CARISMA: a context-sensitive approach to race-condition sample-instance selection for multithreaded applications
Dynamic race detectors can explore multiple thread schedules of a multithreaded program over the same input to detect data races. Although existing sampling-based precise race detectors reduce overheads effectively so that lightweight precise race detection can be performed in testing or post-deployment environments, they are ineffective in detecting races if the sampling rates are low. This paper presents CARISMA to address this problem. CARISMA exploits the insight that along an execution trace, a program may potentially handle many accesses to the memory locations created at the same site for similar purposes. Iterating over multiple execution trials of the same input, CARISMA estimates and distributes the sampling budgets among such location creation sites, and probabilistically collects a fraction of all accesses to the memory locations associated with such sites for subsequent race detection. Our experiment shows that, compared with PACER on the same platform and at the same sampling rate (such as 1%), CARISMA is significantly more effective. © 2012 ACM.postprin

A dynamic fault localization technique with noise reduction for java programs
Existing fault localization techniques combine various program features and similarity coefficients with the aim of precisely assessing the similarities among the dynamic spectra of these program features to predict the locations of faults. Many such techniques estimate the probability of a particular program feature causing the observed failures. They ignore the noise introduced by the other features on the same set of executions that may lead to the observed failures. In this paper, we propose both the use of chains of key basic blocks as program features and an innovative similarity coefficient that has noise reduction effect. We have implemented our proposal in a technique known as MKBC. We have empirically evaluated MKBC using three real-life medium-sized programs with real faults. Smoking cessation and carotid atherosclerosis: The guangzhou biobank cohort studydCVD
Introduction Smoking has been shown to be associated with carotid atherosclerosis in cross-sectional and prospective studies in Western populations. However, few studies have examined the reversal of risk resulting from quitting smoking, and the results are conflicting. Methods 959 men aged 50e85 years were randomly selected from phase III (2006e2007) of the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study into this cross-sectional study. Common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCAIMT) was measured by B-mode ultrasonography, and carotid artery plaques were identified. Major cardiovascular risk factors, including fasting triglyceride, low-density and high-density lipoprotein (LDL and HDL) cholesterol and glucose, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, were assessed. Results CCA-IMT and the number of carotid plaque increased from never to former to current smokers (both p≤0.001). Among former smokers compared to current smokers, after adjustment for cigarette pack-years and other potential confounders, the adjusted ORs (95% CI) for quitting for 1-9, 10-19 and 20+ years were 0.77 (0.47 to 1.26), 0.45 (0.26 to 0.79) and 0.37 (0.17 to 0.77) for the presence of CCA atherosclerosis, and 0.69 (0.43 to 1.12), 0.47 (0.27 to 0.82) and 0.45 (0.23 to 0.96) for the presence of carotid plaques, respectively. Longer duration of quitting smoking was also significantly associated with decreasing risk of the severity of CCA atherosclerosis and carotid plaques (all p≤0.001). Conclusion Smoking cessation was beneficial in attenuating the risk of carotid atherosclerosis associated with cigarette smoking. The short duration of cessation in earlier studies is a likely explanation for the inconsistent results.published_or_final_versio
The electronic structure of amorphous silica: A numerical study
We present a computational study of the electronic properties of amorphous
SiO2. The ionic configurations used are the ones generated by an earlier
molecular dynamics simulations in which the system was cooled with different
cooling rates from the liquid state to a glass, thus giving access to
glass-like configurations with different degrees of disorder [Phys. Rev. B 54,
15808 (1996)]. The electronic structure is described by a tight-binding
Hamiltonian. We study the influence of the degree of disorder on the density of
states, the localization properties, the optical absorption, the nature of
defects within the mobility gap, and on the fluctuations of the Madelung
potential, where the disorder manifests itself most prominently. The
experimentally observed mismatch between a photoconductivity threshold of 9 eV
and the onset of the optical absorption around 7 eV is interpreted by the
picture of eigenstates localized by potential energy fluctuations in a mobility
gap of approximately 9 eV and a density of states that exhibits valence and
conduction band tails which are, even in the absence of defects, deeply located

Approximate Analytical Equations for the Stirrer Angular Correlation in a Reverberation Chamber
IEEE In a reverberation chamber (RC), the angular correlation coefficient of a stirrer is an important parameter. It has been used to evaluate the performance of a stirrer or to estimate the number of independent samples in a measurement. In the previous work, the angular correlation coefficient (ACC) was evaluated numerically and no analytical equation was proposed. In this study, we propose an approximate analytical equation to fit the measured angular correlation that shows good agreements with measurement results. General properties of ACC are explored with physical insights; the equivalency of the mean value of the angular correlation and the -factor is revealed. The remnant of SN1987A revealed at (sub-)mm wavelengths
Context: Supernova 1987A (SN1987A) exploded in the Large Magellanic Cloud
(LMC). Its proximity and rapid evolution makes it a unique case study of the
early phases in the development of a supernova remnant. One particular aspect
of interest is the possible formation of dust in SN1987A, as SNe could
contribute significantly to the dust seen at high redshifts. Aims: We explore
the properties of SN1987A and its circumburst medium as seen at mm and sub-mm
wavelengths, bridging the gap between extant radio and infrared (IR)
observations of respectively the synchrotron and dust emission. Methods:
SN1987A was observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 3.2
mm in July 2005, and with the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) at 0.87 mm
in May 2007. We present the images and brightness measurements of SN1987A at
these wavelengths for the first time. Results: SN1987A is detected as an
unresolved point source of 11.2 +/- 2.0 mJy at 3.2 mm (5" beam) and 21 +/- 4
mJy at 0.87 mm (18" beam). These flux densities are in perfect agreement with
extrapolations of the powerlaw radio spectrum and modified-blackbody dust
emission, respectively. This places limits on the presence of free-free
emission, which is similar to the expected free-free emission from the ionized
ejecta from SN1987A. Adjacent, fainter emission is observed at 0.87 mm
extending ~0.5' towards the south-west. This could be the impact of the
supernova progenitor's wind when it was still a red supergiant upon a dense
medium. Conclusions: We have established a continuous spectral energy
distribution for the emission from SN1987A and its immediate surroundings,
linking the IR and radio data. This places limits on the contribution from
ionized plasma. Our sub-mm image reveals complexity in the distribution of cold
dust surrounding SN1987A, but leaves room for freshly synthesized dust in the

Bayesian shrinkage mapping of quantitative trait loci in variance component models
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In this article, I propose a model-selection-free method to map multiple quantitative trait loci (QTL) in variance component model, which is useful in outbred populations. The new method can estimate the variance of zero-effect QTL infinitely to zero, but nearly unbiased for non-zero-effect QTL. It is analogous to Xu's Bayesian shrinkage estimation method, but his method is based on allelic substitution model, while the new method is based on the variance component models.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Extensive simulation experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed method. The results showed that the proposed method was efficient in mapping multiple QTL simultaneously, and moreover it was more competitive than the reversible jump MCMC (RJMCMC) method and may even out-perform it.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The newly developed Bayesian shrinkage method is very efficient and powerful for mapping multiple QTL in outbred populations.</p
