    Characteristics of RF-sputtered CoCr films

    Get PDF
The magnetization of the CoCr recording medium has been investigated by several methods. First the perpendicular hysteresis loops are analysed in the thickness range from 500 to 20,000 Ă…. This provided evidence that the magnetization process is typefied by domain wall motion. Second the dependence of the coercivity on the film thickness has been determined. The dependence found can be explained if it is assumed, that the coercivity is caused by domain walls, impeded by the crystallite boundaries. Finally stand-still recording experiments have been performed, which confirm that magnetization takes place by the displacement of domain walls. The switching criterion in the writing process is best met by taking the field averaged over the film thickness

Regarding Women: Philo and Paul as Two Women in a Stoic World

This thesis investigates the views and lives of Philo of Alexandria and the Apostle Paul in regard to women in creation, the fall of humanity, and life. Particularly, it looks at the influence of Stoic thought upon Philo\u27 s and Paul\u27s view of women. We recognize that the common culture and thought of the time greatly shapes human beings and so we acknowledge the influence that Hellenization had upon these men. They utilized the accepted philosophies of their time to develop their theologies and teach their audiences. We address the low philosophical view of women held in Greek philosophy. However, we will also note the times when the men discard or transcend Stoic thought, demonstrating Judaic, Christian, or a practical value for women. We find this in Philo\u27s writings on the Therapeutae. For Paul, this is demonstrated in his respect for and relationships with various women in ministry, as well as his transcendence of Stoic thought in the household codes

    Get PDF
Substantial research has focused on supply management as a key contributor to companies’ competitive advantage with agreement on the characteristics inherent to achieve strategic benefits through more intelligent supply management. This research investigates the characteristics evident in the WA mining industry and the alignment of practices with existing frameworks/models. The WA mining industry is found not to be an anomaly

Assessment outcomes : factors influencing the distribution of marks

    Get PDF
Assessment is an integral and crucial part of university education. Much research has been reported on its different forms, its outcomes, and the means of maximising its reliability and accuracy. Assessment outcomes must meet the needs of several diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders. Students require suitable grades and expect equity and reliability of marks. Employers require evidence of competency. Assessment statistics are a health indicator for courses; they impact community and professional perception of courses and graduates, and are key to teachers’ performance management. Universities use assessment statistics as an input into rankings and they even impact the institution’s "brand". Such a diverse range of objectives of assessment outcomes may therefore generate conflicting forces which can impact the statistical distributions of marks. This paper is an exploratory study to determine the factors influencing the marks distribution patterns of a series of 37 units delivered as part of a logistics course over a period of 18 months. It finds clear factors such as quality of student intake, methods of delivery and differences in teaching and content all influence the patterns, but there are statistical indicators of more subtle influences, generated by the needs of the stakeholders. It also leads to clear directions of further research and a possible model, which focuses on organisational culture, policies and motivations of assessors and the assessment process and their interaction

Filter-foraging strategies of captive American paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) in relation to food type, density and distribution in the water column

The American paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) uses ram filter-feeding to forage for (mainly) zooplankton throughout the water column. It makes an ontogenetic transition from buccal pumping to ram ventilation feeding in the first year. In wild conditions, plankton is often distributed unevenly in time and space; however, this does not always apply to captive conditions. In the present study, two paddlefish were fed on a range of diets and supply methods to investigate the effect on foraging strategy. Insight into influencing foraging strategies could be beneficial for zoos and aquaria for display purposes or for improving welfare conditions. The paddlefish were studied during foraging, and foraging strategy, bout length and usage of the aquarium space were recorded. Three foraging strategies can be distinguished: foraging while swimming in straight lines, foraging while swimming in circulatory paths and particulate foraging. Although these strategies appear to not have a fixed switch-point, a significant difference was found between the foraging strategies for start and end points of certain strategies in relation to food density (P</p
