Social networks and web services-based systems
Web services are paving the way for a new type of business applications. This can be noticed from the large number of standards and initiatives related to Web services (Margaria, 2007; Papazoglou et al., 2007; Yu et al., 2008), which tackle a variety of issues such as security, fault tolerance, and substitution. These issues hinder the automatic composition of Web services. Composition handles the situation of a user\u27s request that cannot be satisfied by any single, available Web service, whereas a composite Web service obtained by combining available Web services may be used. Despite the tremendous capabilities that empower Web services, they still lack some capabilities that would propel them to a higher level of adoption by the IT community and make them compete with other integration middleware like CORBA and .Net. As a result, Web services adoption could be slowed down if some issues such as the complexity of their discovery are not properly addressed (Langdom, 2003). For this particular issue of discovery, we examine in this chapter the use of social networks (Ethier, visited in 2008; Wasserman and Glaskiewics, 1994). Such networks permit to establish between people relationships of different types like friendship, kinship, and conflict. These relationships are dynamic and, hence, adjusted over time depending on different factors like outcomes of previous interaction experiences, and natures of partners dealt with. Replacing people with Web services is doable since Web services constantly engage in different types of interaction sessions with users and peers as wel
On the Use of Social Networks in Web Services: Application to the Discovery Stage
This chapter discusses the use of social networks in Web services with focus on the discovery stage that characterizes the life cycle of these Web services. Other stages in this life cycle include description, publication, invocation, and composition. Web services are software applications that end users or other peers can invoke and compose to satisfy different needs such as hotel booking and car rental. Discovering the relevant Web services is, and continues to be, a major challenge due to the dynamic nature of these Web services. Indeed, Web services appear/disappear or suspend/resume operations without prior notice. Traditional discovery techniques are based on registries such as Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) and Electronic Business using eXtensible Markup Language (ebXML). Unfortunately, despite the different improvements that these techniques have been subject to, they still suffer from various limitations that could slow down the acceptance trend of Web services by the IT community. Social networks seem to offer solutions to some of these limitations but raise, at the same time, some issues that are discussed in this chapter. The contributions of this chapter are three: social network definition in the particular context of Web services; mechanisms that support Web services build, use, and maintain their respective social networks; and social networks adoption to discover Web services
Brainwave reading as a tool to choose best teaching practices: a quasi-experimental study with higher education students

For this purpose, a quasi-experiment was conducted with 57 college students from a private university in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre between 2018 and 2019. A brainwave equipment called Mindwave NeuroSky was used to record attention and concentration levels in different types of classes: lectures, video lessons and gamified classes. After statistical tests of comparison between the studied groups, the main results indicated greater effectiveness for video lessons and gamified classes, with lectures finishing last
Analysis of the contextual behavior of the user and its relation with the consumption of mobile applications
The mobile applications market is growing rapidly, capturing the attention on the analysis of the consumption of applications to improve their recommendation and the satisfaction of the user. The analysis is based on the search for information that allow explaining the occurrence of events of the life cycle of the applications. In this sense, several studies show a strong relation between such events and information about the current contextual situation of the users and their application consumption record. Nevertheless, the mentioned studies do not take into account the relation existing between the contextual dimensions status record (knownas CUBe), and the occurrence of application life cycle events, but it was taken into account for this research work. Therefore, a statistical analysis about an actual dataset is presented, evidencing a strong relation between the CUBe and the launch of a set of applications. Finally, a scenario where these relations can be used for enriching recommendation systems for mobile applications is described.
