To prey or not to prey? Welfare and individual losses in a conflict model

We analyse a generalised form of the Hirshleifer-Skaperdas predation model. In such a model agents have a choice between productive work and appropriation. We suggest that such a model can usefully be thought of as a continuous form of the Prisoners' Dilemma. We present closed form solutions for the interior equilibria and comparative statics for all Cournot equilibria and analyse the social welfare losses arising from predation. We show that predation is minimised under two quite different regimes, one in which claiming is very ineffective and another in which one of the players becomes marginalised. The worst outcomes seem to arise when claiming is effective, but inequality in power is significant but not extreme. This, arguably, is the situation in a number of transition societies

Halcrow Yolles was retained to conceptualize ideas for a glass bridge designed tospan across the main lobby of a new hotel. Its defining feature, laminated glassbalustrades, span continuously over the entire nine metre opening. Design work forthe bridge was completed using a finite element model of the entire bridge allowingfor a detailed analysis of stress concentrations in the glass at bearing boltconnections. Special attention was paid to the transportation and erection of thebridge to ensure that the large panels remained intact. This project demonstrateshow state of the art glass production techniques in combination with leading edgedesign methodology can lead to architecturally interesting structures

The Informational Role of the Media in Private Lending

ABSTRACT We investigate whether a borrower's media coverage influences the syndicated loan origination and participation decisions of informationally disadvantaged lenders, loan syndicate structures, and interest spreads. In syndicated loan deals, information asymmetries can exist between lenders that have a relationship with a borrower and less informed, nonrelationship lenders competing to serve as lead arranger on a syndicated loan, and also between lead arrangers and less informed syndicate participants. Theory suggests that the aggressiveness with which less informed lenders compete for a loan deal increases in the sentiment of public information signals about a borrower. We extend this theory to syndicated loans and hypothesize that the likelihood of less informed lenders serving as the lead arranger or joining a loan syndicate is increasing in the sentiment of media‐initiated, borrower‐specific articles published prior to loan origination. We find that as media sentiment increases (1) outside, nonrelationship lenders have a higher probability of originating loans; (2) syndicate participants are less likely to have a previous relationship with the borrower or lead bank; (3) lead banks retain a lower percentage of loans; and (4) loan spreads decrease

Narratives of hospice volunteers: Perspectives on death and dying.

    Get PDF
This study found that hospice volunteers' narratives function to make sense of death, warrant decisions for advanced preparation of their own death, illustrated an attempt to control their own death, transformed their identity into hospice representatives, and build community by establishing standard narrative formats. Moreover, ethnographic analysis revealed that additional psychosocial information provided by case managers during IDT meetings creates dialectical tensions for the care team. Future research is needed to understand communication apprehension with dying persons and to learn more about psychosocial information sharing in IDT meetings.Advances in medical technology have prolonged life and consequently death. As a result, Americans are taking longer to die, thus necessitating the need to talk to dying persons as well as the need to talk about death. A narrative functional analysis was used to determine how hospice volunteers negotiate communication with dying persons and to further understand how their experiences with the dying impacts their lives. Additionally, a dialectical theoretical approach was used to investigate psychosocial information sharing by case managers during hospice interdisciplinary team (IDT) meetings
