyr216) in SKOV-3 but without measurable effect in PC3. GSK-3β inhibition and siRNA gene knockdown decreased bupivacaine induced cell death in SKOV-3 but not in PC3. Our data suggests that bupivacaine has direct ‘anti-cancer’ properties through the activation of intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways in ovarian cancer but only the intrinsic pathway in prostate cancer

    Farmland Leasing: South Dakota Farmland Leasing 2003

    Nearly 40% of South Dakota agricultural land is operated under a leasing agreement. Presented in this report are recent and longer term trends in land tenure, ownership, and leasing, based on Census of Agriculture data and related materials. Also presented are findings from the 1 996 farmland leasing survey completed by 513 South Dakota farm operators: (1) characteristics of rental market participants and of the farmland leasing market, (2) detailed provisions of cash leases and share leases for cropland, and (3) economic evaluation of farmland leasing arrangements. Information from the 1996 survey provides a comprehensive and statistically valid benchmark of agricultural land leasing in South Dakota, with primary emphasis on cropland leasing arrangements. This is the most comprehensive statewide study of South Dakota farmland rental markets since 1986. In many respects this publication updates and extends findings from the 1986 study reported in B704, Farmland leasing in South Dakota, published by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (Peterson and Janssen, 1988). This report should b e o f particular interest to renters and landlords, loan officers, realtors and appraisers, agricultural researchers, and others interested in farmland rental market developments

    Temperature driven structural phase transition for trapped ions and its experimental detection

    A Wigner crystal formed with trapped ion can undergo structural phase transition, which is determined only by the mechanical conditions on a classical level. Instead of this classical result, we show that through consideration of quantum and thermal fluctuation, a structural phase transition can be solely driven by change of the system's temperature. We determine a finite-temperature phase diagram for trapped ions using the renormalization group method and the path integral formalism, and propose an experimental scheme to observe the predicted temperature-driven structural phase transition, which is well within the reach of the current ion trap technology.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Effects of ultrasound on electrochemical oxidation mechanisms of p-substituted phenols at BDD and PbO2 anodes

    The effects of low-frequency (40 kHz) ultrasound are investigated with regard to the effectiveness and mechanisms of electrochemical oxidation of p-substituted phenols (p-nitrophenol, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, phenol, p-cresol, and p-methoxyphenol) at BDD (boron-doped diamond) and PbO2 anodes. Although ultrasound improved the disappearance rates of p-substituted phenols at both the BDD and PbO2 anodes, the degree of enhancement varied according to the type of p-substituted phenol and type of anode under consideration. At the BDD anode, the % Increase values were in the range 73-83% for p-substituted phenol disappearance and in the range 60-70% for COD removal. However, at the PbO2 anode, the corresponding %Increase values were in the range 50-70% for disappearance of p-substituted phenols and only 5-25% for COD removal, much lower values than obtained at the BDD anode. Further investigations on the influence of ultrasound on the electrochemical oxidation mechanisms at BDD and PbO2 anodes revealed that the different increase extent were due to the specialized electrochemical oxidation mechanisms at these two anodes. The hydroxyl radicals were mainly free at the BDD electrodes with a larger reaction zone, but adsorbed at the PbO2 electrodes with a smaller reaction zone. Therefore, the enhancement due to ultrasound was greater at the BDD anode than at the PbO2 anode. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
