Strain Effects on Point Defects and Chain-Oxygen Order-Disorder Transition in 123-Structure Cuprate Superconductors
The energetics of Schottky defects in 123 cuprate superconductor series, (where RE = lanthandies) and (AE =
alkali-earths), were found to have unusual relations if one considers only the
volumetric strain. Our calculations reveal the effect of non-uniform changes of
interatomic distances within the RE-123 structures, introduced by doping
homovalent elements, on the Schottky defect formation energy. The energy of
formation of Frenkel Pair defects, which is an elementary disordering event, in
123 compounds can be substantially altered under both stress and chemical
doping. Scaling the oxygen-oxygen short-range repulsive parameter using the
calculated formation energy of Frenkel pair defects, the transition temperature
between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases is computed by quasi-chemical
approximations (QCA). The theoretical results illustrate the same trend as the
experimental measurements in that the larger the ionic radius of RE, the lower
the orthorhombic/tetragonal phase transition temperature. This study provides
strong evidence of the strain effects on order-disorder transition due to
oxygens in the CuO chain sites.Comment: In print Phys Rev B (2004
Processing Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductors from amorphous state
The bismuth based high T sub c superconductors can be processed via an amorphous Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu oxide. The amorphous oxides were prepared by melting the constituent powders in an alumina crucible at 1200 C in air followed by pouring the liquid onto an aluminum plate, and rapidly pressing with a second plate. In the amorphous state, no crystalline phase was identified in the powder x ray diffraction pattern of the quenched materials. After heat treatment at high temperature the amorphous materials crystallized into a glass ceramic containing a large fraction of the Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) phase T sub c = 110 K. The processing method, crystallization, and results of dc electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements are discussed
Role of axin in nerve growth factor-stimulated neurite outgrowth
The role of integrin-linked kinase (ILK), a kinase that is involved in various cellular processes, including adhesion and migration, has not been studied in primary neurons. Using mRNA dot blot and Western blot analysis of ILK in rat and human brain tissue, we found that ILK is expressed in various regions of the CNS. Immunohistochemical and immunocytochemical techniques revealed granular ILK staining that is enriched in neurons and colocalizes with the 1 integrin subunit. The role of ILK in neurite growth promotion by NGF was studied in rat pheochromocytoma cells and dorsal root ganglion neurons using a pharmacological inhibitor of ILK (KP-392) or after overexpres-sion of dominant-negative ILK (ILK-DN). Both molecular and pharmacological inhibition of ILK activity significantly reduced NGF-induced neurite outgrowth. Survival assays indicate that KP-392-induced suppression of neurite outgrowth occurred in the absence of cell death. ILK kinase activity was stimulated by NGF. NGF-mediated stimulation of phosphorylation of both AKT and the Taukinase glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) was inhibited in the presence of KP-392 and after overexpression of ILK-DN. Consequently, ILKinhibition resulted in an increase in the hyperphosphorylation of Tau , a substrate of GSK-3. Together these findings indicate that ILK is an important effector in NGF-mediated neurite outgrowth. Over-expansion capacity and stent design model: an update with contemporary DES platforms
© 2016 The AuthorsBackground Previously, we examined the difference in stent designs across different sizes for six widely used Drug Eluting Stents (DESs). Although stent post-dilatation to larger diameter is commonly done, typically in the setting of long tapering segment or left-main PCI, there is an increasing recognition that information with regard to the different stent model designs has a critical impact on overexpansion results. This study aims to provide an update on stent model designs for contemporary DES platforms as well as test overexpansion results under with oversized post-dilatation. Methods and results We studied 6 different contemporary commercially available DES platforms: Synergy, Xience Xpedition, Ultimaster, Orsiro, Resolute Onyx and Biomatrix Alpha. We investigated for each platform the difference in stent designs across different sizes and results obtained after post-expansion with larger balloon sizes. The stents were deployed at nominal diameter and subsequently over expanded using increasingly large post dilatation balloon sizes (4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 mm at 14ATM). Light microscopy was used to measure the changes in stent geometry and lumen diameter after over-expansion. For each respective DES platform, the MLD observed after overexpansion of the largest stent size available with a 6.0 mm balloon was 5.7 mm for Synergy, 5.6 mm for Xience, 5.2 mm for Orsiro, 5.8 mm for Ultimaster, 5.5 mm for 4 mm Onyx (5.9 mm for the 5 mm XL size) and 5.8 mm for BioMatrix Chroma. Conclusion This update presents valuable novel insights that may be helpful for careful selection of stent size for contemporary DES based on model designs. Such information is especially critical in left main bifurcation stenosis treatment where overexpansion to larger oversized diameter may be required to ensure full stent apposition
Plasma inflammatory cytokines and survival of pancreatic cancer patients.
OBJECTIVES: Inflammation and inflammatory conditions have been associated with pancreatic cancer risk and progression in a number of clinical, epidemiological, and animal model studies. The goal of the present study is to identify plasma markers of inflammation associated with survival of pancreatic cancer patients, and assess their joint contribution to patient outcome.
METHODS: We measured circulating levels of four established markers of inflammation (C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor type II (sTNF-RII), and macrophage inhibitory cytokine-1 (MIC-1)) in 446 patients enrolled in an ongoing prospective clinic-based study. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for death were estimated using multivariate Cox proportional hazards models.
RESULTS: Overall mortality was significantly increased in patients in the top quartile of CRP (HR = 2.52, 95% CI: 1.82-3.49), IL-6 (HR = 2.78, 95% CI: 2.03-3.81), sTNF-RII (HR = 2.00, 95% CI: 1.46-2.72), and MIC-1 (HR = 2.53, 95% CI: 1.83-3.50), compared to those in the bottom quartile (P-trend
CONCLUSION: Individual elevated plasma inflammatory cytokines are associated with significant and dramatic reductions in pancreatic cancer patient survival. Furthermore, we observed an independent combined effect of those cytokines on patient survival, suggesting that multiple inflammatory pathways are likely involved in PDAC progression. Future research efforts to target the inflammatory state using combination strategies in pancreatic cancer patients are warranted
Reversible melting and equilibrium phase formation of (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d
The decomposition and the reformation of the (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d
(?Bi,Pb(2223)?) phase have been investigated in-situ by means of
High-Temperature Neutron Diffraction, both in sintered bulk samples and in
Ag-sheathed monofilamentary tapes. Several decomposition experiments were
performed at various temperatures and under various annealing atmospheres,
under flowing gas as well as in sealed tubes, in order to study the appropriate
conditions for Bi,Pb(2223) formation from the melt. The Bi,Pb(2223) phase was
found to melt incongruently into (Ca,Sr)2CuO3, (Sr,Ca)14Cu24O41 and a
Pb,Bi-rich liquid phase. Phase reformation after melting was successfully
obtained both in bulk samples and Ag-sheathed tapes. The possibility of
crystallising the Bi,Pb(2223) phase from the melt was found to be extremely
sensitive to the temperature and strongly dependent on the Pb losses. The study
of the mass losses due to Pb evaporation was complemented by thermogravimetric
analysis which proved that Pb losses are responsible for moving away from
equilibrium and therefore hinder the reformation of the Bi,Pb(2223) phase from
the melt. Thanks to the full pattern profile refinement, a quantitative phase
analysis was carried out as a function of time and temperature and the role of
the secondary phases was investigated. Lattice distortions and/or transitions
were found to occur at high temperature in Bi,Pb(2223), Bi,Pb(2212),
(Ca,Sr)2CuO3 and (Sr,Ca)14Cu24O41, due to cation diffusion and stoichiometry
changes. The results indicate that it is possible to form the Bi,Pb(2223) phase
from a liquid close to equilibrium conditions, like Bi(2212) and Bi(2201), and
open new unexplored perspectives for high-quality Ag-sheathed Bi,Pb(2223) tape
processing.Comment: 45 pages (including references,figures and captions), 13 figures
