INTEGRAL high energy detection of the transient IGR J11321-5311

Context: The transient hard X-ray source IGR J11321-5311 was discovered by INTEGRAL on June 2005, during observations of the Crux spiral arm. To date, this is the only detection of the source to be reported by any X/gamma-ray mission. Aims: To characterize the behaviour and hence the nature of the source through temporal and spectral IBIS analysis. Methods: Detailed spectral and temporal analysis has been performed using standard INTEGRAL software OSA v.5.1. Results: To date, IGR J11321-5311 has been detected only once. It was active for about 3.5 hours, a short and bright flare lasting about 1.5 hours is evident in the IBIS light curve. It reached a peak flux of about 80 mCrab or 2.2x10E-9 erg cmE-2 sE-1 (20--300 keV),corresponding to a peak luminosity of 1.1x10E37 erg sE-1 (assuming a distance of 6.5 kpc). During the outburst, the source was detected with a significance of 18 sigma (20--300 keV) and 8 sigma (100--300 keV). The spectrum of the total outburst activity (17--300 keV) is best fitted by the sum of a power law (Gamma=0.55+/-0.18) plus a black body (kT=1.0{+0.2}_{-0.3} keV), with no evidence for a break up to 300 keV. A spectral analysis at Science Window level revealed an evident hardening of the spectrum through the outburst. The IBIS data were searched for pulsations with no positive result. Conclusions: The X-ray spectral shape and the flaring behaviour favour the hypothesis that IGR J11321-5311 is an Anomalous X-ray Pulsar, though a different nature can not be firmly rejected at the present stage.Comment: accepted for publication in A&A letter, 4 pages, 6 figure

A new product, marinated, breaded catfish nuggets, was developed. This conjoint study was designed to evaluate consumers’ preferences for certain attributes of the nuggets. An in-store survey was conducted to collect data. The data collected will be used to determine the market potential for the catfish nuggets.Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

The Social Licence for Research:Why care.data Ran Into Trouble

    Get PDF
In this article we draw on the concept of a social licence to explain public concern at the introduction of care.data, a recent English initiative designed to extract data from primary care medical records for commissioning and other purposes, including research. The concept of a social licence describes how the expectations of society regarding some activities may go beyond compliance with the requirements of formal regulation; those who do not fulfil the conditions for the social licence (even if formally compliant) may experience ongoing challenge and contestation. Previous work suggests that people's cooperation with specific research studies depends on their perceptions that their participation is voluntary and is governed by values of reciprocity, non-exploitation and service of the public good. When these conditions are not seen to obtain, threats to the social licence for research may emerge. We propose that care.data failed to adequately secure a social licence because of: (i) defects in the warrants of trust provided for care.data, (ii) the implied rupture in the traditional role, expectations and duties of general practitioners, and (iii) uncertainty about the status of care.data as a public good. The concept of a social licence may be useful in explaining the specifics of care.data, and also in reinforcing the more general lesson for policy-makers that legal authority does not necessarily command social legitimacy

A Compact Full-disk Solar Magnetograph based on miniaturization of GONG instrument

Designing compact instruments is the key for the scientific exploration by smaller spacecrafts such as cubesats or by deep space missions. Such missions require compact instrument designs to have minimal instrument mass. Here we present a proof of concept for miniaturization of the Global Oscillation Network Group GONG instrument. GONG instrument routinely obtains solar full disk Doppler and magnetic field maps of the solar photosphere using Ni 676 nm absorption line. A key concept for miniaturization of GONG optical design is to replace the bulky Lyot filter with a narrow-band interference filter and reduce the length of feed telescope. We present validation of the concept via numerical modeling as well as by proof of concept observations.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

Compressible magma flow in a two-dimensional elastic-walled dike

    Get PDF
The ascent of magma to the Earth's surface is commonly modeled by assuming a fixed dike or flow geometry from a deep subsurface reservoir to the surface. In practice, however, this flow geometry is produced by deformation of the crust by ascending overpressured magma. Here, we explore how this elastic deformation is coupled to magma ascent using a model of a planar dike whose width is allowed to evolve with depth in the crust. The model predicts that, for points well below the surface, the dike gradually narrows with height above the source reservoir as the overpressure of the magma relative to the minimum horizontal stress in the crust decreases. For a bubbly compressible magma, the flow accelerates to the surface and reaches the speed of sound at the vent, as for rigid conduit flow. However, it is now able to decompress to atmospheric pressure at the vent by contraction of the conduit. Our calculations predict eruption rates on the order of 0.1–10 m2/sm^2/s per unit length of a dike, for magma supplied from a reservoir with overpressure in the range − 10 MPa to + 20 MPa

Supervision for school psychologists in training: Developing a framework from empirical findings

    Get PDF
Similar to other professional disciplines, the importance of supervision within school psychology has attracted considerable attention within recent years. Despite this, systematic review of current literature reveals a dearth of empirical literature proposing underlying theoretical structures. This study extends recent qualitative research by surveying 310 school psychology students undertaking a preparatory doctoral training programme within the 12 approved universities in England and Wales. Data were obtained from a 21-item closed questionnaire developed from previous empirical findings and subjected to Exploratory Factor Analysis. Findings reveal three key supervisory components: Safe space for authentic learning, instructional support, and reference points for professional learning. Comparisons with other theoretical models are made and implications for practice explored. A framework for professional practice, based on key findings and other important theoretical developments, is proposed
