Insect (Arthropoda: Insecta) Composition in the Diet of Ornate Box Turtles (Terrapene ornata ornata) in Two Western Illinois Sand Prairies, with a New State Record for Cyclocephala (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)
A study of fecal samples collected over a two-year period from juvenile ornate box turtles (Terrapene ornata ornata Agassiz) revealed diets consisting of six orders of insects representing 19 families. Turtles were reared in captivity from eggs harvested from local, wild populations, and released at two remnant prairies. Identifiable insect fragments were found in 94% of samples in 2013 (n=33) and 96% in 2014 (n=25). Frequency of occurrence of insects in turtle feces is similar to results reported in previous studies of midwestern Terrapene species. A comparison of insect composition presented no significant difference between release sites. There is no significant difference in consumed insect species between turtles released into or outside of a fenced enclosure at the same site. Specimens of Cyclocephala longula LeConte collected during this study represent a new state record for Illinois
A tri-dimensional approach for auditing brand loyalty
Over the past twenty years brand loyalty has been an important topic for both marketing practitioners and academics. While practitioners have produced proprietary brand loyalty audit models, there has been little academic research to make transparent the methodology that underpins these audits and to enable practitioners to understand, develop and conduct their own audits. In this paper, we propose a framework for a brand loyalty audit that uses a tri-dimensional approach to brand loyalty, which includes behavioural loyalty and the two components of attitudinal loyalty: emotional and cognitive loyalty. In allowing for different levels and intensity of brand loyalty, this tri-dimensional approach is important from a managerial perspective. It means that loyalty strategies that arise from a brand audit can be made more effective by targeting the market segments that demonstrate the most appropriate combination of brand loyalty components. We propose a matrix with three dimensions (emotional, cognitive and behavioural loyalty) and two levels (high and low loyalty) to facilitate a brand loyalty audit. Liquid drop splashing on smooth, rough and textured surfaces
Splashing occurs when a liquid drop hits a dry solid surface at high
velocity. This paper reports experimental studies of how the splash depends on
the roughness and the texture of the surfaces as well as the viscosity of the
liquid. For smooth surfaces, there is a "corona" splash caused by the presence
of air surrounding the drop. There are several regimes that occur as the
velocity and liquid viscosity are varied. There is also a "prompt" splash that
depends on the roughness and texture of the surfaces. A measurement of the size
distribution of the ejected droplets is sensitive to the surface roughness. For
a textured surface in which pillars are arranged in a square lattice,
experiment shows that the splashing has a four-fold symmetry. The splash occurs
predominantly along the diagonal directions. In this geometry, two factors
affect splashing the most: the pillar height and spacing between pillars.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure
Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 1995 Term
This Article, the eleventh in a series, attempts through statistical analysis to determine whether individual Justices on the United States Supreme Court (as well as the Court as a whole) voted more conservatively, more liberally, or about the same in the 1995 Terms as compared with past terms. The 1995 figures reveal a Court in ideological tension. Although some statistical measures suggest conservatism on the High Bench, there are notable contrary liberal indicators as well (principally in the areas of state criminal cases, federal jurisdiction, and First Amendment claims). Indeed, regression analysis demonstrates that the 1995 liberal movement in state criminal cases by the Court\u27s three most conservative members (the Chief Justice and Justices Scalia and Thomas) is statistically significant. Perhaps the most important (although least surprising) statistics are those that demonstrate the Court\u27s identifiable division into two wings: a liberal coalition composed of Justices Stevens, Souter, Ginsburg and Breyer, and a conservative bloc composed of the Chief Justice and Justices Scalia and Thomas. Justices Kennedy and O\u27Connor remain between these two factions, casting the deciding votes in the most hotly contested cases. The voting behavior of these moderate swing voters has caused the Court to vacillate markedly between liberal and conservative outcomes during the past four Terms. This ideological dynamic is likely to be altered only by resignations and replacements on the Court
THE EFFECT OF INDIVIDUALISED COACHING INTERVENTIONS ON ELITE YOUNG FAST BOWLERS‘ TECHNIQUE
Fast bowling in cricket is an activity well recognised as having a high injury prevalence. Previous research has associated lower back injury with aspects of fast bowling technique. Coaching interventions that may decrease the likelihood of injury, whilst maintaining or increasing ball speed, remain a priority within the sport. Selected kinematics of the bowling action of 14 elite young fast bowlers were measured using an 18 camera Vicon Motion Analysis System. Subjects were tested before and after a two year coaching intervention period, during which subject-specific coaching interventions were provided. Mann-Whitney tests were used to identify significant differences in the change in the selected kinematics between those bowlers who were coached or un-coached on each specific aspect. Coached athletes demonstrated a significant change in shoulder alignment at back foot contact (more side-on, P = 0.002) and shoulder counter-rotation (decreased, P = 0.001) relative to un-coached athletes. There was no difference in the amount of change in flexion angles of the front or back knee or lower trunk side-flexion between those who received coaching intervention and those that did not. This study shows that specific aspects of fast bowling technique in elite players can change over a two year period and may be attributed to coaching intervention
Network and user interface for PAT DOME virtual motion environment system
The Device for Orientation and Motion Environments Preflight Adaptation Trainer (DOME PAT) provides astronauts a virtual microgravity sensory environment designed to help alleviate tye symptoms of space motion sickness (SMS). The system consists of four microcomputers networked to provide real time control, and an image generator (IG) driving a wide angle video display inside a dome structure. The spherical display demands distortion correction. The system is currently being modified with a new graphical user interface (GUI) and a new Silicon Graphics IG. This paper will concentrate on the new GUI and the networking scheme. The new GUI eliminates proprietary graphics hardware and software, and instead makes use of standard and low cost PC video (CGA) and off the shelf software (Microsoft's Quick C). Mouse selection for user input is supported. The new Silicon Graphics IG requires an Ethernet interface. The microcomputer known as the Real Time Controller (RTC), which has overall control of the system and is written in Ada, was modified to use the free public domain NCSA Telnet software for Ethernet communications with the Silicon Graphics IG. The RTC also maintains the original ARCNET communications through Novell Netware IPX with the rest of the system. The Telnet TCP/IP protocol was first used for real-time communication, but because of buffering problems the Telnet datagram (UDP) protocol needed to be implemented. Since the Telnet modules are written in C, the Adap pragma 'Interface' was used to interface with the network calls

How do ‘under-represented’ business owners engage with public procurement opportunities? Extant studies tend to offer prescriptions rather than theoretically-guided responses to this question despite the importance of public procurement as a tool for economic development. Drawing on Edwards et al’s (2006) institutionalist framework on small firm behaviour, this paper examined the complex, subtle, interplay of structural factors and internal resources in shaping small firms’ strategic choices and identified the existence of four discernible groups of under-represented businesses with differentiated levels of knowledge, attitude and capacity, from those unwilling and unable to seek supply opportunities to those aspiring and able to engage
